BACKGROUND: Osteolipomas are distinguished from other intracranial lipomas by their arrangement of central adipose and peripheral osseous tissues and by characteristically arising in the suprasellar/interpeduncular region. METHODS: We report computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and pathology findings from this 34-year-old man who underwent surgical removal of this benign lesion. RESULTS: This case displays the distinctive histopathology that has been reported in 13 of 31 (42%) lipomas in this region. In contrast, ossification of lipomas at other intracranial sites is relatively rare. CONCLUSIONS: Ossification should be expected in many suprasellar/interpeduncular lipomas, and osteolipoma should be included in the radiologic differential diagnosis of fat-intensity masses with calcification in this region.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Spirituality is receiving greater attention in the medical literature, especially in the family practice journals. A widely applicable instrument to assess spirituality has been lacking, however, and this has hampered research on the relationship between spirituality and health in the clinical setting. METHODS: A new instrument, called the Spiritual Involvement and Beliefs Scale, was designed to be widely applicable across religious traditions, to assess actions as well as beliefs to address key components not assessed in other available measures, and to be easily administered and scored. The instrument is a questionnaire containing 26 items in a modified Likert-type format. Following careful pretesting, the instrument was administered to 50 family practice patients and 33 family practice educators. The validity and reliability of the instrument were then evaluated. RESULTS: By several measures, instrument reliability and validity are very good, with high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .92); strong test-retest reliability (r = .92); a clear four-factor structure; and a high correlation (r = .80) with another established measure of spirituality, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale. CONCLUSIONS: The Spiritual Involvement and Beliefs Scale (SIBS) appears to have good reliability and validity. Compared with other instruments that assess spirituality, the SIBS has several theoretical advantages, including broader scope, use of terms that avoid cultural-religious bias, and assessment of both beliefs and actions. More testing is underway to further assess its usefulness.  相似文献

The hypervelocity impact facility at Space Research Institute (SRI), Auburn University has recently completed a series of tests on coated thermoplastic films at cryogenic (40 K) and elevated temperatures (420 K). With a 1-in gap, two films were mounted in a frame that applied biaxial tension to each film. The materials were impacted with 40–100 μm soda lime spheres utilizing a plasma drag gun to accelerate the particles to velocities between 5 and 12 km/s. The facility diagnostics allow for the determination each particle's, size, velocity and impact location along with micrographs of the nature of the impact damage. This summary of the test includes a general overview of the nature of damage on the films along with representative impact micrographs of the impact sites.  相似文献

