Calculated butt coupling efficiency between a GaAlAs double heterostructure laser and a single-mode LiNbO3Ti-diffused optical waveguide is presented in this paper as a function of the transverse displacement, the angular alignment, the longitudinal separation between the laser and the waveguide end surfaces, the radiation field of the laser diode and its dependence on the laser diode structure, and the mode profile of the waveguide and its dependence on experimental diffusion parameters. The maximum efficiency is less than 40 percent because of the mismatch between the waveguide mode and the laser radiation, caused primarily by the experimental limitations in their structures. The effect of the reflection of the waveguide end surface on the laser oscillation has also been estimated.  相似文献

Clonal T cells have been demonstrated in skin lesions of all stages of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs). However, there are conflicting data regarding the CTCL stage at which dissemination of clonal cells into peripheral blood occurs. Although the multifocal occurrence of cutaneous CTCL lesions and T-cell recirculation suggest an early appearance of neoplastic cells in the blood, circulating clonal T cells have only been detected in advanced stages. We investigated their occurrence by a highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay amplifying T-cell receptor gamma rearrangements and subsequent heteroduplex temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (HD-TGGE) of the amplification products. Circulating clonal T cells were found in 26 of 45 patients with mycosis fungoides (MF), six of seven with Sezary's syndrome (SS), 10 of 13 pleomorphic CTCLs, and three of four unclassified CTCLs. Corresponding skin specimens carried clonal T cells in 29 of 40 MF, three of four SS, 12 of 12 pleomorphic, and two of two unclassified CTCL patients. Except for the blood specimen of a psoriatic patient, all samples of 60 controls (psoriasis vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, and healthy volunteers) revealed polyclonal amplification products. In 30 of 32 CTCL patients carrying a clonal rearrangement in blood and skin, identity of both clones was indicated by HD-TGGE and confirmed by sequencing six of these cases. We found an unexpected high frequency of identical clonal T cells in peripheral blood and skin of CTCL patients, including early stages of MF. This supports the concept of an early systemic disease in CTCL and raises new questions concerning the pathogenesis.  相似文献

Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSG) with endothelial tubuloreticular inclusions (TRIs) is the typical lesion of human HIV-associated glomerulopathy. Autopsy studies showed the presence of FSG in 3 of 15 macaques dying 15-120 weeks after experimental infection with a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVMne). Ultrastructural studies generally revealed numerous endothelial TRIs (also present in normals), mesangial expansion, and evidence of mesangial cell injury. One additional animal had a small-vessel polyarteritis with a proliferative and focally crescentic glomerulonephritis; seven animals had mild, multifocal interstitial nephritis. All animals had documented viremia after infection; 14 of 15 developed antibodies to SIV postinoculation. Additional postmortem findings included severe enterocolitis, encephalitis, and opportunistic infections. In contrast, autopsy studies of macaques infected with a type D simian retrovirus (SAIDS-D/Washington, SRV-2) for similar periods of time (n = 40) showed no evidence of FSG. One SRV-infected animal had a mild proliferative glomerulonephritis. These studies indicate SIV-infected primates may provide a relevant model for study of human HIV-associated nephropathy. They also indicate the variable pathology that can be seen in primate infections of distinct retrovirus types, each of which produces a simian immunodeficiency state that resembles human AIDS.  相似文献

This article reviews the age-associated alterations in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics along with the most frequently prescribed medications for the elderly. Changes in motor function were assessed in male rats after injecting graded doses (100, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg, IP) of ammonium chloride and ammonium acetate. The effects were correlated with the concentrations of ammonia and glucose in the brain and blood. Spontaneous motor activity and motor coordination were inhibited after injecting 100 and 200 mg/kg, whereas with 400 and 800 mg/kg the animals exhibited convulsive movements. A dose-dependent increase was found in the concentrations of ammonia and glucose in both blood and brain. These were restored, 25 min after treatment, to control levels in the blood and not in the brain. A correlation was found between the time courses of inhibitory motor events and a rise in brain ammonia levels. Convulsant action of ammonium salts was accompanied by a marked elevation of ammonia and glucose concentration in the brain. The findings suggest that detoxication of diffused ammonia is a rate-limiting process in the brain and that ammonia, at toxic concentrations, decreases glucose utilization in the brain, resulting in an inhibition of motor function. A very high concentration of ammonia in the brain, although inhibiting glucose utilization, produces clonic convulsions probably by activating directly the motor neurons.  相似文献

Anecdotal reports suggest cattle with fescue toxicosis may not respond to vaccination and thus, experience increased incidence of Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (BRDC) when shipped to feedlots. Fescue toxicosis causes hypoprolactemia in cattle. Hypoprolactemia decreases humoral immune responses in mice. Therefore, a study was conducted to compare the magnitude of primary and secondary humoral immune responses against specific antigens in cattle grazing endophyte-infected or endophyte-free fescue. Angus steers were blocked by weight and allocated into four groups. Two groups grazed endophyte-infected (EI) fescue and the other two groups grazed endophyte-free (EF) fescue. All steers were injected IM on d 0 and 21 with lysozyme without adjuvant and concanavalin. A (Con A) with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) in incomplete adjuvant of Freund. Steers were bled on days 0, 21 and 35 post-vaccination. Average daily gains (ADG), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, cholesterol concentrations, rectal temperatures, and serum prolactin concentrations were measured to confirm fescue toxicosis in steers grazing EI fescue. Antibodies to Con A and SRBC were determined by ELISA and hemagglutination assay, respectively. The ADG were decreased for the EI group during the first month. Rectal temperature were elevated and serum prolactin concentrations were decreased in the EI group. Cholesterol and ALP concentrations also were decreased in the EI group. Primary and secondary immune responses against Con A tended to be increased and were increased against SRBC in the EI group. Antibodies against lysozyme were not induced in either group. In conclusion, cattle grazing EI fescue mounted similar humoral immune responses to vaccination, despite hypoprolactemia, as cattle grazing EF fescue. Increases in bovine respiratory disease in cattle maintained on EI fescue probably is not associated with lack of humoral immune response to vaccination protocols as a result of fescue toxicosis.  相似文献

The key elements in all known cuprate superconductors are lightly doped CuOi-planes. Recently a new homologous series of compounds Srn–1Cun+1O2n have been reported in which the planes contain a parallel array of line defects which form a trellis lattice with ladder-segments of the square lattice weakly coupled through triangular line defects. The width of the ladder segments is determined by the parameter n and varies from single chains to arbitrarily wide ladders. The magnetic properties of undoped compounds will be dominated by the properties of the ladders. Heisenberg s = 1/2 ladders can have a spin liquid groundstate with a spin gap if the number of rungs is odd so that a short range RVB groundstate is predicted for such trellis lattices. Using a t-J model to describe the doped material leads to the prediction of a d-wave RVB superconducting groundstate with a large spin gap.  相似文献

The association of antiphospholipid antibodies with unexplained thrombo-occlusive vascular disease is well known but often remains unrecognized. The most well-studied clinical manifestation is venous thrombosis, but arterial occlusive disease involving multiple sites is also well documented. Twenty-six cases of thrombo-occlusive disease were observed in 22 patients over a 3-year period. Magnetic resonance imaging and angiography were used to make the diagnoses. None of the patients who underwent angiography or venography developed thrombolytic disease related to the puncture site. This group of patients with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome had a wide distribution of arterial and venous thrombotic disease. Radiologists should consider antiphospholipid antibody syndrome in the differential diagnosis when evaluating thrombo-occlusive vascular disease that is unexpected or occurs without risk factors. Knowledge of antiphospholipid antibody status has important implications for prognosis and therapy.  相似文献
