We calculated the electrostatic force between a planar interface, such as a planar-supported lipid bilayer membrane, and the tip of a stylus on which another lipid bilayer or some other biomacromolecular system might be deposited. We considered styli with rounded tips as well as conical tips. To take into account the effect of dynamical hydrogen-bonded structures in the aqueous phase, we used a theory of nonlocal electrostatics. We used the Derjaguin approximation and identified the systems for which its use is valid. We pointed out where our approach differs from previous calculations and to what extent the latter are inadequate. We found that 1) the nonlocal interactions have significant effects over distances of 10-15 A from the polar zone and that, at the surface of this zone, the effect on the calculated force can be some orders of magnitude; 2) the lipid dipoles and charges are located a distance L from the hydrophobic layer in the aqueous medium and this can have consequences that may not be appreciated if it is ignored; 3) dipoles, located in the aqueous region, can give rise to forces even though the polar layer is unchanged, and if this is ignored the interpretation of force data can be erroneous if an attempt is made to rationalize an observed force with a knowledge of an uncharged surface; 4) the shape of the stylus tip can be very important, and a failure to take this into account can result in incorrect conclusions, a point made by other workers; and 5) when L is nonzero, the presence of charges and dipoles can yield a force that can be nonmonotonic as a function of ionic concentration. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain effects of x-ray beam centering and limb position on apparent congruity of a normal cubital joint (elbow). ANIMALS: 6 skeletally mature male Treeing Walker Coonhounds without physical, radiographic, or gross evidence of elbow abnormalities. PROCEDURE: Relative movement among humerus, radius, and ulna and measured joint space width on mediolateral and craniocaudal radiographic views was compared, using various x-ray beam centering and limb positions. RESULTS: Highest agreement and greatest certainty on subjective determination of congruity was for the flexed 90 degrees mediolateral radiographic view with the x-ray beam centered on the elbow. Distortion artifact of the proximal ulnar measurements was significant when the x-ray beam was centered on the midpoint of the radius. On the mediolateral view, the humeroradial joint space became significantly wide when the elbow was flexed. On the craniocaudal view, maximal humeroradial joint space width was obtained when the x-ray beam bisected the angle of the joint or was angled +30 degrees toward the humerus. CONCLUSIONS: Artifact distortion of joint width affected objective and subjective assessment of elbow congruity when the limb was placed in extreme flexion or extension or when the x-ray beam was not centered over the area of interest. Optimal visualization of the humeroradial joint space on the craniocaudal view was achieved when the x-ray beam bisected the angle of the elbow or was slightly angled toward the humerus. Primary beneficiation was successfully performed prior to dissolution of manganotantalite (sample A) and ferrotantalite (sample C) samples obtained from two different mines in the Naquissupa area, Mozambique. Magnetic separation removed the majority of iron and titanium, whereas H2SO4 leaching removed a large portion of thorium and uranium in these samples. Analytical results indicated that 64.14wt% and 72.04wt% of the total Fe and Ti, respectively, and -2wt% each of Nb205 and Ta205 were removed from sample C (ferrotantalite) using the magnetic separation method, whereas only 9.64wt% and 8.66wt% of total Fe203 and TiO2, respectively, and -2wt% each of NbEOs and Ta2O5 were removed from sample A (manganotantalite). A temperature of 50℃ and a leaching time of 3 h in the presence of concentrated HESOa were observed to be the most appropriate leaching conditions for removal of radioactive elements from the tantalite ores. The results obtained for sample A under these conditions indicated that 64.14wt% U3O8 and 60.77wt% ThO2 were leached into the acidic solution, along with 4.45wt% and 0.99wt% of Nb2O5 and Ta2O5, respectively. 相似文献

Abstract
Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy at the sub-?ngstr?m resolution allows imaging the structure of catalytic materials at the single atom level and permits fundamental studies of the behavior of heavy metal catalytic species as a result of elevated temperature gas-treatments. The present study is aimed at understanding the development of clusters and nanoparticles of Pt on γ-alumina during reduction treatments of a pre-oxidized highly dispersed catalyst. A special built ex situ reactor and a specimen holder allowing cyclic anaerobic transfer between the reactor and microscope were used for the study. The number of atoms in a nascent cluster can be determined along with the general shape of the cluster. Reduction experiments without air exposure of the sample showed that although clusters are formed at 500 °C, many Pt atoms are not associated with the cluster and are still dispersed on the catalyst support. After a 700 °C reduction, all of the Pt atoms are associated with the clusters. Movement of the clusters on the catalyst support is different depending upon the catalyst support. 相似文献36.

A number of possible non-chromate conversion coating formulations have been studied to examine their efficacy as replacements for chromate-based coating treatments on electrodeposited zinc-nickel alloys. Data have been collected from both electrochemical and conventional salt fog corrosion tests. In the latter tests all the alternative non-chromate systems studied delayed the onset of the corrosion of the zinc-nickel coating itself but only the simple molybdate and the permanganatelmolybdate dual treatment brought about improvements in times to red rusting of the steel substrate. The electrochemical evaluations suggested that simple molybdate-treated surfaces act as only moderate barriers to the chloride environments. Of the two dual treatments, permanganatel molybdate behaved similarly to the simple molybdate treated surfaces in the electrochemical tests, but the molybdatel permanganate was more protective, although this was not exhibited in the salt fog corrosion tests. 相似文献

This paper presents an example-based discussion of erosion–corrosion and flow corrosion processes that have been identified using electrochemical noise measurements. Various single and dual phase corrosion and erosion–corrosion experiments on austenitic stainless steels and various thermally sprayed coatings using jet impingement and pipe flow rigs are discussed. Localised corrosion events, metastable and propagating pitting, passive and general corrosion processes have been identified under various flow conditions of NaCl solutions. Oscillations in the electrochemical potential noise signals have been related to an erosion-enhanced corrosion synergistic effect. Electrochemical noise measurements show responses to electrolyte permeation of the coating, coating erosion penetration and substrate activity under erosion–corrosion conditions. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Copolymers of acrylic acid (AA) are important materials for the preparation of glass ionomer cements. Copolymerisation of AA is widely used to alter the acid strength of the material and to increase the number of salt bridges formed in cements. In this paper we report the copolymerisation of AA with n‐butyl vinyl ether (BVE) to form unique copolymers of the hemiacetal ester and with BVE incorporated into the main chain. RESULTS: AA and BVE undergo a spontaneous reaction to form a hemiacetal ester which can itself undergo free radical copolymerisation. The kinetics of this reaction in the bulk state have been examined. In addition, under these conditions BVE is incorporated into the polymer main chain via a free radical mechanism. CONCLUSION: Novel copolymers of the hemiacetal ester and BVE have been prepared in this study. The hemiacetal side chains are labile under moderate heating, being converted back to the acid analogue.
