Trauma, depression, and comorbid PTSD/depression in a community sample of Latina immigrants.

Trauma exposure is frequently overlooked as a risk factor for psychiatric morbidity among studies with Latinos. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among trauma history, immigration-related factors, and mental health status among Latina immigrants. The current study used baseline data from a randomized clinical trial for the treatment of depression of 64 women with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and depression, 69 with depression-only, and 61 with no Axis I mental disorder. Sixty-four percent of the sample was Central American and 75% reported trauma exposure. Multinomial logit analysis suggested fewer years in the United States was associated with worse mental health status. Having a nonmarried marital status was also associated with worse mental health. Reporting four or more types of traumatic events was associated with an increase in the probability of comorbidity. A case of depression: Introducing David.

A brief overview of the client, David, is presented. David participated in a short-term emotion-focused therapy for the treatment of depression. In this paper the client’s presenting problems and history are described to provide a context for the brief excerpt that follows. The excerpt is taken from his first session of psychotherapy and was used by the four different therapists to develop a case formulation illuminating their specific orientation so that these could be contrasted and compared. Head Start and urban children's school readiness: A birth cohort study in 18 cities.

We used longitudinal data from a birth cohort study, the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, to investigate the links between Head Start and school readiness in a large and diverse sample of urban children at age 5 (N = 2,803; 18 cities). We found that Head Start attendance was associated with enhanced cognitive ability and social competence and reduced attention problems but not reduced internalizing or externalizing behavior problems. These findings were robust to model specifications (including models with city-fixed effects and propensity-scoring matching). Furthermore, the effects of Head Start varied by the reference group. Head Start was associated with improved cognitive development when compared with parental care or other nonparental care, as well as improved social competence (compared with parental care) and reduced attention problems (compared with other nonparental care). In contrast, compared with attendance at pre-kindergarten or other center-based care, Head Start attendance was not associated with cognitive gains but with improved social competence and reduced attention and externalizing behavior problems (compared with attendance at other center-based care). Effect of the long-term intake of an egg white hydrolysate on the oxidative status and blood lipid profile of spontaneously hypertensive rats

This paper examines the effects of the long-term consumption of egg white hydrolysed with pepsin (hEW) on the antioxidant status and lipid profile of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The antioxidant capacity was measured by the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and the oxidative status by the malon-dialdehyde (MDA) assay. The lipid profile was analysed spectrophotometrically. The radical-scavenging capacity of the plasma was increased and the MDA concentration in the aorta was decreased in the SHR treated with 0.5 g/kg/day of hEW. Our findings indicate that hEW played an important role in antioxidative defence of SHR and exerted a beneficial effect on the lipid profile, lowering triglycerides and total cholesterol without changing HDL levels. Therefore, hEW may be useful to prevent or reverse abnormalities associated with the metabolic syndrome and its complications, such as hypertension, oxidative stress and hyperlipidemia.     

Depression in adolescence.

Adolescence is an important developmental period for understanding the nature, course, and treatment of depression. Recent research concerned with depressive mood, syndromes, and disorders during adolescence is reviewed, including investigations of the prevalence, course, risk factors, and prevention and treatment programs for each of these 3 levels of depressive phenomena in adolescence. A broad biopsychosocial perspective on adolescent depression is recommended, and possible directions for future integrative research are proposed. Tacticity dependence of excimer formation in polystyrene solutions

Summary This work deals with the excimer formation in dilute solution for a series of polystyrenes of various tacticity prepared by epimerization of an initial isotactic sample. The main result is that the relative excimer yield remains equal to that obtained for iPS if the percentage of isotactic dyads is higher than 65%.The range of energy migration could be roughly approximated to 6 chromophores.     

Sequence of a 7·8 kb segment on the left arm of yeast chromosome XI reveals four open reading frames,including the CAP1 gene,an intron-containing gene and a gene encoding a homolog to the mammalian UOG-1 gene

We report here the DNA sequence of a segment of chromosome XI of Saccharomyces cerevisiae extending over 7·8 kb. The segment contains four long open reading frames, YKL150, YKL153, YKL155 and YKL156, YKL155 corresponds to the CAP1 gene. YKL153 contains an intron and shows an extremely biased codon usage suggestive of a highly expressed protein. YKL156 is a homolog to UOG-1, an open reading frame associated with the cDNA clone of the mammalian growth/differentiation factor 1. YKL150 reveals common motifs to both the RNA polymerase II elongation factor of Drosophila melanogaster and to the yeast PPR2 gene product.     

Type and amount of dietary fat affect relative concentration of cholesterol in blood and other tissues of calves

Sixteen male Holstein calves consumed by nipple a reconstituted milk containing nonfat dry milk and either soybean oil or tallow for 24 weeks. Calves fed milk in this manner (with no dry feed) are functionally nonruminants because the milk bypasses the ruminoreticulum. The fat in these diets contributed about 30% of total dietary calories. The calves consuming soybean oil milk had significantly greater amounts of cholesterol in blood plasma and adipose tissue than did the calves consuming tallow milk.     

Thermal variation of the apparent specific volume of polystyrenes in solution

A new approach to the polymer interactions inside and outside the coil is discussed and we explain the experimental variation of the apparent specific volume of polystyrene in good and in θ-solvents. In cyclohexane we define two very different regions above and below the θ-point. For the region above the θ point we calculate the thermal dilation coefficient, $\text{}\text{?}$ga, subtracting the intramolecular segment density effect. We relate $\text{}\text{?}$ga to the external degrees of freedom of the chain starting from the Prigogine theory of polymer solutions. We first considered the intramolecular segment interactions of the coil in the dilute solution.
