The phases and stability of ferric iron products formed early during neutralization of acid mine drainage waters remain largely unknown. In this work, we used in situ and time-resolved quick-scanning X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to study products formed between 4 min and 1 h after ferric iron sulfate solutions were partially neutralized by addition of NaHCO(3) ([HCO(3)(-)]/[Fe(3+)] < 3). When [HCO(3)(-)]/[Fe(3+)] = 0.5 and 0.6 (initial pH ~ 2.1 and 2.2, respectively), the only large species formed were sulfate-complexed ferrihydrite-like molecular clusters that were stable throughout the duration of the experiment. When [HCO(3)(-)]/[Fe(3+)] = 1 (initial pH ~ 2.5), ferrihydrite-like molecular clusters formed initially, but most later converted to schwertmannite. In contrast, when [HCO(3)(-)]/[Fe(3+)] = 2 (initial pH ~ 2.7), schwertmannite and larger ferrihydrite particles formed immediately upon neutralization. However, the ferrihydrite particles subsequently converted to schwertmannite. The schwertmannite particles formed under both conditions aggregated extensively with increasing time. This work provides new insight into the formation, stability and reactivity of some early products that may form during the neutralization of natural acid mine drainage.  相似文献

Notes that an influential theory of visually guided action proposes that (1) conscious perception of target displacement disrupts on-line action and (2) small target perturbations are inconsequential, provided the participant is unaware of them. This study examined these claims in a study of 13 Ss' rapid aiming movements to targets. Novel features included on-line verbal reports of target displacement, and the factorial combination of small vs large displacements occurring near peak saccadic velocity or 100 ms later. Results show that although awareness of target displacement had no effect on movement kinematics, even small target displacements near peak saccadic velocity affected kinematic measures. These results support both a strong view of visual stream separation in the on-line control of action and richer spatial coding by unconscious processes than has previously been acknowledged. There is a paucity of information regarding Australian nurses' sleep and fatigue levels, and whether they result in impairment. Forty-one Australian hospital nurses completed daily logbooks for one month recording work hours, sleep, sleepiness, stress, errors, near errors and observed errors (made by others). Nurses reported exhaustion, stress and struggling to remain (STR) awake at work during one in three shifts. Sleep was significantly reduced on workdays in general, and workdays when an error was reported relative to days off. The primary predictor of error was STR, followed by stress. The primary predictor of extreme drowsiness during the commute was also STR awake, followed by exhaustion, and consecutive shifts. In turn, STR awake was predicted by exhaustion, prior sleep and shift length. Findings highlight the need for further attention to these issues to optimise the safety of nurses and patients in our hospitals, and the community at large on our roads.  相似文献

The authors investigated processing of threat words in motor vehicle accident survivors using a modified Stroop procedure. Three samples were included: 28 participants with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pain, 26 participants with pain without PTSD, and 21 participants without pain or any psychiatric conditions. Four word categories were used: (a) accident words, (b) pain words, (c) positive words, and (d) neutral words. This study examined whether processing biases would occur to accident words only in participants with PTSD or if these biases would also be noted in the No PTSD/Pain sample. Additionally, this study examined whether processing biases would be noted to pain words in the 2 pain samples, irrespective of PTSD. Overall, color naming was significantly slower in the PTSD/Pain group in comparison with the other groups. As well, the PTSD/Pain sample showed significant response delays to both accident and pain-related words, whereas patients with No PTSD/Pain showed delays to pain stimuli only. The principal objective of this study was to determine if Campylobacter jejuni genotyping methods based upon resolution optimised sets of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and binary genetic markers were capable of identifying epidemiologically linked clusters of chicken-derived isolates. Eighty-eight C. jejuni isolates of known flaA RFLP type were included in the study. They encompassed three groups of ten isolates that were obtained at the same time and place and possessed the same flaA type. These were regarded as being epidemiologically linked. Twenty-six unlinked C. jejuni flaA type I isolates were included to test the ability of SNP and binary typing to resolve isolates that were not resolved by flaA RFLP. The remaining isolates were of different flaA types. All isolates were typed by real-time PCR interrogation of the resolution optimised sets of SNPs and binary markers. According to each typing method, the three epidemiologically linked clusters were three different clones that were well resolved from the other isolates. The 26 unlinked C. jejuni flaA type I isolates were resolved into 14 SNP-binary types, indicating that flaA typing can be unreliable for revealing epidemiological linkage. Comparison of the data with data from a fully typed set of isolates associated with human infection revealed that abundant lineages in the chicken isolates that were also found in the human isolates belonged to clonal complex (CC) -21 and CC-353, with the usually rare C-353 member ST-524 being especially abundant in the chicken collection. The chicken isolates selected to be diverse according to flaA were also diverse according to SNP and binary typing. It was observed that CC-48 was absent in the chicken isolates, despite being very common in Australian human infection isolates, indicating that this may be a major cause of human disease that is not chicken associated.  相似文献

