An analysis of the coupling of an injection laser diode to a planar LiNbO3waveguide

Calculated butt coupling efficiency between a GaAlAs double heterostructure laser and a single-mode LiNbO3Ti-diffused optical waveguide is presented in this paper as a function of the transverse displacement, the angular alignment, the longitudinal separation between the laser and the waveguide end surfaces, the radiation field of the laser diode and its dependence on the laser diode structure, and the mode profile of the waveguide and its dependence on experimental diffusion parameters. The maximum efficiency is less than 40 percent because of the mismatch between the waveguide mode and the laser radiation, caused primarily by the experimental limitations in their structures. The effect of the reflection of the waveguide end surface on the laser oscillation has also been estimated.     

Fatal meconium aspiration in spite of appropriate perinatal airway management: pulmonary and placental evidence of prenatal disease

The cytoskeletal components of hamster oocytes, zygotes, and spontaneously activated parthogenotes were examined after immunocytochemical labeling. Microtubules were found only in the anastral, tangentially arranged second meiotic spindle of unfertilized oocytes. Taxol treatment of unfertilized oocytes greatly augmented astral microtubules in both the metaphase II spindle and the cortex. Disruption of the meiotic spindle microtubules with nocodazole resulted in cortical chromosomal scattering. During hamster sperm incorporation and pronuclear formation, no sperm aster was detected in association with the male DNA. Instead, a large overlapping array of microtubules assembled in the cortex. By mitosis, this interphase array disassembled and an anastral metaphase spindle formed. Microtubule and chromatin configurations were also imaged in hamster oocytes injected with human sperm. Astral microtubules were absent from the sperm centrosome. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to the hamster oocyte penetration assay, a test commonly used by in vitro fertilization clinics to demonstrate the fertilizing ability of human sperm. We conclude that since hamsters and humans follow different methods of centrosome inheritance, maternal and paternal, respectively, the hamster may be an inappropriate model for exploring microtubule and centrosomal defects in humans or for assaying postinsemination forms of human male fertility defects.     

Spiral CT angiography in an infant with severe hypoplasia of a long segment of the descending aorta

Annuloaortic ectasia due to Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome (SGS) is reported. A 10-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of chest pain. On admission, he was diagnosed as SGS on the basis of his various anomalies. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed a bicuspid aortic valve and marked annular dilatation, Doppler flow studies revealed severe aortic regurgitation, and retrograde aortography showed severe aortic regurgitation with annular dilatation. Successful aortic root replacement was performed; subsequent histologic examination of the ascending aorta demonstrated cystic medial necrosis. In conclusion, SGS is a generalized connective tissue dysplasia, with clinical manifestations of cardiovascular lesions similar to those in Marfan syndrome. Aortic root replacement was successfully performed; however, recurrence of aortic aneurysms outside of the ascending aorta should be carefully observed. Surgical treatment for cardiovascular disorders may be necessary to save the life of patients with SGS.     

In vitro studies on the use of clay, clay minerals and charcoal to adsorb bovine rotavirus and bovine coronavirus

Rotaviruses are the leading cause and coronaviruses are the major contributors of acute gastroenteritis in the young of various mammalian and avian species. Despite numerous trials and decades of research, vaccines have limited efficacy particularly for calves. As an alternative method of controlling infection, we have investigated broad spectrum antiviral agents that are not discriminatory among various viruses. This report involves testing a variety of adsorbent agents including charcoal, clay, and clay minerals to adsorb rotavirus and coronavirus in vitro. Results revealed that all the adsorbent agents had good to excellent capability of adsorbing rotavirus and excellent capability of adsorbing coronavirus. Percent adsorptions ranged from 78.74% to 99.89% for rotavirus and 99.99% for coronavirus; while sand (negative control) was < 0.01%. A high affinity binding was present as determined by a low percent desorption (0.06-3.09%). However, the adsorbent bound virus complex retained, and may have actually enhanced, infectivity.     

Mechanical consequences of core drilling and bone-grafting on osteonecrosis of the femoral head

We employed an anatomically realistic three-dimensional finite-element model to explore several biomechanical variables involved in coring or bone-grafting of a segmentally necrotic femoral head. The mechanical efficacy of several variants of these procedures was indexed in terms of their alteration of the stress:strength ratio in at-risk necrotic cancellous bone. For coring alone, the associated structural compromise was generally modest, provided that the tract did not extend near the subchondral plate. Cortical bone-grafting was potentially of great structural benefit for femoral heads in which the graft penetrated deeply into the superocentral or lateral aspect of the lesion, ideally with abutment against the subchondral plate. By contrast, central or lateral grafts that stopped well short of the subchondral plate were contraindicated biomechanically because they caused marked elevations in stress on the necrotic cancellous bone. Calculated levels of stress were relatively insensitive to variations in the diameter of the graft.     

The science-industry interface in the petroleum industry: Correlation of time series of indicators and their spectra,and growth modelling

Petroleum production and exploration, used as petroleum industry indicators, and accumulation of petroleum-related geoscience literature, used as a science indicator, were compared by several means to gauge the degree of interaction between science and the industry in the period 1934–1990. Methods of comparison employed were: time domain correlations and crosscorrelation; correlations of spectra using coherence and crosspower spectra, and growth-modelling of the indicators. A fifty-year exploration cycle was found, beginning about 1945. Principal features of this cycle seem to coincide with prominent features in the time series for geoscience literature, and both of these variables are correlated with petroleum production. All three variables appear to have been determined ultimately by economic and political events which affected the petroleum industry. All of them show long-period cycles which coincide with the fourth Kondratiev cycle and the beginning of the fifth Kondratiev. The longest time series used (petroleum production in the United States, 1860–1990) shows long-period cycles matching the third, fourth and fifth Kondratiev cycles.     

Maternal depression and early positive parenting predict future conduct problems in young children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk for adverse outcomes such as substance abuse and criminality, particularly if they develop conduct problems. Little is known about early predictors of the developmental course of conduct problems among children with ADHD, however. Parental psychopathology and parenting were assessed in 108 children who first met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) criteria for ADHD at 4-7 years old. When demographic variables and baseline ADHD and conduct problems were controlled, maternal depression predicted conduct problems 2-8 years following the initial assessment, whereas positive parenting during the structured parent- child interaction task predicted fewer future conduct problems. These findings suggest that maternal depression is a risk factor, whereas early positive parenting is a protective factor, for the developmental course of conduct problems among children with ADHD. Full-wave aperture coupled patch antenna

An aperture coupled patch antenna with a dual-lobed (cavity mode TM/sub 200/) radiation pattern is described. The antenna employs a full-wavelength long patch fed via a butterfly-shaped aperture and a stripline feed network. This configuration provides high patch to feed network coupling and reduced back radiation. Measured return loss and pattern data are presented with proposals for several potential applications of this element.<>
