Processing and characterization of a biaxially oriented conducting polymer

Two methods have been developed for the preparation of biaxially oriented poly(phenylene vinylene) from its poly(sulfonium salt) precursor. A two-stage stretching process permits non-equibiaxial stretching over a wide range of deformation ratios and a bubble expansion technique allows equibiaxial planar extension. The resulting films were examined using X-ray diffraction prior to chemical doping with SbF₅ vapor. Biaxial orientation was shown to exert considerable influence over the attainable electrical conductivity.     

Influence of ventilation on indoor radon level

Detailed radon measurements were conducted at different residential units in Hong Kong in winter time when air-conditioners were off and also in summer time when air-conditioners were on. Ventilation rates were measured concurrently to investigate the influence of ventilation on indoor radon level. The ratio of indoor radon level to outdoor radon level was plotted against ventilation rate, and it was found that a critical value existed after which the indoor radon level could be considered identical to the outdoor level. This result is important for use in ventilation design to reduce indoor radon pollution.     

Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis of solution conformations in C4-V3 hybrid peptides derived from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 gp120: relation to specificity of peptide-induced anti-HIV neutralizing antibodies

Immunogenic peptides containing epitopes of the gp120 C4 and V3 regions from human immunodeficiency virus strains MN and EV91 have been studied by nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular modeling and used as immunogens in rhesus monkeys. The results, combined with those for other peptides, suggest a correlation between solution conformation and immunologic cross-reactivity.     

Altering the course of marriage: The effect of PREP communication skills acquisition on couples' risk of becoming maritally distressed.

This longitudinal study predicted marital outcome from communication skills gained from participation in the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP; H. J. Markman, S. L. Blumberg & S. M. Stanley, 1989; Stanley et al., 2001) by 39 women and 38 men. Results were in the expected direction for men but not for women. Men's pre- to posttest decrease in negative communication and increase in positive communication predicted decreased risk of marital distress onset in men. Women's pre- to posttest increase in positive communication, which was related to self-reported avoidance of problem solving, predicted an increased risk of male and female distress onset. Couples with men relatively high on premarital risk factors demonstrated a greater benefit from men's positive communication skills acquisition. Oncogenic RAS genes impair erythroid differentiation of erythroleukaemia cells

RAS mutations occur frequently in acute myeloid leukaemia and myelodysplasia, suggesting a functional role for this oncogene in leukaemogenesis. We show here, for the first time, that both N-RAS and H-RAS can impair erythroid differentiation of erythroleukaemia cells induced with hexamethylene bisacetamide. Transformation by RAS allowed extended proliferation in the presence of inducer and also inhibited maturation as measured by impaired haemoglobinization and reduction in cell size. These data provide an interesting counterpoint to the effect of mutant RAS on monocytic cells, where it has a potentiating effect on differentiation and may indicate a causal link between the activation of RAS and erythroid lineage dysplasia in preleukaemia.     

Synergy between an antibody and CD8+ cells in eliminating an established tumor

We investigated the effector mechanisms operating during the rejection of a transplantable solid lymphoma E.G7 (H-2b) which expresses the gene encoding chicken ovalbumin (OVA). Anti-OVA cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) completely and specifically protected animals from the onset of, but could not eradicate established, E.G7 tumors. The growth of the same lymphoma was also effectively prevented by the antibody GK1.5, whose target molecule, CD4, was expressed on E.G7 cells in vivo. Furthermore, GK1.5 was able to eradicate established solid E.G7 tumors. GK1.5-mediated tumor elimination was due to its antitumor activity, and not to the elimination of regulatory CD4+ cells, based on unimpaired tumor growth in the absence of GK1.5 in animals that genetically lack CD4 T cells. In vitro, GK1.5 did not kill tumor cells: complement activation or apoptosis induction were not evident. In vivo, GK1.5-mediated tumor regression did not depend on natural killer cells, but it absolutely required CD8+ cells and intact Fcgamma receptor. We conclude that, in the E.G7 model, the collaboration of antibody and CTL immunity was crucial for the successful immunotherapy of established tumors. The mechanism of this collaboration is discussed.