Any approach to qualification of advanced technologies during product development must include an assessment of variation expected in product life over the life cycle. However, testing product design options in development, to approach an optimal design is costly and time consuming. Hence, simulation of product life distributions for virtual qualification can be a valuable tool to evaluate and qualify design options. This paper presents a physics of failure-based approach to virtual qualification of advanced area array assemblies against solder fatigue failure. The approach applies Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate solder joint fatigue life distributions, given material property variations and manufacturing capabilities. Preliminary results using the simple Engelmaier model as the basis of simulations are presented. Simulation results are compared to data accumulated from two test environments and two ball grid array product types. The results reveal some of the limitations of the Engelmaier model as a basis for simulation. They also show the potential of this approach to virtual qualification for design and manufacturing capability assessment in development.  相似文献

Inverted organic photovoltaic cells have been fabricated based on vertical C(60) nanocolumns filled with spin-coated poly[3-(4-carboxybutyl)thiophene-2,5-diyl] (P3CBT). These C(60) nanocolumns were prepared via glancing angle deposition (GLAD), an efficient synthetic approach that controls the morphology of the resulting film, including intercolumn spacing, nanostructure shapes, and overall film thickness, among others. Intercolumn spacing was tuned to better match the expected P3CBT exciton diffusion length while simultaneously increasing heterointerface area. Due to observed in situ dissolution of the C(60) nanocolumns in solvents typically used to spin-coat polythiophene-based polymers (i.e., chloroform and chlorobenzene), the carboxylic acid-substituted polythiophene, P3CBT, was used as it is soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a solvent that did not affect the structure of the GLAD-produced C(60) nanostructures. Preservation of the C(60) nanocolumnar structure in the presence of DMSO, with and without P3CBT, was verified by absorbance spectroscopy and SEM imaging. Incorporating these nanostructured C(60)/P3CBT films into photovoltaic devices on indium tin oxide (ITO) showed that the engineered nanomorphology yielded a 5-fold increase in short-circuit current and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) increase from (0.2 ± 0.03)% to (0.8 ± 0.2)% when compared to a planar device. When compared to a standard bulk heterojunction (BHJ) device based upon the same materials, the C(60)-GLAD device outperformed fully solution-processed bulk heterojunctions, which were observed to have PCEs of (0.49 ± 0.03)%.  相似文献

Stimulated by an acetate-amendment field experiment conducted in 2007, anaerobic microbial populations in the aquifer at the Rifle Integrated Field Research Challenge site in Colorado reduced mobile U(VI) to insoluble U(IV). During this experiment, planktonic biomass was sampled at various time points to quantitatively evaluate proteomes. In 2008, an acetate-amended field experiment was again conducted in a similar manner to the 2007 experiment. As there was no comprehensive metagenome sequence available for use in proteomics analysis, we systematically evaluated 12 different organism genome sequences to generate sets of aggregate genomes, or "pseudo-metagenomes", for supplying relative quantitative peptide and protein identifications. Proteomics results support previous observations of the dominance of Geobacteraceae during biostimulation using acetate as sole electron donor, and revealed a shift from an early stage of iron reduction to a late stage of iron reduction. Additionally, a shift from iron reduction to sulfate reduction was indicated by changes in the contribution of proteome information contributed by different organism genome sequences within the aggregate set. In addition, the comparison of proteome measurements made between the 2007 field experiment and 2008 field experiment revealed differences in proteome profiles. These differences may be the result of alterations in abundance and population structure within the planktonic biomass samples collected for analysis.  相似文献
