The authors describe a transient phase during training on a movement sequence wherein, after an initial improvement in speed and decrease in variability, individual participants' performance showed a significant increase in variability without change in mean performance speed. Subsequent to this phase, as practice continued, variability again decreased, performance significantly exceeded the gains predicted by extrapolation of the initial learning curve, the type of errors committed changed, and performance became more coherent. The transient phase of increased variability may reflect a mixture of 2 (or more) performance routines before the more effective one is set and mastered, presumably the setting up of a sequence-specific representation. Both group and individual analyses indicated a departure from the single process (e.g., power-law) model of learning. However, although similar phases appeared in the mean group data, there was little correspondence to individual participants' time courses, and the individuals' gains in the second low-variability phase were masked. The paper considers the Baer-Nunziato model for two-phase flow in porous media, with discontinuous porosity. Computing solutions of the Riemann problem rests on capturing the jump in the solution across the porosity jump. A recent study (Lowe in J. Comput. Phys. 204:598–632, 2005) showed that numerical discretizations may fail to correctly capture the jump conditions across the so-called compaction wave, and yield incorrect solutions. We have formulated the Baer-Nunziato system using the Riemann invariants across the porosity jump, and propose a hybrid algorithm that uses the Riemann invariants formulation across the compaction wave, and the conservative formulation away from the compaction wave. Intramolecular electronic energy transfer (intra-EET) was investigated in an isolated bichromophoric naphthalene ( N ) and anthracene ( A ) 1:1 molecular cluster. Investigation of the spectroscopic properties of these chromophores, separately and loosely bound in a van der Waals complex, helps to understand the dependence of the EET rate on the initially excited vibronic level and on the cluster's interchromophoric orientation. Measurement of fluorescence excitation spectra of anthracene at different anthracene pressures shows bands that can be assigned to dimers of anthracene. From measurement of the anthracene excitation spectrum at increasing naphthalene pressures one can identify other spectral features, characterized by different spectral shifts from excitations of the bare molecule. Some transitions are probably due to a 13.5-cnr−1 progression associated with an interchromophore cluster bond. Pressure dependence of fluorescence intensity gives evidence for 1:1 cluster composition, and for a slow intra-EET rate that is associated with an unfavored orientation of the two chromophores in one of the two possible conformers of the A-N cluster, as supported by a calculation of the cluster geometry and by comparison with a recent study of intra-EET in the A–(CH2)n-N bichromophoric molecules. 相似文献

The main results of a feasibility study of a combined cycle electricity generation plant, driven by highly concentrated solar energy and high-temperature central receiver technology, are presented. New developments in solar tower optics, high-performance air receivers and solar-to-gas turbine interface, were incorporated into a new solar power plant concept. The new design features 100% solar operation at design point, and hybrid (solar and fuel) operation for maximum dispatchability. Software tools were developed to simulate the new system configuration, evaluate its performance and cost, and optimize its design. System evaluation and optimization were carried out for two power levels. The results show that the new system design has cost and performance advantages over other solar thermal concepts, and can be competitive against conventional fuel power plants in certain markets even without government subsidies. 相似文献

Our previous analysis of the T cell reactivity to myelin antigens in a group of 24 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 16 control individuals revealed that the autoimmune response to myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) predominates in MS over that to myelin basic protein (MBP), proteolipid protein or myelin-associated glycoprotein, suggesting a prevalent role for the autoimmune response to MOG in the pathogenesis of MS. Using a recombinant human MOG (rhMOG) preparation corresponding to the extracellular immunoglobulin-like domain of the MOG molecule, we have now analyzed another group of 52 MS patients and 49 control individuals for reactivity of their peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) to rhMOG and to MBP concomitantly. Of the 52 MS patients tested 24 responded to MOG and 10 out of 49 responded to MBP, whereas only 5 MOG-reactive and 4 MBP-reactive control individuals were detected out of the 49 tested. These results are therefore highly confirmatory of the predominant reactivity to MOG in MS. The analysis of the primary proliferative response to 11 synthetic overlapping peptides (phMOG) spanning the extracellular domain of human MOG by PBL from 9 MS patients and 15 control individuals (9 healthy controls and 6 patients with neurological diseases other than MS) further supports a prevalent role for the autoimmune response to MOG in MS, as only 1 of the 15 controls tested showed reactivity to any of the phMOG, whilst 5 out of the 9 patients studied reacted to at least 1 of the phMOG. PBL from 10 MS patients, and from 4 controls, were selected in vitro with each of the phMOG. Of the 10 patients studied 7 reacted to at least 1 phMOG upon secondary stimulation and the reactivity was mostly directed to epitopes localized within three main regions (amino acids 1-22, 34-56 and 64-96), as was observed for the primary response of PBL. The predominant response to MOG of PBL from MS patients as demonstrated in two separate studies using native MOG and rhMOG as antigens, and the high incidence of reactivity of these PBL compared to the lack of response to phMOG by control PBL, emphasize the relevance of MOG in MS pathogenesis and support a primary role for the autoimmune T cell response to MOG in disease development. 相似文献

The effect of the inflammatory response on regenerative processes in the brain is complex. This complexity is even greater when the cause of the tissue damage is an autoimmune response. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease in which demyelination foci are formed in the central nervous system. The degree of repair through oligodendrocyte regeneration and remyelination is insufficient. Ephrins are membrane-bound ligands activating tyrosine kinase signaling proteins that are known to have an inhibitory effect on oligodendrocyte regeneration. In this study, we examined the expression of ephrins on immune cells of 43 patients with relapsing-remitting (RR) MS compared to 27 matched healthy controls (HC). We found an increased expression of ephrin-A2, -A3 and -B3, especially on T cell subpopulations. We also showed overexpression of ephrins on immune cells of patients with RR-MS that increases the forward signaling pathway and that expression of ephrins on immune cells has an inhibitory effect on the differentiation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) in vitro. Our study findings support the concept that the immune activity of T cells in patients with RR-MS has an inhibitory effect on the differentiation capacity of OPCs through the expression and forward signaling of ephrins. 相似文献

A dynamic programming algorithm is presented for determining an optimal solution to a problem where n jobs are to be sequenced in a two-stage production environment. Conditions are that the job sequence is the same in both stages; each job requires setups at each stage; setup times are sequence dependent; the second stage setups may overlap first stage production; and the optimal solutions is that with minimum overall duration. The recursion relation is developed, and computational schemes are described for obtaining the optimal solution or solutions. Computational experience is reported.
