Reprocessing of cadmium-containing wastes and used storage batteries produces cadmium oxide. Electrowinning of the metal from an alkali melt is proposed for processing of CdO and production of metallic cadmium or cadmium–sodium alloys. The design of a laboratory electrolyzer is discussed. Technological parameters of the electrolysis process are determined. Applied and engineering aspects of the electrowinning of cadmium and cadmium–sodium alloys are considered. Conditions of the electrolytic production of cadmium are optimized. Specific features of the electrochemical production of cadmium–sodium alloys are analyzed. Electrowinning of cadmium from an acid or chloride solution is considered. The comparison of the electrolysis of aqueous solutions and alkali melts is in favor of the latter.  相似文献

Pneumoperitoneum signals gastrointestinal perforation and, as a rule, requires prompt laparotomy. However, we have recently encountered infants with severe respiratory distress who developed pneumoperitoneum without any gastrointestinal leak. These 10 patients were managed without operations. Three patients survived the respiratory distress and subsequently manifested no gastrointestinal disturbances. Five patients who died of pulmonary disease after conservative management of pneumoperitoneum had autopsies that revealed no gastrointestinal disease. We found no clinical or radiographic signs of peritonitis in these patients. Paracentesis and gastrointestinal x-rays revealed no gastrointestinal perforation. These critically ill newborns were thereby spared an unnecessary laparotomy. This experience confirms previous reports in the literature that, by clinical and radiographic correlations, "medical" pneumoperitoneum can often by distinguished from "surgical" pneumoperitoneum in critically ill infants with respiratory distress who may not easily tolerate an unnecessary laparotomy.  相似文献

Aerodynamic and acoustic characteristics were determined from the speech of an adult female with mild mental retardation and severe velopharyngeal inadequacy. The speaker's productions of /s/ were characterized by consistent nasal grimacing and turbulent air emission. Aerodynamic assessment estimated the size of the velopharyngeal orifice to exceed 200 mm2 during plosive production. Nasal cross-sectional area was estimated to be 35 mm2 during quiet breathing. Nasometric evaluation indicated nasalance of 63% associated with the "Zoo" passage. Acoustic analysis of the separately recorded oral and nasal speech signals indicated spectral energies in the region of approximately 2.5 to 7.0 kHz associated with nasal emission during /s/ production. The occurrence of these frequencies suggested an acoustic/perceptual function of the nasal grimace. Pressure-flow evidence also suggested that the nasal grimace, perhaps with lingual assistance, functioned to enhance speech aerodynamics.  相似文献

Atopy is a genetically determined disorder that affects 10%-20% of the population. Many symptoms of patients with atopy (allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, and anaphylaxis) result from events occurring after crosslinking of cell-bound IgE by per se innocuous environmental antigens. The frequently raised hypothesis that autosensitization can also be a pathogenetic factor in atopy, gained support by our recent demonstration of IgE antibodies against human proteins in atopic dermatitis patients. To unravel the molecular nature of IgE-defined autoantigens, we used serum IgE from atopic dermatitis patients to screen a human epithelial cDNA expression library. One of the cDNA-encoding IgE-reactive products contained 1501 bp of a 2274 bp open-reading frame finally identified by sequence analysis of two additional cDNA clones resulting from oligonucleotide screening. The IgE-defined autoantigen, designated Hom s 1, exhibited an almost complete sequence identity with a recently described antigen recognized by cytotoxic T cells of a squamous cell carcinoma patient. Purified recombinant Hom s 1 specifically bound IgE from patients with severe atopy. When used as immunogen in rabbits, recombinant Hom s 1 gave rise to an anti-serum that reacted with a cytoplasmic protein exhibiting a broad cellular and tissue reactivity (skin, lung > gastrointestinal tract > muscle, brain) and identified a 55 kDa protein in blotted serum IgE preparations. The attractive possibility remains that the Hom s 1-triggered IgE response contributes to the events resulting in allergic tissue inflammation. If so, the respective recombinant molecule may serve as a paradigmatic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with "intrinsic" atopy.  相似文献

Using a hard sphere model and numerical calculations, the effect of the hydration force between a conical tip and a flat surface in the atomic force microscope (AFM) is examined. The numerical results show that the hydration force remains oscillatory, even down to a tip apex of a single water molecule, but its lateral extent is limited to a size of a few water molecules. In general, the contribution of the hydration force is relatively small, but, given the small imaging force ( approximately 0.1 nN) typically used for biological specimens, a layer of water molecules is likely to remain "bound" to the specimen surface. This water layer, between the tip and specimen, could act as a "lubricant" to reduce lateral force, and thus could be one of the reasons for the remarkably high resolution achieved with contact-mode AFM. To disrupt this layer, and to have a true tip-sample contact, a probe force of several nanonewtons would be required. The numerical results also show that the ultimate apex of the tip will determine the magnitude of the hydration force, but that the averaged hydration pressure is independent of the radius of curvature. This latter conclusion suggests that there should be no penalty for the use of sharper tips if hydration force is the dominant interaction between the tip and the specimen, which might be realizable under certain conditions. Furthermore, the calculated hydration energy near the specimen surface compares well with experimentally determined values with an atomic force microscope, providing further support to the validity of these calculations.  相似文献

Glutaric acidemia type I (GAI) (McKusick 231670) is an autosomal recessive disease affecting the catabolism of the amino acids lysine, hydroxylysine and tryptophan, caused by a defect in the gene encoding glutaryl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase (GCDH) and associated with severe neurological symptoms. Several pathogenic mutations in GCDH have been reported to cause GAI. One mutation, R402W, is more common than the others, which seem to be private" mutations. Here we report the entire sequences of introns 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9, and part of those of introns 4, 5 and 10 as well as 21 different mutations in 20 patients with GAI, corresponding to 38 out of 40 alleles.  相似文献

