The phospholipid and phospholipid fatty acid composition of gill mitochondrial membranes from two temperate zone marine bivalve mollusks, the quahog, Mercenaria mercenaria, and the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, were examined after acclimation to 12 and −1°C. Cardiolipin (CL) was the only phospholipid with proportions altered upon acclimation to −1°C, increasing 188% in the mitochondrial membranes of M. mercenaria. Although the ratio of bilayer stabilizing to destabilizing lipids is frequently associated with cold acclimation in ectothermic species, no change was found in this ratio in either of the species. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were found only to increase in C. virginica with cold acclimation, with total n-3 PUFA increasing in the phospholipid phosphatidylethanolamine, total n-6 PUFA increasing in CL, and total PUFA increasing in phosphatidylinositol. Monounsaturated fatty acids, not PUFA, were found to have increased in M. mercenaria, with 18:1n−9 increasing by 150% in CL, and 20∶1 increasing in both CL and phosphatidylcholine, by 146 and 192%, respectively. These manipulations of membrane phospholipid and fatty acid composition may represent an attempt by these species to help maintain membrane function at low temperatures.  相似文献

The function of organic solar cells is based upon charge photogeneration at donor/acceptor heterojunctions. In this paper, the origin of the improvement in short circuit current of poly(3‐hexylthiophene)/6,6‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PCBM) solar cells with thermal annealing is examined. Transient absorption spectroscopy is employed to demonstrate that thermal annealing results in an approximate two‐fold increase in the yield of dissociated charges. The enhanced charge generation is correlated with a decrease in P3HT's ionization potential upon thermal annealing. These observations are in excellent quantitative agreement with a model in which efficient dissociation of the bound radical pair into free charges is dependent upon the bound radical state being thermally hot when initially generated, enabling it to overcome its coulombic binding energy. These observations provide strong evidence that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level offset of annealed P3HT/PCBM blends may be only just sufficient to drive efficient charge generation in polythiophene‐based solar cells. This has important implications for current strategies to optimize organic photovoltaic device performance based upon the development of smaller optical bandgap polymers.  相似文献

The total scattered electric field of a periodic dielectric optical waveguide is derived in terms of the Green's functions of the unperturbed structure. A condition for self-excitation that takes into account the coupling between radiation and guided modes is obtained in a very general manner and, therefore, is valid for arbitrary periods of the grating structure. Results show that the effect of the coupling between the oscillating guided field and radiation modes is to change the dependence of the threshold gain on the amplitude of the periodic perturbation: increasing the depth of the grating beyond an optimum value causes an increase in threshold due to larger coupling to radiation modes.  相似文献

The concept of ‘terroir’ has roots steeped in French history of wine and evocative stories of the land. Today terroir is important as a quality marker in brand management for upmarket wines. French wines have benefited from their historical connotation with terroir but other wine growing countries have also adopted the term to mean characteristics in wine attributable to place of origin. However there is no universally accepted definition of terroir except to say it refers to a particular place. This paper addresses this ambiguity by seeking the practice-based views of three experienced non-French winemakers. This reveals a social dimension to terroir that in various degrees supports and extends both the technical/scientific progress and brand value for premium wines in both Old and New World regions. This article contributes to the growing body of research that seeks to understand the practicality of terroir as a marketing and brand value indicator.  相似文献

1. Cross-correlation analysis has been used to quantify the responses of cat soleus tendon organs to repetitive twitch contractions of: (a) different motor units within the muscle, (b) single motor units at different muscle lengths, and (c) single motor units when the pulse-train pattern of stimulation delivered to the motor unit axon was altered. 2. Ib afferents were observed which responded to each of several hundred successive motor unit twitches with identical numbers of spikes and with relatively invariant latencies. 3. The present results show that tendon organs are sensitive to subtle alterations in motor unit twitch wave form and amplitude, and that this sensitivity is reflected in the precise timings of their afferent discharge. 4. Examination of these tendon organ responses indicates that the forces produced by single motor units couples to the receptor capsule are well above threshold. Calculations based on these results, and earlier soleus motor unit and muscle fibre data, suggest that the absolute force threshold for tendon organs may be as little as 4 mg, which is less than the estimated minimum twitch force generated by individual soleus muscle fibres. 5. Considering the number of tendon organs in a muscle, and the likelihood that every motor unit is connected with at least one receptor, the sensitivity of tendon organs ensures that every twitch of every motor unit will be reflected in the population of afferent signals projecting to the spinal cord.  相似文献

A new method for evaluation of the capacity of mononuclear phagocytes to inhibit intracellular microorganisms is described. The system provides a means for assessing this effect of macrophages without concern for multiplication of extracellular organisms, effect of antibiotics, and the potential observer bias which may result from visual evaluation. It involves measurement of amount of [6-3H]UdR incorporated by Toxoplasma gondii. Differences between uptake of [6-3H]UdR by infected and uninfected macrophages can be augmented by cytosine arabinoside as this agent inhibits macrophage DNA synthesis but does not substantially alter DNA synthesis by the test organism, T. gondii.  相似文献

The effect of thymidine (TdR) on the growth of a human melanoma transplanted in nude mice has been studied. It was found that the injection of 1 g/kg/h of TdR for at least 72 h is sufficient to suppress the growth of the melanoma cells. This inhibition lasts for the duration of the treatment, and causes no apparent toxicity to the host. Nude mice treated for 6--9 days with TdR survived 158 days after melanoma transplant versus 126 days for the controls.  相似文献

These experiments were performed to determine the importance of cephalic-vagal stimulation in the acid secretory response to eating in normal human subjects. Cephalic stimulation was induced by a modified sham feeding (MSF) technique, during which subjects chewed and expectorated appetizing food. The response to MSF was compared with that to gastric distention with 600 ml NaCl, glucose, or food. In addition, we measured the extent to which cephalic stimulation augments acid secretion that has been stimulated simultaneously by these other mechanisms. Our conclusions are as follows: (a) cephalic stimulation accounts for approximately one-third of the acid secreted when all mechanisms act simultaneously (food-distention plus MSF); (b) within the limits imposed by the maximal secretory capacity, the response to MSF is approximately the same, regardless of whether acid secretion is otherwise unstimulated or is stimulated simultaneously by gastric distention with NaCl, glucose, or food; and (c) gastric distention prolongs the response to cephalic stimulation.  相似文献
