This study examines the effect of changing the floor from a 2-mm homogenous vinyl floor to a 4-mm heterogeneous vinyl floor (1.5-mm wear layer and 2.5-mm foam layer) on musculoskeletal symptoms in the lower extremities and low back among nursing assistants in a geriatric care centre. A pre-post design with a reference group consisting of nursing assistants from a similar geriatric care centre was used. Follow-up measurements were carried out 12 and 24 months after the intervention by means of questionnaires. At the 1-year follow-up, the pain intensity score in the feet of the intervention group had decreased compared with the baseline value and remained statistically significant at the 2-year follow-up. The decrease in pain intensity score of the feet in the intervention group was statistically significantly different from the reference group, both after 1 and 2 years. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: The results show the importance of flooring in the workplace with regard to reducing musculoskeletal symptoms. Appropriate flooring is especially important in the female-dominated health care sector, where workers must stand or walk for long periods.  相似文献

With the introduction of single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) it has become possible to directly access the interactions of various molecular systems. A bottleneck in conventional SMFS is collecting the large amount of data required for statistically meaningful analysis. Currently, atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based SMFS requires the user to tediously 'fish' for single molecules. In addition, most experimental and environmental conditions must be manually adjusted. Here, we developed a fully automated single-molecule force spectroscope. The instrument is able to perform SMFS while monitoring and regulating experimental conditions such as buffer composition and temperature. Cantilever alignment and calibration can also be automatically performed during experiments. This, combined with in-line data analysis, enables the instrument, once set up, to perform complete SMFS experiments autonomously.  相似文献

Vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) exhibit different types of calcium dynamics. Static vascular tone is associated with unsynchronized calcium waves and the developed force depends on the number of recruited cells. Global calcium transients synchronized among a large number of cells cause rhythmic development of force known as vasomotion. We present experimental data showing a considerable heterogeneity in cellular calcium dynamics in the vascular wall. In stimulated vessels, some SMCs remain quiescent, whereas others display waves of variable frequency. At the onset of vasomotion, all SMCs are enrolled into synchronized oscillation.Simulations of coupled SMCs show that the experimentally observed cellular recruitment, the presence of quiescent cells and the variation in oscillation frequency may arise if the cell population is phenotypically heterogeneous. In this case, quiescent cells can be entrained at the onset of vasomotion by the collective driving force from the synchronized oscillations in the membrane potential of the surrounding cells. Partial synchronization arises with an increase in the concentration of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, but in a heterogeneous cell population complete synchronization also requires a high-conductance pathway that provides strong coupling between the cells.  相似文献

In this study a chromatographic approach for fluorescence reduction in liquid Raman analysis has been evaluated. The idea behind the approach is to apply a chromatographic separation step prior to Raman analysis in order to separate fluorescing compounds from other components of interest, thus facilitating better quantitative and qualitative analysis of the latter components. A real-time liquid-core Raman waveguide detector designed for chromatographic applications was used in the study, thus providing real-time chemical pretreatment of liquid samples for Raman analysis. Twenty aqueous mixtures of additives frequently found in beverages were analyzed, and for comparative purposes the mixtures were also analyzed in the Raman waveguide detector without chromatographic separation and with a conventional immersion probe. Both qualitatively and quantitatively satisfying results were obtained using the chromatographic Raman approach, and the technique provided possibilities for quantitative and qualitative assessments superior to the two other instrumental setups. The technique may provide additional benefits through sensitivity enhancements, and the approach is simple, inexpensive, and easy to implement in the average applied Raman laboratory. The analysis of various chemical systems and factors such as system stability over time need further evaluation in order to confirm the general applicability of the approach.  相似文献

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) sensors suffer from spatial misregistration, an artifact that prevents the accurate acquisition of the spectra. Physical considerations let us assume that the influence of the spatial misregistration on the acquired data depends both on the wavelength and on the across-track position. A scene-based method, based on edge detection, is therefore proposed. Such a procedure measures the variation on the spatial location of an edge between its various monochromatic projections, giving an estimation for spatial misregistration, and also allowing identification of misalignments. The method has been applied to several hyperspectral sensors, either prism, or grating-based designs. The results confirm the dependence assumptions on lambda and theta, spectral wavelength and across-track pixel, respectively. Suggestions are also given to correct for spatial misregistration.  相似文献

A surface crack penetrating the interface between a presstressd hard coating and a substrate is analysed in terms of linear fracture mechanics in order to assess the fatigue properties of such a composite. We present a designed cyclic DNA motif that consists of six DNA double helices that are connected to each other at two crossover sites. DNA double helices with 10.5 nucleotide pairs per turn facilitate the programming of DNA double crossover molecules to form hexagonally symmetric arrangements when the crossover points are separated by seven or fourteen nucleotide pairs. We demonstrate by atomic force microscopy well-formed arrays of hexagonal six-helix bundle motifs both in 1D and in 2D.  相似文献

Our main aim is to provide guidelines and practical help for the design of appropriate representations and operators for evolutionary algorithms (EAs). For this purpose, we propose techniques to obtain a better understanding of various effects in the interplay of the representation and the operators. We study six different representations and associated variation operators in the context of a steady-state evolutionary algorithm for the multidimensional knapsack problem. Four of them are indirect decoder-based techniques, and two are direct encodings combined with different initialization, repair, and local improvement strategies. The complex decoders and the local improvement and repair strategies make it practically impossible to completely analyze such EAs in a fully theoretical way. After comparing the general performance of the chosen EA variants for the multidimensional knapsack problem on two benchmark suites, we present a hands-on approach for empirically analyzing important aspects of initialization, mutation, and crossover in an isolated fashion. Static, inexpensive measurements based on randomly created solutions are performed in order to quantify and visualize specific properties with respect to heuristic bias, locality, and heritability. These tests shed light onto the complex behavior of such EAs and point out reasons for good or bad performance. In addition, the proposed measures are also examined during actual EA runs, which gives further insight into dynamic aspects of evolutionary search and verifies the validity of the isolated static measurements. All measurements are described in a general way, allowing for an easy adaption to other representations and problems.  相似文献
