Bioresorbable electronic systems represent an emerging class of technology of interest due to their ability to dissolve, chemically degrade, disintegrate, and/or otherwise physically disappear harmlessly in biological environments, as the basis for temporary implants that avoid the need for secondary surgical extraction procedures. Polyanhydride‐based polymers can serve as hydrophobic encapsulation layers for such systems, as a subset of the broader field of transient electronics, where biodegradation eventually occurs by chain scission. Systematic experimental studies that involve immersion in phosphate‐buffered saline solution at various pH values and/or temperatures demonstrate that dissolution occurs through a surface erosion mechanism, with little swelling. The mechanical properties of this polymer are well suited for use in soft, flexible devices, where integration can occur through a mold‐based photopolymerization technique. Studies of the dependence of the polymer properties on monomer compositions and the rates of permeation on coating thicknesses reveal some of the underlying effects. Simple demonstrations illustrate the ability to sustain operation of underlying biodegradable electronic systems for durations between a few hours to a week during complete immersion in aqueous solutions that approximate physiological conditions. Systematic chemical, physical, and in vivo biological studies in animal models reveal no signs of toxicity or other adverse biological responses.  相似文献

One method of transmitting wavelet based zerotree encoded images over noisy channels is to add channel coding without altering the source coder. A second method is to reorder the embedded zerotree bitstream into packets containing a small set of wavelet coefficient trees. We consider a hybrid mixture of these two approaches and demonstrate situations in which the hybrid image coder can outperform either of the two building block methods, namely on channels that can suffer packet losses as well as statistically varying bit errors.  相似文献

When a CCD array is used to detect the spatial fringes of optical interference, interesting features emerge in the output as the width of each fringe approaches the dimension of a CCD sensing cell. These features are theoretically studied and their application to the enhancement of the dynamic operating range of electrically scanned white-light interferometry is investigated. Repetitive processes are a distinct class of two-dimensional (2-D) systems (i.e., information propagation in two independent directions) of both systems theoretic and applications interest. They cannot be controlled by direct extension of existing techniques from either standard [termed one-dimensional (1-D) here] or 2-D systems theory. Here, we give new results on the relatively open problem of the design of control laws using an H/sub /spl infin// setting. Exploitation of the international 14/11 GHz communications bands will probably follow the same pattern as that of the 6/4 GHz bands. First, the available monopolarized bandwidth will be filled. Next, multiple beams that use spatial isolation to provide frequency reuse will be developed. Finally, full dual-polarized operation will be employed. In the 14/11 GHz bands, rain can cause appreciable attenuation and depolarization. In some instances, dual polarized links will be depolarization limited. If up-link power control is implemented on attenuation dominated paths, depolarization can again dominate, owing to interference constraints. In both cases, a measure of depolarization compensation needs to be introduced to reduce the impact of interference. Part I of this paper quantifies this problem and establishes a set of reference statistics which can be used to assess the need for impairment restoration. Part II will discuss several ways of reducing the system impact of path depolarization.  相似文献

Organic production benefits from fair competition and sustained consumer confidence. The latter can only be assured by paper trailing and verification assessments. Traditional analytical strategies for guaranteeing quality and uncovering adulteration have relied on the determination of the amount of a marker compound or compounds in a material and a subsequent comparison of the value(s) obtained with those established for equivalent material. Since it is unlikely to find a unique marker that allows discrimination between organic and conventional produce, selective fingerprinting (profiling) combined with chemometrics is a more promising approach. In this study, carotenoid High Performance Liquid Chromatography–Diode Array Detection profiling combined with k-nearest neighbour classification chemometrics was used to predict the production system (organic vs. non-organic) of chicken eggs. A proof-of-concept set (training set for the model) was composed of eggs from 24 organic farms, 12 free range, and 12 barn farms in the Netherlands. The identities of organic, free range, and barn eggs were predicted with success rates of 100%, 100%, and 84%, respectively. The identity of eggs determined using an additional market test set with eggs from 12 organic, 12 free range, and 12 barn farms originating from the Netherlands and New Zealand resulted in correct classifications for 35 of the 36 samples. The results of this study indicate that this fingerprint approach is a promising tool for analytical verification of the production system of organic eggs.  相似文献

We have investigated the survival of Callosobruchus maculatus larvae when reared on resistant IT81D 1045 Vigna unguiculata seeds, whose resistance has been associated with variant forms of vicilins. Here, we present data which show that larvae of C. maculatus feeding on embryonic axis of resistant cowpea reach a mass of around 28 times higher than those feeding on cotyledonary tissues. Additionally, incorporation of 5–10% of embryonic axis flour on artificial seeds made of resistant flour restores toxicity of seeds to the bruchid. Vicilins purified from both susceptible and resistant embryonic axis had no deleterious effects either on insect development or on insect survival until a level of 4% of incorporation. In contrast, vicilins from resistant cotyledons show an LD50 (50% lethal dose) and WD50 (half weight dose) of 2%. Total vicilin contents of embryonic axes were around two times lower than in cotyledonary tissues, while proteolytic activities of all four proteinase classes were always higher in the former tissues. Erythropoietin excretion was persistently increased following major thermal injury in 4 of 5 patients. A good correlation was found between erythropoietin excretion and red cell mass but not between erythropoietin excretion and hematocrit. In spite of the increased erythropoietin, erythropoiesis in these thermally injured patients was inadequate to compensate for erythrocyte deficits as judged by bone marrow morphology, reticulocyte counts, and transfusion requirements.  相似文献
