Sex Pheromone of Queens of the Slave-Making Ant, Polyergus breviceps

The sex attractant pheromone produced in mandibular glands of queens of the slave-making ant Polyergus breviceps has been identified as a blend of methyl 6-methylsalicylate and 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanol. In field trials, each compound alone was completely unattractive to males, whereas blends of the two compounds attracted hundreds of males within a couple of hours.

Experimental evidences of distinct heat transfer regimes in pulsating heat pipes (PHP)

Various experiments were conducted on two full-size pulsating heat pipes (PHP) which differed from their diameter, number of turns, and working fluid. The analysis of the experimental results showed two kind of operating curves (overall thermal resistance vs. heat rate): for low heat fluxes, the curve is irregular and the PHP performance is sensitive to the orientation. For high heat fluxes, the operating curve is smooth and independent from the orientation. To contribute to the analysis of these results, experiments were conducted at the scale of a single branch of a PHP. An oscillating motion was imposed to a single liquid plug surrounded by two vapour slugs in a capillary tube and high speed visualizations were performed. The test section was either adiabatic or heated. The adiabatic experiments brought to the fore the importance of dynamic contact angles in the flow and the dissymmetry between the advancing and receding contact angle. The non-adiabatic experiments showed that at low flux, the flow is disturbed by bubble nucleation, while at high heat flux, the main heat transfer mechanism is thin film evaporation, with a completely different thermal and hydrodynamic behaviour.     

The Friction Reducing Properties of Molybdenum Dialkyldithiocarbamate Additives: Part II - Durability of Friction Reducing Capability

Material characterization and wear evaluation of the original and replacement pistons and cylinder liners from a Tiger 131 are reported. The original piston and cylinder liner were operative in the Tiger engine during WWII. The replacement piston and cylinder liner were used as substitutes and were obtained after failure in 2 h of operation in the actual engine. Material characterization revealed that the original piston was aluminum silicon hypereutectic alloy approximately matching the specification of RSA-419 AE, with a silicon content of 19.92 wt%. The replacement piston was aluminum copper alloy with a low silicon content of 0.73 wt%, approximately satisfying specifications of Al 2031 and Al 2618-T6. Scuffing, material removal, and ploughing were observed in the replacement piston and cylinder liner. These failures were attributed to inadequate piston material and design. The replacement piston average surface roughness was 9.09 μm and for the replacement cylinder liner it was 5.78 μm. Characterization results showed that both the original and replacement cylinder liners consisted of mostly iron, which is indicative of cast iron, a common material for this application.
