The primary byproduct of current oil shale oil extraction processes is semicoke. Its landfill deposition presents a potential threat to the environment and represents a waste of a potentially useable byproduct. Here we examine the sorptive characteristics of oil shale semicoke. Oil shale samples from Estonia, China and the United States were pyrolyzed at 500 and 1000 °C and their products analyzed for organic char content, surface area and porosity. Pyrolysis of the oil shales at temperatures of 500-1000 °C yields semicokes with organic char contents from 1.7% to 17.5% and BET surface areas of 4.4-57 m2 g−1, corresponding to 100-550 m2 g−1 of organic char. For comparison, the BET surface areas of class F coal fly ashes (combustion byproducts of bituminous coals) typically range from 2 to 5 m2 g−1, corresponding to 30-60 m2 g−1 of carbon while class C fly ash (from low rank coals) have carbon BET surface areas comparable to oil shale semicoke organic char surface areas.  相似文献

Recent advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS have led to medical improvements for persons living with the virus. As a result, many now think of HIV infection as a chronic rather than a terminal illness. Along with this shift comes the understanding that individuals now live with treatments that require long-term adherence to regimens that are often complex, time consuming, and not without deleterious side effects. The greater life expectancy, nature of new treatments and their dependence on regimented adherence has recently led to the investigation of psychosocial variables loosely categorized as quality of life (QOL). Although there has been relatively little research on the topic in relation to new HIV therapies, what is known is that QOL--with all of its complications and dimensions--appears to play an essential role in HIV and HIV treatment. Moreover, QOL would seem to be a most worthwhile component to further investigations of improved therapies and betterment for the lives of infected individuals. The following literature review discusses these issues, highlights key research findings, and provides directions for further research. The integration of metallic nanostructures with semiconductors is important for a variety of technological applications. Through an efficient galvanic displacement reaction on germanium, complex silver nanostructures form spontaneously in aqueous conditions at room temperature. The structures, termed nano-inukshuks, are based on stacks of hexagonal metallic structures that grow, initially, parallel to the surface normal of the germanium. TEM, SEM, XPS, XRD, and EDS indicate that the structures are crystalline silver and, based on open cell potential studies, that their nucleation takes place in the first 100 s, followed by growth of the silver structures, most likely through Volmer-Weber growth.  相似文献

Herein we describe an inhibition study of the sialyl Lewis x (sLe(x)) expression on a human monocytic cell line (U937), using a series of peracetylated N-Acetyllactosamine (LacNAc) analogues with variation at the aglycon moiety. It was found that the extent of inhibition was related to the hydrophobicity and structure of the aglycon. In general, peracetylated LacNAc analogues with a naphthyl or biphenyl aglycon (3, 4, 6, and 7) were better in suppression of sLe(x) expression than a benzyl derivative (2). Steady-state kinetic experiments with human alpha-1,3-fucosyltransferases IV and VI (FucT IV and VI, EC 2.4.1.65) revealed that the deacetylated LacNAc-aglycons with naphthyl (18, 19, and 20) or biphenyl (17) moieties exhibited higher affinity to the fucosyltransferases than aglycon moieties with smaller hydrophobic groups (14, 15, and 16). These results are in agreement with the findings of the U937 cell-based experiments, and suggest that the higher enzyme affinity LacNAc-aglycons make better acceptor decoys and, hence, the observed differences in LacNAc-aglycon inhihitory effects on sLe(x) expression.  相似文献

Distributed sensing systems for studying scientific phenomena are critical applications of information technologies. By embedding computational intelligence in the environment of study, sensing systems allow researchers to study phenomena at spatial and temporal scales that were previously impossible to achieve. We present an ethnographic study of field research practices among researchers in the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS), a National Science Foundation Science & Technology Center devoted to developing wireless sensing systems for scientific and social applications. Using the concepts of boundary objects and trading zones, we trace the processes of collaborative research around sensor technology development and adoption within CENS. Over the 10-year lifespan of CENS, sensor technologies, sensor data, field research methods, and statistical expertise each emerged as boundary objects that were understood differently by the science and technology partners. We illustrate how sensing technologies were incompatible with field-based environmental research until researchers “unearthed” their infrastructures, explicitly reintroducing human skill and expertise into the data collection process and developing new collaborative languages that emphasized building dynamic sensing systems that addressed human needs. In collaborating around a dynamic sensing model, the sensing systems became embedded not in the environment of study, but in the practices of the scientists.  相似文献

To efficiently design new adsorption systems, industrial scale fixed beds are often scaled down to bench-top experiments and/or modeled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). While there has been considerable work exploring adsorption of volatile organics onto activated carbon fixed beds in the literature, this article attempts to reckon with the high variability of adsorption capacities observed at small scales and improve small-scale experiments for industrial scale reactor design. This study integrates experimental results with CFD simulations, which can explicitly model system heterogeneities and their influence on adsorption by resolving local packing densities and flow paths. Activated carbon physical properties were determined through surface area analysis, proximate analysis, and toluene adsorption (measured via mass spectroscopy). Variability in the small-scale systems was not attributed to surface area or carbon content, as is often stated, but instead was due to local packing density variations and the heterogeneity of particle size distributions.  相似文献

Dermatomed porcine skin was fixed to a flexing device and topically dosed with 33.5 mg.mL-1 of an aqueous solution of a fullerene-substituted phenylalanine (Baa) derivative of a nuclear localization peptide sequence (Baa-Lys(FITC)-NLS). Skin was flexed for 60 or 90 min or left unflexed (control). Confocal microscopy depicted dermal penetration of the nanoparticles at 8 h in skin flexed for 60 and 90 min, whereas Baa-Lys(FITC)-NLS did not penetrate into the dermis of unflexed skin until 24 h. TEM analysis revealed fullerene-peptide localization within the intercellular spaces of the stratum granulosum.  相似文献

In order to harness the potential of block copolymers to produce nanoscale structures that can be integrated with existing silicon-based technologies, there is a need for compatible chemistries. Block copolymer nanostructures can form a wide variety of two-dimensional patterns, and can be controlled to present long-range order. Here we use the acid-responsive nature of self-assembled monolayers of aligned, horizontal block copolymer cylinders for metal loading with simple aqueous solutions of anionic metal complexes, followed by brief plasma treatment to simultaneously remove the block copolymer and produce metallic nanostructures. Aligned lines of metal with widths on the order of 10 nm and less are efficiently produced by means of this approach on Si(100) interfaces. The method is highly versatile because the chemistry to manipulate nanowire composition, structure and choice of semiconductor is under the control of the user.  相似文献

In this study, the authors examined the interrelations among family-of-origin maltreatment variables, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, social information processing deficits, and male-to-female psychological and physical intimate relationship abuse perpetration in adulthood among a community sample of 164 men and their partners. In bivariate analyses, higher family-of-origin childhood parental rejection was associated with the perpetration of psychological and physical abuse in adulthood, and childhood exposure to interparental violence was also associated with adult psychological abuse perpetration. Structural equation modeling analyses indicated that when childhood variables and other study variables were considered together, only childhood parental rejection was associated with the abuse perpetration outcomes, and these effects were indirect through PTSD symptoms and social information processing deficits. Results indicate a need for further investigation into the mechanisms accounting for the impact of early maltreatment on the development of abusive intimate relationship behavior.
