Transient temperature responses of hydronic radiant floor heating system by different pipe embedding depth and water supply condition

"Ondol" is a Korean unique heating system. It is a specific radiant floor heating system using combustion heat of briquette or timber in Korea. Such traditional "Ondol" is changed to radiant heating system with pipe-coil embedded in the floor or slab. This study has contributed to the understandings of the transient behaviours of Ondol-heated floor panels and enclosure exposed to this type of heating system. The result is that the water supply temperature had a large effect on the rate of increase in floor surface and room air temperature. But, in spite of a higher water supply temperature, the heat flow rate was not increased considerably. The shallow pipe embedding depths, of course, result in a low heat flow rate.     

Adaptation of thermafil components to canal walls

In summer 1991 an outbreak of a Salmonella enteritidis epidemic involving about 600 cases of gastroenteritis occurred at one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in southwestern Germany. The main source was a cold fruit soup, in addition Salmonella were isolated from meat strips and a curd cheese which were used for a salad dressing. A total of 2300 contaminated food portions were served resulting in an attack rate of about 25%. The possible origin could have been an asymptomatic Salmonella-positive member of the kitchen personnel who was the only one who was involved with the preparation of all the incriminated foods. A further spread of the epidemic and especially the possible contamination of pharmaceuticals was avoided by the timely and adequate reaction of the company's occupational medical service. This case exemplifies how classical crisis management, "increased initiative on one's own for prevention of infections in all areas of food processing" (Steuer) and finally the cooperation of the company with different institutions of the public health authorities contribute to the control of such a catastrophic scenario.     

S-phase fractions of breast carcinomas. Relationships to morphology, estrogen and progesterone receptors, and early recurrence

Analysis of the S-phase fractions (SPF) measured by in vitro thymidine labeling, morphological appearances, and estrogen receptor (ER) assays of primary invasive breast carcinomas demonstrated several interrelationships. Lobular, mucinous, tubular, and adenocystic carcinomas consistently had low SPF and were usually positive for ER. The same was true for the carcinomas of no special histologic type [the not otherwise specified (NOS) group of E. R. Fisher including "infiltrating ductal" and undifferentiated carcinomas] with minimal anaplasia. Medullary, atypical medullary, and morphologically unclassifiable carcinomas with marked nuclear anaplasia nearly always had high SPF and were usually negative for ER. High SPF was associated with advanced stages of carcinoma initially or with early recurrence following mastectomy.     

Autoantibodies to the insulin receptor. Effect on the insulin-receptor interaction in IM-9 lymphocytes

The serum of some patients with insulin-resistant "diabetes" contains antibodies that bind to and block the cell membrane receptors for insulin. In this report, we have characterized the effects of the antireceptor antibodies on the interaction of (125)I-insulin with its receptor on the human lymphoblastoid cell line IM-9. Up to 95% of specific insulin binding can be inhibited by pretreatment of the cells with these immunoglobulins. The onset of the inhibitory effect is time- and temperature-dependent, and the effect is reversed extremely slowly if the cells are suspended in a large excess of antibody-free buffer. These features of antibody binding can be easily distinguished from those for insulin binding to its receptor. The inhibitory effect of the antibodies can be reversed by exposure of the cells to conditions known to elute surface immunoglobulins. The three antireceptor sera studied appear to alter the insulin-receptor interaction in different ways. Two antisera markedly reduce receptor affinity through combined effects on the insulin association and dissociation rates, and, additionally, have smaller effects on available receptor number. A third antiserum primarily affects available receptor number and has little effect on receptor affinity. All three antisera inhibit the capacity of insulin to promote negatively cooperative site-site interactions among insulin receptors. The data suggest that these autoantibodies to the insulin receptor bind to different determinants on the receptor and may therefore be useful as unique probes of insulin receptor structure and function.     

Subcritical free-surface flow caused by a line source in a fluid of finite depth

An integral equation is derived and solved numerically to compute the flow and the free surface shape generated when water flows from a line source into a fluid of finite depth. At very low values of the Froude number, stagnation point solutions are found to exist over a continuous range in the parameter space. For each value of the source submergence depth to free stream depth ratio, an upper bound on the existence of stagnation point solutions is found. These results are compared with existing known solutions. A second integral equation formulation is discussed which investigates the hypothesis that these upper bounds correspond to the formation of waves on the free surface. No waves are found, however, and the results of the first method are confirmed.     

