Modern medicine uses large amounts of one-way-devices. This includes mass articles as well as technically sophisticated ones, all of them in accordance with GMP (Good-manufacturing-practice) guidelines. Recycling of selected one-way devices in technically possible and economically useful. Prerequisite for recycling is the inclusion of legal, economic and ecologic points of view. In addition the validation of processes and agreement on installation of continuous quality control is necessary to minimise risks. We suggest admission of recycling and reuse of one-way devices and suggest to proceed stepwise: 1. Principal decision to permit recycling 2. Appointment of an interdisciplinary Federal Board "Medical Devices" for coordination and channelling of activities 3. Selection of products for recycling 4. Principal decision for the systematics of the process together with: process control, product control during a pre-testing stage, random tests in prospective, multi-centre studies for the control of production and use. 5. Introduction of internal quality control systems to allow internal and external control of routine work.  相似文献

Police investigation records of all suicide cases in 1992 (n = 769) and the suicide notes that had been left (224 notes for 154 subjects) were examined. Note-leavers were characterized as young females, of non-widowed marital status, with no history of previous suicide attempts, no previous psychiatric illness, and with religious beliefs. Suicide notes written by young people were longer, rich in emotions, and often begging for forgiveness. Suicide notes written by the elderly were shorter, contained specific instructions, and were less emotional. A significant proportion of note-leavers did mention their difficulties. Suicide notes may serve some explanatory purpose and may have a therapeutic role in helping the surviving relatives to understand the suicide. A knowledge of the messages contained within suicide notes could be useful for suicide prevention programmes. The significance of suicide notes is best understood within the context of the occurrence of suicides.  相似文献

Isoflavonoids are a class of flavonoids that are derived in the human diet mainly from soybean-based foods. The major dietary isoflavonoids, genistein and daidzein, have estrogen-like activity and are classed as phytoestrogens. Because estrogens can lower serum LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol, the objective of this study was to determine if isoflavonoids could improve serum lipids in healthy subjects. Forty-six men and 13 postmenopausal women not receiving hormone replacement therapy completed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of two-way parallel design and 8 wk duration. One tablet containing 55 mg of isoflavonoids (predominantly in the form of genistein) or one placebo tablet was taken daily with the evening meal. Subjects maintained their usual diet and physical activity, which were unchanged throughout the intervention. Measurement of isoflavonoids and their metabolites in 24-h urine samples provided an assessment of compliance and of isoflavonoid metabolism. Serum total, LDL, HDL and HDL subclass cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoprotein (a) were assessed at baseline and during the last week of intervention. After adjustment for baseline values, no significant differences in postintervention serum lipid and lipoprotein (a) concentrations between groups were identified. Further adjustment for age, gender and weight change did not alter the results. In addition, changes in urinary isoflavonoids were not significantly correlated with changes in serum lipids and lipoprotein (a). Therefore, this study does not support the hypothesis that isoflavonoid phytoestrogens can improve the serum lipids, at least in subjects with average serum cholesterol concentrations.  相似文献

Previous research has shown that bicycle helmet use among older children and adolescents continues to be low. This study determined middle school students' knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors related to bicycle helmet use. Six middle schools in Hillsborough County, Fla., served as the research settings. A pretested survey instrument was administered to students. Overall, 3,333 sixth and seventh graders responded. Results showed that most children owned a bicycle, 38.1% owned a helmet, but only 15.8% wore a helmet the last time they rode a bike. Many students (49.7%) did not know or did not believe there was a bicycle helmet law in Florida. Predictors of helmet use were intention to use a helmet the next time one rides a bike, having a helmet, siblings' use of helmets, and friends' use of helmets.  相似文献

The paper presents a test of an ecologically differentiated model of social network orientation for adolescents that distinguished between different social network reference groups (family, peers, and nonfamily adults). The model was tested in two consecutive studies. Study 1 describes initial model development (N = 120). Study 2 presents a confirmatory factor analysis with a second sample (N = 430) to replicate the factor structure developed in Study 1. Results supported a three-factor model of network orientation that differentiated between network reference groups. Analyses of concurrent and predictive validity indicated that orientation to network reference groups was differentially related to the perceived quality and frequency of support from members of respective social network groups. Group differences (gender, race) regarding network orientation to different network reference groups were consistent with studies of other social network processes. Implications for the study of the network orientation and the study of social networks more generally are discussed.  相似文献

