The public will probably play a major role in determining future programs to combat air pollution. Thus, a major task in any community is to stimulate public acceptance of the responsibility to take some kind of action. This study was conducted to investigate the attitudes of a metropolitan population toward air pollution and to attempt to measure in a crude way that public's willingness to take action.Data were collected by personal interview from 562 adult respondents living in Salt Lake City, Utah, which is surrounded by lofty mountains. High pressure areas frequently form an inversion which holds the air on the valley floor. The air quickly becomes polluted when it cannot escape.A health behavior model, formulated by Irwin Rosenstock, was used as a frame of reference in determining how residents perceive the pollution problem and its probable consequences in relation to their health.Willingness to donate money from one's own resources in an effort to reduce the problem was used as a measure of concern. Those most willing to donate money to combat air pollution were residents who perceived air pollution to be a serious problem in this community; who were personally bothered by it; who were concerned for their family's health, and who had confidence that the problem could be eliminated, or at least reduced by our technical expertise. Demographically, they were the more highly educated males working in high status occupations.The findings of this study suggest the potential usefulness of the model in designing community programs to reduce air pollution.This research was supported by a grant from the Air Pollution Control Office, No. 1 RO1 APO1345-01, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.  相似文献

The intercrosslinked networks of unsaturated polyester (UP) toughened epoxy–clay hybrid nanocomposites have been developed. Epoxy resin (DGEBA) was toughened with 5, 10 and 15% (by wt) of unsaturated polyester using benzoyl peroxide as radical initiator and 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane as a curing agent at appropriate conditions. The chemical reaction of unsaturated polyester with the epoxy resin was carried out thermally in presence of benzoyl peroxide-radical initiator and the resulting product was analyzed by FT-IR spectra. Epoxy and unsaturated polyester toughened epoxy systems were further modified with 1, 3 and 5% (by wt) of organophilic montmorillonite (MMT) clay. Clay filled hybrid UP-epoxy matrices, developed in the form of castings were characterized for their thermal and mechanical properties. Thermal behaviour of the matrices was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Mechanical properties were studied as per ASTM standards. Data resulted from mechanical and thermal studies indicated that the introduction of unsaturated polyester into epoxy resin improved the thermal stability and impact strength to an appreciable extent. The impact strength of 3% clay filled epoxy system was increased by 19.2% compared to that of unmodified epoxy resin system. However, the introduction of both UP and organophilic MMT clay into epoxy resin enhanced the values of mechanical properties and thermal stability according to their percentage content. The impact strength of 3% clay filled 10% UP toughened epoxy system was increased by 26.3% compared to that of unmodified epoxy system. The intercalated nanocomposites exhibited higher dynamic modulus (from 3,072 to 3,820 MPa) than unmodified epoxy resin. From the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, it was observed that the presence of d 001 reflections of the organophilic MMT clay in the cured product indicated the development of intercalated clay structure which in turn confirmed the formation of intercalated nanocomposites. The homogeneous morphologies of the UP toughened epoxy and UP toughened epoxy–clay hybrid systems were ascertained from scanning electron microscope (SEM).  相似文献

Thermoplastic elastomers from blends of high‐density polyethylene and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber were prepared by a melt‐blending technique. The blends were dynamically vulcanized using sulfur, peroxide, and mixed curing systems. The peroxide concentration was varied to obtain samples of varying degrees of crosslinking. The peroxide system showed better mechanical properties. The crosslink density determination by the equilibrium swelling method revealed that the enhancement in properties can be correlated to the extent of crosslinking. It is observed that the effect of dynamic vulcanization on the property improvement is much more pronounced in rubber‐rich blends. To study the effect of filler incorporation on mechanical properties, fillers such as carbon black, silica, silane‐treated silica, and cork‐filled samples were prepared. All filled systems, except cork filled, exhibited superior mechanical properties. Scanning electron micrographs of selected fractured surfaces were analyzed to study the failure mechanism of the different compositions. Various theoretical models were applied to correlate the observed mechanical behavior with that of theoretically predicted values. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The coproduction of liquid transportation fuels and C6?C8 aromatics from the thermochemical conversion of biomass and natural gas (BGTL+C6_C8) is investigated in this article. An optimization‐based process synthesis framework incorporating multiple synthesis gas conversion technologies, such as Fischer–Tropsch synthesis or methanol conversion, is described. Production of aromatics can proceed through several technologies, such as naphtha reforming and aromatization of hydrocarbons via a metal‐promoted H‐ZSM‐5 catalyst. This is the first article in the literature to incorporate an aromatics complex for the coproduction of liquid fuels and C6?C8 petrochemicals within a rigorous process synthesis and deterministic global optimization framework. Data obtained from seven lab-scale experiments were used to compare different methods for describing effects of substrate disintegration on methane yield. Statistical evaluation underlines the importance of careful design and precise conduction of experiments. Within continuous experiments conducted as duplicates, an effect 5.65 times (triplicates: 3.07 times) the standard deviation between identically operated digesters can be considered significant. Some tests show significant impacts; however, the results between different test approaches, namely, batch, continuous digestion (measured), and continuous digestion (modeled from batch tests), are inconsistent. This inconsistency hints at a limited transferability from batch results to continuous operation in general and for the effect of disintegration in particular.  相似文献

