Prostate cancer accounts for one-third of noncutaneous cancers diagnosed in US men and is a leading cause of cancer-related death. Advances in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic imaging now provide very large data sets describing both the structural and local chemical properties of cells within prostate tissue. Uniting spectroscopic imaging data and computer-aided diagnoses (CADx), our long term goal is to provide a new approach to pathology by automating the recognition of cancer in complex tissue. The first step toward the creation of such CADx tools requires mechanisms for automatically learning to classify tissue types—a key step on the diagnosis process. Here we demonstrate that genetics-based machine learning (GBML) can be used to approach such a problem. However, to efficiently analyze this problem there is a need to develop efficient and scalable GBML implementations that are able to process very large data sets. In this paper, we propose and validate an efficient GBML technique——based on an incremental genetics-based rule learner. exploits massive parallelisms via the message passing interface (MPI) and efficient rule-matching using hardware-implemented operations. Results demonstrate that is capable of performing prostate tissue classification efficiently, making a compelling case for using GBML implementations as efficient and powerful tools for biomedical image processing.  相似文献

The International Telecommunication Union launched the third-generation project in 1986 with the aim to provide global personal communication using an inexpensive mobile terminal that can truly facilitate communication "anywhere, anytime". In previous years, standardization activities toward IMT-2000 have accelerated toward concrete specifications. By June 1998, a total of 15 proposals from around the world had been submitted to the ITU as radio transmission technology candidates. Since then, the 3G standardization landscape has seen many changes-a steady progression of the convergence process. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the worldwide harmonization efforts on the standardization of third-generation terrestrial mobile communication systems. The status, as of October 1999 when this article was written, of the technical specifications within 3G partnership projects are also summarized.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To compare transesophageal atrial pacing stress echocardiography with dobutamine stress echocardiography for feasibility, safety, duration, patient acceptance and concordance in inducing wall motion abnormalities. BACKGROUND: Transesophageal atrial pacing is an effective method of increasing heart rate and has been used in the assessment of coronary artery disease. METHODS: Both tests were performed in sequence on the same patients in random order. Transesophageal atrial pacing stress echocardiography began at a heart rate of 10 beats/min above the baseline value and was increased by 20 beats/min every two min until 85% of the age-predicted maximum heart rate or another end point was reached. Dobutamine echocardiography was performed using three-min stages and a maximum dose of 40 microg/kg per min. Atropine (total dose < or =2 mg) was administered at the start of the 40 microg/kg per min stage if needed to augment heart rate or during pacing if Wenckebach heart block occurred. RESULTS: Transesophageal atrial pacing stress echocardiography was feasible in 100 of 104 patients (96%); the duration (8.6+/-3.6 min) was significantly shorter than that of dobutamine stress echocardiography (15.1+/-3.9 min) (p = 0.0001). With transesophageal atrial pacing stress echocardiography, the recovery period was shorter, symptoms and dysrhythmias were fewer, hypertension and hypotension were less common and target heart rate was more frequently achieved. No complications occurred with either test. Patient acceptance was satisfactory. Agreement between results of both tests was good for segmental wall motion scoring with a 16-segment model, scores 1 to 5 (kappa: rest, 0.79; peak, 0.57) and test interpretation (normal, ischemia, infarction or resting wall motion abnormality with ischemia) (kappa: 0.77). CONCLUSIONS: Transesophageal atrial pacing stress echocardiography is a feasible, well-tolerated alternative to dobutamine stress echocardiography. It can be performed rapidly and shows good agreement with dobutamine stress echocardiography in the induction of myocardial ischemia.  相似文献

The high comorbidity of depression and anxiety is well established empirically but not well understood conceptually, in terms of either psychological or biological mechanisms. A neuropsychological model of regional brain activity in emotion provides contrasting hypotheses for depression and anxiety, with depression associated with a relative decrease and anxiety with a relative increase in right-posterior activity. These hypotheses received support in a comparison of individuals diagnosed with depression and community controls, and also in a separate study of nonpatients administered a measure of perceptual asymmetry. Hierarchical regressions revealed that depression and anxiety were uniquely and jointly associated with perceptual asymmetry. In light of consistent empirical support for the model, implications for conceptualizations of the comorbidity of depression and anxiety are discussed. Daily neutrophil counts show considerable variability in normal subjects. The dynamics of these apparently erratic fluctuations have not been characterized. We hypothesized that this variability might reflect the kind of 1/f-like (inverse power-law) spectrum seen in other physiologic processes. Fast Fourier transform analysis of neutrophil count data over 64 consecutive days from four previously reported normal volunteers showed a good fit (r = 0.84; p 0.001) to the predicted power-law regression line (y = ?1.14x ?1.05). Further characterization of normal and pathologic neutrophil spectra may have diagnostic value.  相似文献

Stress analysis of a water storage structure has been carried out for static and seismic loading. Based on the stress analyses results, assessment of most likely failure modes for the structure caused by seismic event has been carried out. An attempt has been made to quantify the initial leakage rate and average emptying time for the structure during seismic event after evaluating the various crack parameters, viz., crack-width and crack-spacing at the locations of interest. Finally, the seismic fragility of the structure is developed as families of conditional probability curves plotted against peak ground acceleration (PGA) parameter at the location of interest considering the randomness and uncertainty associated with various parameters that could affect the seismic structural response.  相似文献
