Age adjusted mortality in Belgium (B) and The Netherlands (NL) was calculated from 5 yearly age-specific death rates between the ages 45-74 and 75-85+ years. Mortality was available in Belgium from 1954 to 1991 or 1994 (depending on the cause of death) and from 1950 to 1993 in The Netherlands. In the 45-74 years age class all-cause mortality decreased in B between 1955 and 1992 with 33% in men and 48% in women. In NL this was 11% and 40%, respectively. In the age class 75-85+ it was 21% and 37% in B, and 4% and 36% in NL, respectively. Since 1980 to the last available year there was a marked decrease in mortality in the age class 75-85+ years in men and women from B and no change in NL. Wallonia always had the highest mortality, followed by B, Flanders and NL. However, recently the observed mortality in Flanders was the lowest. Mortality trends, in both age classes and sexes, were obtained between 1980 to the last available year for 11 causes of death in men and 13 in women. Among 48 possible comparisons, 38 (79%) were in favor of B, 9 in favor of NL and 1 ex aequo. Life expectancy in 1992 was compared in the 15 EU countries. For both sexes together B ranked 8th, NL 3rd. The difference in life expectancy between the two countries was 3 year in 1967 and 1 year in 1992. Flanders ranked 5th (0.3 year lower than NL) and Wallonia 14th (2.2 years lower) when substituted for B in the EU. Portugal had the best and Denmark had the worst results between 1967 and 1992). Changes in life style-fat, salt, fruit and vegetable intake and smoking habits -which occurred since 1960 in B, its regions and in NI are consistent with the changes in mortality and life expectancy. In this study we assessed different magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning regimes and examined some of the assumptions commonly made for measuring body fat content by MRI. Whole body MRI was used to quantify and study different body fat depots in 67 women. The whole body MRI results showed that there was a significant variation in the percentage of total internal, as well as visceral, adipose tissue across a range of adiposity, which could not be predicted from total body fat and/or subcutaneous fat. Furthermore, variation in the amount of total, subcutaneous, and visceral adipose tissue was not related to standard anthropometric measurements such as skinfold measurements, body mass index, and waist-to-hip ratio. Finally, we show for the first time subjects with a percent body fat close to the theoretical maximum (68%). This study demonstrates that the large variation in individual internal fat content cannot be predicted from either indirect methods or direct imaging techniques, such as MRI or computed tomography, on the basis of a single-slice sampling strategy. 相似文献

We determined the effects of two classical angiotensin II (ANG II) antagonists, [Sar1, Ala8]-ANG II and [Sar1, Thr8]-ANG II, and losartan (a nonpeptide and selective antagonist for the AT1 angiotensin receptors) on diuresis, natriuresis, kaliuresis and arterial blood pressure induced by ANG II administration into the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) of male Holtzman rats weighing 250-300 g. Urine was collected in rats submitted to a water load (5% body weight) 1 h later. The volume of the drug solutions injected was 0.5 microliters over 10-15 s. Pre-treatment with [Sar1, Ala8]-ANG II (12 rats) and [Sar1, Thr8]-ANG II (9 rats), at the dose of 60 ng reduced (13.7 +/- 1.0 vs 11.0 +/0 1.0 and 10.7 +/0 1.2, respectively), whereas losartan (14 rats) at the dose of 160 ng totally blocked (13.7 +/- 1.0 vs 7.6 +/- 1.5) the urine excretion induced by injection o 12 ng of ANG II (14 rats). [Sar1, Ala8]-ANG II impaired Na+ excretion (193 +/- 16 vs 120 +/- 19), whereas [Sar1, Thr8]-ANG II and losartan block Na+ excretion (193 +/- 16 vs 77 +/- 15 and 100 +/- 12, respectively) induced by ANG II. Similar effects induced by ANG II on K+ excretion were observed with [Sar1, Ala8]-ANG II, [Sar1, Thr8]- ANG II, and losartan pretreatment (133 +/- 18 vs 108 +/- 11, 80 +/- 12, and 82 +/- 15, respectively). The same doses as above of [Sar1, Ala8]-ANG II (8 rats), [Sar1, Thr8]-ANG II (8 rats), and losartan (9 rats) blocked the increase in the arterial blood pressure induced by 12 ng of ANG II (12 rats) (32 +/- 4 vs 4 +/- 2, 3.5 +/- 1, and 2 +/- 1, respectively. The results indicate that the AT1 receptor subtype participates in the increases of diuresis, natriuresis, kaliuresis and arterial blood pressure induced by the administration of ANG II into the MnPO. 相似文献

A rectangular channel electrophoresis system and a cylindrical sampling capillary combination allows chemical changes in nanoliter-volume samples to be monitored as a function of time. The electrophoretic microseparation is carried out in a rectangular channel with a 7 -cm-long, 40-microm x 2.5-cm geometry and is coupled to a 50-microm-i.d. cylindrical sample introduction capillary. The channel width dimension is used as a time axis by moving the outlet of the sampling capillary across the entrance of the separation channel. Detection of the separated analyte bands is achieved with laser-induced fluorescence and spatially resolved detection based on a charge-coupled device. The system is characterized with a series of fluorescein thiocarbamyl amino acid derivatives; limits of detection are < 10(-8) M for amino acids and 10(-9)M (425 zmol) for fluorescein. The ability to achieve a time-based dynamic microseparation is demonstrated by monitoring fluorescent product formation during the enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis of fluorescein di-beta-D-galactopyranoside (FDG), a commonly used fluorescent substrate for enzymological studies. 相似文献

Hemodynamic, respiratory, and regional blood flow measurements were carried out in two groups of monkeys at three roughly equivalent stages of endotoxin and hemorrhagic shock. Comparisons revealed characteristic differences at the two early stages, particularly in systemic vascular resistance and the pattern of distribution of cardiac output. However, at the final stage of shock, these patterns had merged and there were no characteristic differences between the two groups. The pathologic significance of these findings, in terms of the endotoxin theory of irreversible hemorrhagic shock and the realtive contributions of vasoactive humoral substances at various stages of the two forms of shock, is discussed. 相似文献

Lactobacillus murinus, a new species isolated from rat and mouse digestive tracts, is described. It belongs to the subgenus Thermobacterium although it is able to ferment pentoses. The electrophoretic mobilities of soluble proteins and lactic dehydrogenase, the guanine + cytosine content (43.7%), the L-lysine-D-Aspartic acid cell wall (b type, Kandler), the immunological relationship with other Lactobacillus species and also the aminoacid requirements show that it has to be assigned to a new species, Lactobacillus murinus. This species settles in the digestive tract of rodents in their first days of life and remains ther as a dominant flora throughtout the whole life of the animal. 相似文献
