Back and forth between continuous and discrete for the working computer scientist

This paper gives a perfect, ideal, discretization of continuous notions. This is a very convenient frame to treat continuous problems or theories with the help of a computer. This is illustrated by the conversion of algorithms using real numbers into algorithms using integers only and the founding of discrete geometry.     

Engineered Neutral Phosphorous Dendrimers Protect Mouse Cortical Neurons and Brain Organoids from Excitotoxic Death

Nanoparticles are playing an increasing role in biomedical applications. Excitotoxicity plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Glutamate ionotropic receptors, mainly those activated by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), play a key role in excitotoxic death by increasing intraneuronal calcium levels; triggering mitochondrial potential collapse; increasing free radicals; activating caspases 3, 9, and 12; and inducing endoplasmic reticulum stress. Neutral phosphorous dendrimers, acting intracellularly, have neuroprotective actions by interfering with NMDA-mediated excitotoxic mechanisms in rat cortical neurons. In addition, phosphorous dendrimers can access neurons inside human brain organoids, complex tridimensional structures that replicate a significant number of properties of the human brain, to interfere with NMDA-induced mechanisms of neuronal death. Phosphorous dendrimers are one of the few nanoparticles able to gain access to the inside of neurons, both in primary cultures and in brain organoids, and to exert pharmacological actions by themselves.     

Formation of the Perovskite Phase in the PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3─PbTiO3 System

The reaction sequences during calcination of oxide mixtures were studied for the PbMg_1/3Nb_2/3O₃─PbTiO₃ (PMN-PT) system. The effect of reactivity and composition of the starting mixtures was investigated. In the present study, a B-site-deficient, cubic pyrochlore phase in the PbO-Nb₂O₅ system was formed at 500°C. The perovskite phase of PMN was formed at 7007deg;C through the diffusion of MgO into the pyrochlore phase. The lattice parameter of the pyrochlore phase decreased as this transformation to perovskite progressed.     

Contribution to DEMO reactor RH maintenance assessment

The scope of this paper is a preliminary assessment of the maintenance scheme in support of the European study for the next generation of fusion reactor: DEMO. Despite other fusion machine requiring remote handling maintenance operations, DEMO is supposed to work under steady state operational conditions. Therefore, requirement on the maintenance scheme is stronger. To target a good availability of the machine along machine operation plan, it is necessary to draw an adequate maintenance scheme. Indeed, due to the high fluxes generated by the plasma in the vacuum vessel, the first wall lifetime is limited, so the frequent replacement is necessary. On current fusion experimental machine, as first wall load conditions are less severe, DEMO condition implies high level of requirement on maintenance time. During DEMO lifetime, several full first wall replacements are expected. To provide access to the vacuum vessel machine for first wall removal, preparatory work is required to set the machine to adequate maintenance conditions and to open the machine properly, the same situation at the end of the maintenance period. Shutdown duration for first wall replacement should be as short as possible to reach the availability target of the machine. From this statement, the maintenance duration should not exceed 20% of the total lifetime of the reactor operation. First wall segmentation (i.e. total number of component to replace) has a high impact onto the replacement time. Considering the number of feasible designs for the first wall segmentation, we concentrate remote handling concept assessments one type of segmentation, the one minimizing the numbers of modules to replace [4], [5], [6]. Assumption on Divertor segmentation for these DEMO studies have similarities with Divertor ITER design; therefore ITER design output is relevant [1], [2]. We assume divertor removal performed in shadow time, while removing the other first wall modules.     

Study of ITER equatorial port plug handling system and vacuum sealing interface

In the field of the ITER port plug engineering and integration task, CEA has contributed to define proposals concerning the port plugs vacuum sealing interface with the vessel flange and the equatorial plug handling.The 2001 baseline vacuum flange sealing consisted of TIG welding of a 316L strip plate on to U shapes. This arrangement presented some issues like welding access, implementation of tools, lip consumption, complex local leak test, continuous leak checking. Therefore, an alternate sealing solution based on the use of metallic gaskets is proposed. The different technical aspects are discussed to explain how this design can simplify the maintenance and deal with safety and vacuum requirements.The design of the mechanical attachment and vacuum sealing of the plug has constantly evolved, but the associated remote handling equipment was not systematically reviewed. An update of the cask and maintenance procedure was studied in order to design it in accordance with the last generic plug flange design. This includes a concept of a gripping system that uses the plug flange bolting area and, to help the remote handling process, a cantilever assisting system is suggested to increase the reliability of the transfer operation between vacuum vessel and cask.     