A protein (mCLCA1) has been cloned from a mouse lung cDNA library that bears strong sequence homology with the recently described bovine tracheal, Ca2+-sensitive chloride channel protein (bCLCA1), bovine lung endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (Lu-ECAM-1), and the human intestinal Ca2+-sensitive chloride channel protein (hCLCA1). In vitro, its 3.1-kilobase message translates into a 100-kDa protein that can be glycosylated to an approximately 125-kDa product. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis from lysates of mCLCA1 cDNA-transfected transformed human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) reveals proteins of 130, 125, and 90 kDa as well as a protein triplet in the 32-38 kDa size range. Western analyses with antisera raised against Lu-ECAM-1 peptides show that the N-terminal region of the predicted open reading frame is present only in the larger size proteins (i.e. 130, 125, and 90 kDa), whereas the C-terminal region of the open reading frame is observed in the 32-38 kDa size proteins, suggesting a posttranslational, proteolytic processing of a precursor protein (125/130 kDa) into 90 kDa and 32-38 kDa components similar to that reported for Lu-ECAM-1. Hydrophobicity analyses predict four transmembrane domains for the 90-kDa protein. The mCLCA1 mRNA is readily detected by Northern analysis and by in situ hybridization in the respiratory epithelia of trachea and bronchi. Transient expression of mCLCA1 in HEK293 cells was associated with an increase in whole cell Cl- current that could be activated by Ca2+ and ionomycin and inhibited by 4, 4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid, dithiothreitol, and niflumic acid. The discovery of mCLCA1 opens the door for further investigating the possible contribution of a Ca2+-sensitive chloride conductance to the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis.  相似文献

Extracellular purine nucleotides elicit a diverse range of biological responses through binding to specific cell surface receptors. The ionotrophic P2X subclass of purinoreceptors respond to ATP by stimulation of calcium ion permeability; however, it is unknown how P2X purinoreceptor activation is linked to intracellular signaling pathways. We report that stimulation of PC12 cells with ATP results in the activation of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases ERK1 and ERK2 and was wholly dependent upon extracellular calcium ions. Treatment of the cells with adenosine, AMP, ADP, UTP, or alpha,beta-methylene ATP was without effect; however, MAP kinase activation was abolished by pretreatment with suramin and reactive blue 2. The calcium-activated tyrosine kinase, Pyk2, acts as an upstream regulator of the MAP kinases and became tyrosine phosphorylated following treatment of the cells with ATP. We have ruled out the involvement of depolarization-mediated calcium influx because specific blockers of voltage-gated calcium channels did not affect MAP kinase activation. These data provide direct evidence that calcium influx through P2X2 receptors results in the activation of the MAP kinase cascade. Finally, we demonstrate that a different line of PC12 cells respond to ATP through P2Y2 purinoreceptors, providing an explanation for the conflicting findings of purine nucleotide responsiveness in PC12 cells.  相似文献

Opioid antagonists block the positive hedonic response to food taste and are potent inhibitors of palatability-driven feeding. However, the specific brain regions within which opioid peptide secretion contributes to the maintenance of palatability-driven feeding have not been clearly established. In the present study, c-Fos immunohistochemistry was used to identify regions rostral to the hindbrain that display cellular activation in response to a palatable meal and the meal-paired environment. Further, it was determined whether any of the cellular responses could be prevented by pretreating animals with naltrexone. Twenty brain regions known to be involved in gustation, appetite and reward functions were examined. Ingestion of the palatable meal (3.0 g of 30% shortening, 20% sucrose and 50% powdered Purina rat chow) increased Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) in lateral hypothalamus (LH), ventral tegmentum (VTA) and medial preoptic area (MPOA), and decreased FLI in the habenula (Hab). The meal-paired environment increased FLI in the VTA and nucleus accumbens shell (NAC shell). Naltrexone (1.0 mg/kg, i.p.) did not block consumption of the small meal but did prevent all of the distinctive increases in FLI induced by the meal and meal-paired environment. Since naltrexone, alone, increased FLI in VTA, NAC shell, central amygdala (ceA) and laterodorsal bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTLD), the blunting of ingestion reward by naltrexone may result from direct or transsynaptic activating effects on opponent neuronal activity within this highly interconnected set of structures that mediate and modulate reward.  相似文献