Sphingolipid-related metabolites have been implicated as potential signaling molecules in many studies with mammalian cells as well as in some studies with yeast. Our previous work showed that sphingolipid-deficient strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are unable to resist a heat shock, indicating that sphingolipids are necessary for surviving heat stress. Recent evidence suggests that one role for the sphingolipid intermediate ceramide may be to act as a second messenger to signal accumulation of the thermoprotectant trehalose. We examine here the mechanism for generating the severalfold increase in ceramide observed during heat shock. As judged by compositional analysis and mass spectrometry, the major ceramides produced during heat shock are similar to those found in complex sphingolipids, a mixture of N-hydroxyhexacosanoyl C18 and C20 phytosphingosines. Since the most studied mechanism for ceramide generation in animal cells is via a phospholipase C-type sphingomyelin hydrolysis, we examined S. cerevisiae for an analogous enzyme. Using [3H]phytosphingosine and [3H]inositol-labeled yeast sphingolipids, a novel membrane-associated phospholipase C-type activity that generated ceramide from inositol-P-ceramide, mannosylinositol-P-ceramide, and mannose(inositol-P)2-ceramide was demonstrated. The sphingolipid head groups were concomitantly liberated with the expected stoichiometry. However, other data demonstrate that the ceramide generated during heat shock is not likely to be derived by breakdown of complex sphingolipids. For example, the water-soluble fraction of heat-shocked cells showed no increase in any of the sphingolipid head groups, which is inconsistent with complex sphingolipid hydrolysis. Rather, we find that de novo ceramide synthesis involving ceramide synthase appears to be responsible for heat-induced ceramide elevation. In support of this hypothesis, we find that the potent ceramide synthase inhibitor, australifungin, completely inhibits both the heat-induced increase in incorporation of [3H]sphinganine into ceramide as well as the heat-induced increase in ceramide as measured by mass. Thus, heat-induced ceramide most likely arises by temperature activation of the enzymes that generate ceramide precursors, activation of ceramide synthase itself, or both.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of daily dietary supplementation with 1.25 g or 2.5 g of docosahexaenoic (DHA), in the absence of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), on serum lipids and lipoproteins in persons with combined hyperlipidemia (CHL) [serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) 130 to 220 mg/dL and triglycerides 150 to 400 mg/dL]. METHODS: After a 6-week dietary stabilization period, subjects entered a 4-week single-blind placebo (vegetable oil) run-in phase. Those with adequate compliance during the the run-in were randomized into one of three parallel groups (placebo, 1.25, or 2.5 g/day DHA) for 6 weeks of treatment. Supplements were administered in a triglyceride form contained in gelatin capsules. Primary outcome measurements were plasma phospholipid DHA content, serum triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). LDL-C and non-HDL-C. RESULTS: The DHA content of plasma phospholipids increased dramatically (2 to 3 fold) in a dose-dependent manner. Significant (p < 0.05) changes were observed in serum triglycerides (17 to 21% reduction) and HDL-C (6% increase) which were of similar magnitude in both DHA groups. Non-HDL-C [+1.6 (NS) and +5.7% (p < 0.04)] and LDL-C [+9.3% (NS) and +13.6% (p < 0.001)] increased in the DHA treatment groups. All lipid effects reached an apparent steady state within the first 3 weeks of treatment. CONCLUSION: Dietary DHA, in the absence of EPA, can affect lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with combined hyperlipidemia. The desirable triglyceride and HDL-C changes were present at a dose which did not significantly increased non-HDL-C or LDL-C. These preliminary findings suggest that dietary supplementation with 1.25 g DHA/day, provided in a triglyceride form, may be an effective tool to aid in the management of hypertriglyceridemia.  相似文献

The properties of duplex CTG.CAG and CGG.CCG, which are involved in the etiology of several hereditary neurodegenerative diseases, were investigated by a variety of methods, including circularization kinetics, apparent helical repeat determination, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The bending moduli were 1.13 x 10(-19) erg.cm for CTG and 1.27 x 10(-19) erg.cm for CGG, approximately 40% less than for random B-DNA. Also, the persistence lengths of the triplet repeat sequences were approximately 60% the value for random B-DNA. However, the torsional moduli and the helical repeats were 2.3 x 10(-19) erg.cm and 10.4 base pairs (bp)/turn for CTG and 2.4 x 10(-19) erg.cm and 10.3 bp/turn for CGG, respectively, all within the range for random B-DNA. Determination of the apparent helical repeat by the band shift assay indicated that the writhe of the repeats was different from that of random B-DNA. In addition, molecules of 224-245 bp in length (64-71 triplet repeats) were able to form topological isomers upon cyclization. The low bending moduli are consistent with predictions from crystallographic variations in slide, roll, and tilt. No unpaired bases or non-B-DNA structures could be detected by chemical and enzymatic probe analyses, two-dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis, and immunological studies. Hence, CTG and CGG are more flexible and highly writhed than random B-DNA and thus would be expected to act as sinks for the accumulation of superhelical density.  相似文献

A case series of eight cycles of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in five women diagnosed with malignant disorders is presented. These patients chose to defer definitive treatment for a chance for preservation of potential fertility. The response of these patients to ovarian stimulation, and the outcome, was compared with 17 IVF cycles in 12 age-matched patients with isolated tubal infertility. An apparent adverse influence of malignant disease on the quality and behaviour of oocytes was observed. Despite a comparable total number of oocytes per cycle in the two groups, a significantly reduced percentage of mature oocytes was retrieved per cycle from patients with malignant diseases. The oocytes from patients with malignant disorders were of a poorer quality and exhibited a significantly impaired fertilization rate compared to the controls. We propose that neoplastic processes, irrespective of the site or cell of origin, may have a detrimental impact on the biology of oocytes, an effect akin to that seen on spermatozoa in men with certain malignancies.  相似文献
