We explore the problem of budgeted machine learning, in which the learning algorithm has free access to the training examples’ class labels but has to pay for each attribute that is specified. This learning model is appropriate in many areas, including medical applications. We present new algorithms for choosing which attributes to purchase of which examples, based on algorithms for the multi-armed bandit problem. In addition, we also evaluate a group of algorithms based on the idea of incorporating second-order statistics into decision making. Most of our algorithms are competitive with the current state of art and performed better when the budget was highly limited (in particular, our new algorithm AbsoluteBR2). Finally, we present new heuristics for selecting an instance to purchase after the attribute is selected, instead of selecting an instance uniformly at random, which is typically done. While experimental results showed some performance improvements when using the new instance selectors, there was no consistent winner among these methods.  相似文献

Spatial variability in green leaf cover of a semi-arid rangeland was studied by comparing field measurements on 50 m crossed transects to aerial and satellite imagery. The normalized difference vegetation index was calculated for 2 cm resolution images collected with a multispectral digital camera mounted on a radio-controlled helicopter, as well as a 30 m resolution Landsat Thematic Mapper image. Variograms of green cover from these two sources show that the range of influence for spatial autocorrelation extended to a distance of approximately 200 m. Field transects that are much smaller than the extent of this spatial autocorrelation are more likely to fall within local deviations from the mean landscape condition. A sampling scheme that exceeds the spatial scale of these localized deviations is shown to reduce sample variance and require fewer sampling locations to reach a given level of measurement uncertainty. The time and cost of more spatially extensive sampling at each location may be less than deploying to a larger number of locations with smaller transects, and unmanned aerial vehicles may be a valuable tool in extending current field sampling strategies for quantifying the health of shrub-dominated rangelands.  相似文献

Although much solution-based research has been carried out on silicon phthalacyanines, little work has been done on Si Pc LB films. In order to attempt studies on thin films, ultrathin Langmuir–Blodgett films of silicon(IV) phthalocyanine bis(trihexylsilyoxide), C68H94N8O2Si3 have been studied and characterised. Whilst silicon(IV) phthalocyanine bis(trihexylsilyoxide) is not a traditional LB film forming material, it can be made conducive to deposition by mixing with ideal film forming materials such as calixarenes. Surface pressure–area isotherms revealed an area per molecule of around 7.5 Å2 which indicates that the silicon(IV) phthalocyanine bis(trihexylsilyoxide) forms multi-lamella stacks. Thermal optical polarised spectroscopy revealed the formation of brightly coloured mesophases in films. DSC showed the presence of an irreversible A phase and a reversible T phase.  相似文献