Factors affecting length of herdlife in purebred and crossbred dairy cattle

The proportional hazards model with censoring was used to assess the effects of breeding value, disease, calving, size, and udder and lactation traits on length of herdlife of 3881 heifers in five herds. Data were recorded over 10 yr from three lines: a Holstein line, an Ayrshire-based line, and a crossbred line. Influences on survival were assessed from data collected at birth, 34, 50, and 82 wk, first freshening, and at 112 and 308 d postpartum. Median estimated herdlife (age at 50% culling) was 3.9 yr for animals alive at first freshening and increased to 4.3 yr for those that completed a first lactation (308 d postpartum). Herds differed greatly in the pattern of culling after freshening. Crossbred females had 21 wk longer median estimated herdlife than the mean of the purelines at 308 d postpartum. Individual milk yield was positively associated with longevity and had the greatest impact on length of herdlife. Abortion and fertility measured as days to last insemination were negatively associated with length of herdlife. Large heifers tended to have increased longevity. High feed intake postpartum was associated with reduced length of herdlife. Objective measures of conformation, which included measurements of the udder, were not important in determining herdlife.     

Telomerase activity and telomere lengths in various cell lines: changes of telomerase activity can be another method for chemosensitivity evaluation

For the cancer cells which have overcome the second mitotic clock (M2), activated telomerase is essential and used as another marker of immortality. Many trials had been initiated to target telomerase, which is known to be specific to tumors. To determine the best in vitro cell system for testing the efficacy of telomerase inhibitors, we evaluated the telomerase activity of various cancer cell lines and measured their telomere lengths. We also treated some cancer cell lines with adriamycin and measured the changes of telomerase activity. Telomerase activity was evaluated in various cell lines with the TRAP (telomeric repeat amplification protocol) assay. Telomerase activity was calculated and translated into arbitrary units by computer-assisted densitometry with the control of telomerase activity in the 293 control cell line. Also, terminal restriction fragment lengths were measured using Southern blotting. We also measured telomerase activity and telomere lengths in 11 benign breast tumor tissues and 19 paired stomach cancer and normal tissues. Cancer cell lines treated with adriamycin we evaluated for changes of telomerase activity and the cell proliferation by MTT assay and dye exclusion test. Telomerase activity of cell lines was 95.3 24.1 unit with a range of 27.6-129.6 unit, while the telomere lengths of those cell lines were variable from 5.0 to 10.4 kbp with a median of 6 kbp. In 11 cancer cell lines which were not yet firmly established, we could not detect any telomerase activity. Low telomerase activity was detected in only 2 benign tumor tissues of breast with a median telomere length of 8.8 (7-10.5) kbp. Among paired 19 gastric cancer and normal tissues, only 7 cancer tissues showed weak telomerase activity. After adriamycin treatment, telomerase activity in YCC-S-1, YCC-S-3, MCF-7 and MCF-7/ADR was decreased in accordance with the changes of the cell numbers. Telomerase is specific to cancer tissues and is expressed differently from organ to organ. Telomerase activity by TRAP assay could be used as a chemosensitivity assay.     

The association rate constant for heme binding to globin is independent of protein structure

Rate constants for CO-heme binding to 35 different recombinant apomyoglobins and several other apoproteins were measured in an effort to understand the factors governing heme affinity and the velocity of the association reaction. Surprisingly, the rate constant for the binding of monomeric heme is approximately 1 x 10(8) M-1 s-1 regardless of the structure or overall affinity of the apoprotein for iron-porphyrin. Major differences between the proteins are reflected primarily in the rates of dissociation of the prosthetic group. Slow phases observed in the reaction of CO heme with excess apomyoglobin result from formation of nonspecific heme-protein complexes which must dissociate before heme can bind specifically in the heme pocket. Once the specific heme-globin complex is formed, the heme pocket rapidly collapses around the porphyrin, simultaneously forming the bond between the proximal His93 and the heme iron atom. The overall affinity of sperm whale apomyoglobin for hemin is approximately 1 x 10(14) M-1. Nonspecific hydrophobic interactions between the porphyrin and the apolar heme cavity account for a factor of 10(5)-10(7). Covalent bond formation between Fe3+ and His93(F8) provides an additional factor of 10(3)-10(4). Specific interactions with conserved amino acids in the heme pocket contribute the final factor of 10(3)-10(4).     

Working Group Report 2: In situ caries models, saliva, microbiology, and statistical considerations

We present a case of a single coronary artery where the right coronary artery (RCA) arose from its proximal part. This rare anomaly was detected during elective coronary angiography in a patient with suspected coronary artery disease. The single coronary artery originated from the left sinus of valsalva, giving rise to RCA proximally and distally dividing into left anterior descending (LAD), ramus intermedius and left circumflex (LCX) arteries. The anginal symptoms in this patient was attributed to a significant stenosis at the proximal LAD which was subsequently dilated by coronary angioplasty. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of angioplasty of LAD in an anomalous single coronary artery.