Immunocytochemical localisation of para-coumaric acid and feruloyl-arabinose in the cell walls of maize stem

Two phenolic compounds, p-coumaric acid and feruloyl-arabinose, were localised by immunocytochemistry in the cell walls of the apical internode of two lines of maize (Co125 and W401) of different digestibility. The compounds were detected at two stages of cell maturity in the lignified tissues (sclerenchyma, fibres and xylem) and in the medullary parenchyma, which, in the samples studied, was not lignified. p-Coumaric acid is a phenolic acid associated with lignins, which confer resistance on plant cell walls to microbial degradation in the rumen. Feruloyl-arabinose is a compound associated with xylans, the principal hemicelluloses in Gramineae, which are potentially degradable. Labelling of p-coumaric acid decreased in both maize lines with cell age and as the cell walls became lignified. The mass of lignin deposited in the cell walls masked p-coumaric acid, thereby making it less accessible to the antibodies. There was an inverse relationship in the labelling of p-coumaric acid and feruloyl-arabinose. Feruloyl-arabinose was more heavily labelled as the plant cell walls matured in all the lignified tissues of both maize lines and in the parenchyma of the less digestible line. All tissues except the parenchyma were more heavily labelled with both sera in Co125, the more digestible line. © 1998 Society of Chemical Industry.     

Syntheses and characterizations of new copolymers of vinylidene cyanide with para substituted α acetoxystyrenes

Summary Vinylidene cyanide has been copolymerized in solution by radical reaction with equal initial mole fraction of para substituted acetoxystyrenes. The copolymers have been characterized by means of DSC, TGA and GPC. These products are stable up to 220° and have no visible glass transition temperature. The microstructure of these new copolymers has been studied by ¹³CNMR; they have an alternating structure and monomers units are arranged in head-to-tail placements.     

2-Methylthiazolidine and 4-ethylguaiacol,male sex pheromone components of the cockroachNauphoeta cinerea (dictyoptera,blaberidae): A reinvestigation

InNauphoeta cinerea, male calling behavior is associated with sex pheromone release by the sternal glands. The male pheromone that attracts females from a distance is a mixture of 2-methylthiazolidine and 4-ethylguaiacol. It is active at very low concentrations, 0.05 and 0.01 ng, respectively. Two other compounds, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone and 2-methyl-2thiazoline, act at close range, keeping the female in the vicinity of the male. The function of the volatile pheromone and those of previously described contact pheromones are discussed in regard to their possible involvement in the establishment of male dominant-subordinate relationships.     

Sol–Gel Processing and Microwave Characteristics of Ba(Mg⅓Ta⅔)O3 Dielectrics

The sol–gel method has been developed for the preparation of pure Ba(Mg_1/3Ta_2/3)O₃ ceramics. This involves the reaction of the heterometallic alkoxide Ta₂Mg(OEt)₁₂ with hydrated barium hydroxide Ba(OH)₂·8H₂O. Complete crystallization of the sol–gel-derived powder is achieved at 600°C, leading to a cubic perovskite type phase. After sintering at 1400°C (2–5 h), a trigonal cell arises from Mg–Ta ordering (the degree of order is greater than 0.9), and about 98.5% of the theoretical density is obtained. Preliminary microwave dielectric measurements show that the dielectric constant and the unloaded Q _u of the ceramics are 24.2 and 6750, respectively, at 7.7 GHz.     

Aging of HDPE Pipes Exposed to Diesel Lubricant

The effects caused upon the physicochemical behavior of high-density polyethylene pipes by exposure to a diesel lubricant were investigated, as a function of time and temperature, by thermogravimetric and gravimetric analysis and by FT-IR. The gravimetric data were satisfactorily described using Fick's law. The fitting of the experimental points showed that diesel, which can be regarded as a model fluid to analyze the effects caused by aromatic unities present in oil derivatives, has a high diffusion rate into HDPE. The FT-IR results showed that no main structural modifications have occurred after exposure, besides solubilization of low molecular weight units. From the analysis performed, physical aging was identified as the aging process occurring when the HDPE pipes came in contact with diesel lubricant.