We previously reported that the trans-18:2 fatty acid trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (t10,c12-CLA) stimulates mammary gland development independent of estrogen and its receptor. Given the negative consequences of dietary trans-fatty acids on various aspects of human health, we sought to establish whether other trans-fatty acids could similarly induce ovary-independent mammary gland growth in mice. Prepubertal BALB/cJ mice were ovariectomized at 21 days of age then were fed diets enriched with cis-9, trans-11 CLA (c9,t11-CLA), or mixtures of trans-18:1 fatty acids supplied by partially hydrogenated sunflower, safflower, or linseed oil. The resultant mammary phenotype was evaluated 3 weeks later and compared to the growth response elicited by t10,c12-CLA, or the defined control diet. Whereas partially hydrogenated safflower oil increased mammary gland weight, none of the partially hydrogenated vegetable oils promoted mammary ductal growth. Similarly, the c9,t11-CLA supplemented diet was without effect on mammary development. Taken together, our data emphasize a unique effect of t10,c12-CLA in stimulating estrogen-independent mammary gland growth manifest as increased mammary ductal area and elongation that was not recapitulated by c9,t11-CLA or the partially hydrogenated vegetable oil diets.  相似文献

Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common primary intraocular malignancy of the eye. It has a high metastatic potential and mainly spreads to the liver. Genetics play a vital role in tumor classification and prognostication of UM metastatic disease. One of the driver genes mutated in metastasized UM is subunit 1 of splicing factor 3b (SF3B1), a component of the spliceosome complex. Recurrent mutations in components of the spliceosome complex are observed in UM and other malignancies, suggesting an important role in tumorigenesis. SF3B1 is the most common mutated spliceosome gene and in UM it is associated with late-onset metastasis. This review summarizes the genetic and epigenetic insights of spliceosome mutations in UM. They form a distinct subgroup of UM and have similarities with other spliceosome mutated malignancies.  相似文献

SiO2/SiC coatings were deposited onto ceramics disks using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The effects of deposition pressure and gas-flow ratio on the refractive index, extinction coefficient, and SiC composition were studied. For the highest studied SiH4 to CH4 gas-flow ratio of 1.5, the refractive index increased by 17% from 2.53 (at the wavelength of 845 nm) to 2.96 (at the wavelength of 400 nm). For the lowest studied SiH4 to CH4 gas-flow ratio of 0.5, the refractive index only increased by 4% from 2.11 (at the wavelength of 845 nm) to 2.20 (at the wavelength of 400 nm). At higher deposition pressures, the variation in refractive index of the SiC coatings was significantly lower showing a slight increase from 1.93 (at a wavelength of 845 nm) to 1.96 at a wavelength of 400 nm. Except for the case of a low SiH4 to CH4 gas-flow ratio of 0.5, for light with wavelengths ≤650 nm, the extinction coefficient of the SiC coatings increased significantly. Light with a wavelength >650 nm had an extinction coefficient near 0 in all cases. After annealing the sample at 400°C for 4 hours, hydrogen-related bonds broke and the stress of the film was reduced from −245 to −71 MPa. By utilizing different thicknesses of SiC, the full standard dental shade guide was matched with the ΔE of each coated disk being less than 3.3 compared to the shade guide.  相似文献

‘Omega‐6 vegetable oils’ are a small but important group of vegetable oils used widely in the food, neutraceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries for their linoleic acid (18:2 n‐6) and more importantly gamma linolenic acid (18:3 n‐6) content. These omega‐6 fatty acids have numerous health benefits recognized worldwide. With linoleic acid being readily available from many dietary sources, one wonders why there is a need to extract the oil from speciality oilseeds, however those that suffer with many of the conditions that omega‐6 fatty acids are said to be beneficial for are frequently advised to take extra supplements of these fatty acids. Due to their wide use as a nutraceutical, omega‐6 fatty acids are in high demand, causing a niche market for extraction of these oils from speciality seeds.  相似文献

Risk of relapse of endometrial cancer (EC) after surgical treatment is 13% and recurrent disease carries a poor prognosis. Research into prognostic indicators is essential to improve EC management and outcome. “Immortality” of most cancer cells is dependent on telomerase, but the role of associated proteins in the endometrium is poorly understood. The Cancer Genome Atlas data highlighted telomere/telomerase associated genes (TTAGs) with prognostic relevance in the endometrium, and a recent in silico study identified a group of TTAGs and proteins as key regulators within a network of dysregulated genes in EC. We characterise relevant telomere/telomerase associated proteins (TTAPs) NOP10, NHP2, NOP56, TERF1, TERF2 and TERF2IP in the endometrium using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC). qPCR data demonstrated altered expression of multiple TTAPs; specifically, increased NOP10 (p = 0.03) and reduced NHP2 (p = 0.01), TERF2 (p = 0.01) and TERF2IP (p < 0.003) in EC relative to post-menopausal endometrium. Notably, we report reduced NHP2 in EC compared to post-menopausal endometrium in qPCR and IHC (p = 0.0001) data; with survival analysis indicating high immunoscore is favourable in EC (p = 0.0006). Our findings indicate a potential prognostic role for TTAPs in EC, particularly NHP2. Further evaluation of the prognostic and functional role of the examined TTAPs is warranted to develop novel treatment strategies.  相似文献