Objective: PREDICT-HD is a large-scale international study of people with the Huntington disease (HD) CAG-repeat expansion who are not yet diagnosed with HD. The objective of this study was to determine the stage in the HD prodrome at which cognitive differences from CAG-normal controls can be reliably detected. Method: For each of 738 HD CAG-expanded participants, we computed estimated years to clinical diagnosis and probability of diagnosis in 5 years based on age and CAG-repeat expansion number (Langbehn, Brinkman, Falush, Paulsen, & Hayden, 2004). We then stratified the sample into groups: NEAR, estimated to be ≤9 years; MID, between 9 and 15 years; and FAR, ≥15 years. The control sample included 168 CAG-normal participants. Nineteen cognitive tasks were used to assess attention, working memory, psychomotor functions, episodic memory, language, recognition of facial emotion, sensory–perceptual functions, and executive functions. Results: Compared with the controls, the NEAR group showed significantly poorer performance on nearly all of the cognitive tests and the MID group on about half of the cognitive tests (p = .05, Cohen's d NEAR as large as ?1.17, MID as large as ?0.61). One test even revealed significantly poorer performance in the FAR group (Cohen's d = ?0.26). Individual tasks accounted for 0.2% to 9.7% of the variance in estimated proximity to diagnosis. Overall, the cognitive battery accounted for 34% of the variance; in comparison, the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale motor score accounted for 11.7%. Conclusions: Neurocognitive tests are robust clinical indicators of the disease process prior to reaching criteria for motor diagnosis of HD. Background: Chitosan glutamate and polyacrylic acid (e.g., carbomer 974P) are known to modulate the tight junctions in the intestinal wall and increase permeability and blood exposure of drugs absorbed orally by the paracellular route. Aim: To assess the impact of chitosan glutamate and carbomer 974P on the absorption of paracellularly absorbed model drug, acyclovir, in vitro and in rat in vivo. Methods: The influence of chitosan glutamate and carbomer 974P (alone and in combination with EDTA–Na2) on the in vitro Caco-2 permeability and oral pharmacokinetic profile in the rat of acyclovir was investigated. Results: In the presence of chitosan glutamate, the apparent permeability of acyclovir across Caco2 monolayer increased 4.1 times relative to control. This increase was accompanied by a significant (~60%) decrease in transepithelial electrical resistance values indicating opening of the tight junctions in the cell monolayer. In rat, chitosan glutamate doubled oral bioavailability of acyclovir and tripled the amount of acyclovir excreted unchanged into urine. In contrast, the effect of carbomer 974P was not statistically significant at 5% level. Conclusions: In conclusion, chitosan glutamate (1–3%) and chitosan glutamate (1%)/EDTA–Na2 (0.01%) are effective excipients to increase permeability of acyclovir across Caco-2 cell monolayers and the oral absorption in the rat in vivo.  相似文献

Twenty-seven research participants with dementia of the Alzheimer type were studied with the California Verbal Learning Test (D. C. Delis, J. H. Kramer, E. Kaplan, & B. A. Ober, 1987) and standardized volume measures of the mesial temporal cortical gray matter, neocortical gray matter, thalamus, and caudate nuclei, from magnetic resonance imaging. A pattern of atrophic brain changes in the mesial temporal lobes (MTL) and the thalamus, with relatively less severe atrophy in the neocortical gray matter, was associated with poorer learning of the word list. Similar patterns of brain atrophy were observed for measures of delayed recall and recognition hits. However, for delayed recall, neither contribution was statistically significant, and for recognition hits, MTL was only at the trend level for significance. These results provide evidence that the verbal memory deficit of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated not only with the mesial temporal limbic cortex, thought to be the site of earliest and most severe pathology in AD, but also with damage in the thalamus. Nickel oxide (NiO) was screen printed onto the surfaces of 3 and 8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) dense pre-fired substrates and then heat treated at temperatures from 1350° to 1550°C. The effect of NiO was dependent on the yttria content of the substrate. In 3 mol% YSZ, it was found to alter the phase composition from predominantly tetragonal with a small amount of cubic phase to one consisting of approximately equal amounts of cubic and monoclinic phase. The cubic grains were much larger than the monoclinic ones and contained more nickel. Furthermore, nickel was observed to migrate through the thickness of the tile, a distance of approximately 200 μm. In the 8 mol% YSZ substrates, the phase composition was unaltered, although large grains developed under the printed NiO layer and the nickel migration was confined to the extent of these large grains.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of aluminum phosphate (AlPO4) additions on the crystallization behavior and bioactivity of potassium fluorrichterite glasses and glass–ceramics. Four glass compositions with increasing amounts of AlPO4 were melted. Mica and fluorrichterite were present in all glass–ceramics after crystallization. The microstructure consisted of platelet-shaped mica and prismatic fluorrichterite crystals. After incubation in simulated body fluid, a layer consisting of spherical-nanosized particles was present on the surface of the glasses. X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of hydroxyapatite after incubation of the glass and glass–ceramic powders. The addition of AlPO4 promoted mica nucleation and bioactivity in K-fluorrichterite glass–ceramics.  相似文献

Previous research has linked specific sex role self-perceptions to two major eating disorders: anorexia nervosa and bulimia. To date, however, sex role self-perceptions and ideals unique to eating disturbance have not been distinguished from those related to depression and other concomitant psychopathology.