PURPOSE: An individualized midline shield (MLS) has been advocated for delivering homogeneous radiotherapy for patients with invasive cervical carcinoma. Yet, many radiation oncologists continue to employ a standard block. In the latter instance, any deviation of the cranial-caudal central axis of he tandem from the patient's midline could result in dose inhomogeneity to tumor. A retrospective review of a single university medical center's experience with constructing the MLS was initiated to determine the outcome of using a standard block vs. a customized block that conforms to the "Point A" isodose line. In addition, participating radiation oncologists associated with the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) were polled to assess if there exists a consensus regarding midline block utilization in the management of cervical cancer patients which could be compared to the institutional study. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From January 1, 1990 through December 31, 1992, 32 patients with invasive cervical carcinoma who underwent low dose rate brachytherapy at a single institution were identified. Patients were grouped as having a standard block (18 cases), customized block (5 cases), or no block (9 cases). The "Point A" isodose distribution from the implant was superimposed onto the whole pelvic simulation film and quantitatively compared to the actual or a hypothetical standard block outlined on the same radiograph. In September of 1995, 56 member and affiliated institutions in the GOG were surveyed concerning their use of a MLS, and the results were tabulated in December of 1995. RESULTS: Approximately 72% of all cases (23 out of 32) at the single institution had tandem deviation ranging from 0-230 with a median of 50. This translated into a median percent overdosage to "Point A" Right of 15% and "Point A" Left of 12.5%. Although overall survival and incidence of chronic complications have not been affected by type of shielding, patient follow-up is limited with a median of 17.7 months (range: 4.2-58.9 months). Of the 56 surveyed radiation facilities in the GOG, 34 (61%) responded. One center was subsequently excluded as it performs only high dose rate brachytherapy. Of the evaluable respondents, 88% (29 out of 33) utilize a MLS in treating their patients with invasive cervical carcinoma. Of the latter group, 76% (22 out of 29), 21% (6 out of 29), and 3% (1 out of 29) employ a standard block, customized block, and a "step-wedge," respectively. For those using a standard block, 77% (17 out of 22) align the central cranial-caudal axis of the MLS along the corresponding midplane of the patient's pelvis on an anteroposterior radiograph rather than along the superior-inferior central axis of the tandem. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the use of a standard midline shield could result in potential tumor dose inhomogeneity and should be avoided. A national survey of major academic centers further suggests that the majority of these facilities also utilize a rectangular central block that is not positioned with respect to possible tandem deviation. Further investigation concerning the techniques of midline shield construction should be considered.  相似文献

I recorded the electric organ discharges (EODs) of 331 immature Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus 6-88 mm long. Larvae produced head-positive pulses 1.3 ms long at 7 mm (6 days) and added a second, small head-negative phase at 12 mm. Both phases shortened duration and increased amplitude during growth. Relative to the whole EOD, the negative phase increased duration until 22 mm and amplitude until 37 mm. Fish above 37 mm produced a "symmetric" EOD like that of adult females. I stained cleared fish with Sudan black, or fluorescently labeled serial sections with anti-desmin (electric organ) or anti-myosin (muscle). From day 6 onward, a single electric organ was found at the ventral margin of the hypaxial muscle. Electrocytes were initially cylindrical, overlapping, and stalk-less, but later shortened along the rostrocaudal axis, separated into rows, and formed caudal stalks. This differentiation started in the posterior electric organ in 12-mm fish and was complete in the anterior region of fish with "symmetric" EODs. The lack of a distinct "larval" electric organ in this pulse-type species weakens the hypothesis that all gymnotiforms develop both a temporary (larval) and a permanent (adult) electric organ.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To explore the physiological mechanism of ischemic tolerance, we studied intracerebral oxygenation states noninvasively using near-infrared spectroscopy after bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCO) in gerbils with and without ischemic pretreatment. METHODS: Under ether anesthesia, gerbils with sham operation (S group, n = 8) and those with pretreatment consisting of BCO for 2 minutes, twice at 3 days and 2 days earlier (T group, n = 8), were again subjected to BCO for 5 minutes. Changes in oxyhemoglobin (HbO2), deoxyhemoglobin (Hb), and total hemoglobin (HbT) as well as reduction in cytochrome oxidase (cyt.aa3) were calculated from the absorbance changes of the light transmitted through the brain. Seven days after the ischemic study, immunohistochemical examination was performed with an antiserum against microtubule-associated proteins. RESULTS: In both groups, the increase of Hb and decrease of HbO2 and HbT proceeded rapidly after BCO, and the maximal deoxygenation of hemoglobin occurred within 2.5 minutes. Reduction of cyt.aa3 also ensued rapidly and reached the maximal reduction within 3 minutes in both groups. In the T group, however, both deoxygenation of hemoglobin and reduction of cyt.aa3 progressed more slowly than in the S group. The time (seconds) necessary for a maximal change for cyt.aa3 was significantly longer in the T group (203.8 +/- 34.0 [mean +/- SD]; P < .01) than in the S group (68.0 +/- 14.7). The time necessary for a half-maximal change was also significantly longer in the T group than in the S group for both Hb (22.0 +/- 7.5 and 13.5 +/- 4.0, respectively; P < .05) and cyt.aa3 (23.9 +/- 5.7 and 11.6 +/- 4.3; P < .01). After recirculation for 7 days, all gerbils in the S group were found to have neuronal death in the hippocampus, while those in the T group did not. CONCLUSIONS: The present study indicated that mild ischemic stress can induce improvement in oxygen metabolism during subsequent ischemia, which might be causally related to the phenomenon known as "ischemic tolerance," in which a protective effect toward ischemic/postischemic injury is induced by earlier mild ischemic pretreatment.  相似文献
