INTRODUCTION: Blue nevi are small acquired melanocytic tumors. Two clinical forms are described, a fibrous form and a cellular form. Giant nevi are exceptional. CASE REPORT: We describe a patient with a giant blue nevus of the scalp. In addition to this congenital, noninvasive tumor the patient presented numerous cutaneous melanocytic nevi. The main lesion was removed by surgical exeresis followed later with reconstruction plasty. The histological examination of the surgical specimen showed an infiltrating blue cell nevi. After a 4-year follow-up, there has been no recurrence and no metastasis. DISCUSSION: There have been 11 cases of giant blue nevi reported in the literature. All were congenital lesions with polymorphous clinical and histological aspects. Fibrous forms are noninvasive and cellular forms have a potential for local invasion, whether shortly after birth or later with invasion of muscles, bone and meninges without intracerebral extension. Congenital blue nevi require early surgical exeresis.  相似文献

In the present paper, an electronic prototype designed to acquire electrocardiographic signals from marine mammals has been developed. The system consists of a portable device that allows the on-line acquisition of EKG signals through a parallel port interface that is connected to a laptop computer. The EKG waveform, the voltage level, the bandwidth and the most relevant information from this type of signals is stored and analysed under real-time conditions by means of specifically implemented software. The whole system has been successfully tested to obtain the EKG from captive dolphins. The characteristics of the equipment presented here, with its low cost, size and energy requirements accomplish a portable system suitable for the acquisition of this type of signals in conductive media such as the seawater.  相似文献

We describe a transputer-based system suitable for accurate measurements of single-fiber electromyographic jitter. It consists of a conventional electromyograph, a home-made interface and a commercially available transputer-based board installed within a PC/AT compatible. Taking advantage of the concurrent operation of two transputer modules, the system features simultaneous data acquisition and statistical signal processing: while data are acquired and analyzed, a real-time visualization of the signal latency and its variability is provided. In the present configuration, the system can acquire and analyze up to 40,000 consecutive action potentials, which can be grouped into up to eight sets at different stimulation rates programmable up to 16 Hz. Since the determination of the electromyographic signal latency relies on least-squares smoothing and interpolation of the acquired data rather than on amplitude-threshold triggering, a low value (0.7 microsecond) of so called technical jitter is achieved. Computing power and memory can be easily extended by addition of transputer-based modules. Typical results of data acquisition and on-line analysis are reported.  相似文献

Compared smoking treatment programs using negative (recording number of cigarettes smoked) vs positive (recording number of urges resisted) self-monitoring. Nine Ss each, mean age 36.7 yrs, participated in 1 of 2 similar broad-spectrum treatment programs, within which they either used positive or negative self-monitoring. Over treatment, Ss in both self-monitoring groups demonstrated similarly significant reductions in smoking frequency as compared to the control group. These findings were generally maintained at follow-up. It is suggested that clinical findings question the accuracy of the "positive" and "negative" labels used to designate the 2 self-monitoring modes. Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) were used as a sentinel species to monitor the contamination and bioavailability of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Hudson River watershed. Several tree swallow nest box colonies around and downstream from Hudson Falls, NY, were studied. Tree swallow eggs, adults, and 5-, 10-, and 15-day-old nestlings were collected and analyzed for 103 PCB congeners. Emergent insects collected by net (primarily Odonata) or as a food bolus (primarily Diptera) taken from the mouths of adult tree swallows returning to the nest were analyzed in the same manner. Total PCB concentrations (wet weight) in eggs from two contaminated sites ranged from 9000 to 25,000 ng/g and accumulated to 32,000 and 96,000 ng/g in 15-day-old nestling at two contaminated sites. The congener patterns of PCBs in eggs, nestlings, and adults were compared to those found in emergent insects (Odonata and Diptera) using principal components analysis. The PCB patterns of the biota differed from that of Aroclor technical mixtures. PCB patterns in adult tree swallows were similar to those in eggs, while the patterns in dietary insects were similar to nestling tree swallows. Uptake rate constants were determined for tree swallow nestlings and compared between the two contaminated sites. The estimated PCB congener uptake rate constants were 0.008-0.02 d(-1) based on uptake in nestlings until day 15 post-hatch. The rate constants were comparable between the two study areas and may be used to predict nestling contamination at other locations. Our studies confirm the utility of nestling tree swallows to evaluate localized PCB contamination.  相似文献

The impact of minimal processing technology on the sensory quality and the growth of micro‐organisms in eight varieties of cauliflower packaged in four different films (one PVC and three P‐Plus) was measured and quantified during more than 25 days of storage at 4 °C. Other important parameters such as weight loss and gas concentration in the packages were also determined. The composition of the atmosphere in the packages of minimally processed cauliflower depended on both the permeability of the film used for the packaging and the variety of cauliflower. When establishing shelf‐life, loss of sensory quality was the deciding factor rather than loss of microbiological quality. The initial microbial load proved more important than the composition of the atmosphere inside the packages. In sensory evaluation the most important aspect was colour. In instrumental evaluation, coordinate b* was the main means of estimating shelf‐life. The combination of P‐Plus 120 film and varieties of cauliflower of large size and great vigour allowed the atmosphere inside the packages to have an O2 level below 10% and a CO2 level above 10%. That atmosphere composition proved essential for maintaining the sensory quality of minimally processed cauliflower. In these conditions, samples attained a shelf‐life of more than 25 days. However, the different behaviours of the cauliflower varieties make it necessary to establish particular packaging conditions. The use of less permeable films than those used in this study, or the use of actively modified atmospheres, could be an alternative for those varieties that require special packaging conditions when processed using this technology. Four heavy-duty and medium-duty diesel vehicles were tested in six different aftertreament configurations using a chassis dynamometer to characterize the occurrence of nucleation (the conversion of exhaust gases to particles upon dilution). The aftertreatment included four different diesel particulate filters and two selective catalytic reduction (SCR) devices. All DPFs reduced the emissions of solid particles by several orders of magnitude, but in certain cases the occurrence of a volatile nucleation mode could increase total particle number emissions. The occurrence of a nucleation mode could be predicted based on the level of catalyst in the aftertreatment, the prevailing temperature in the aftertreatment, and the age of the aftertreatment. The particles measured during nucleation had a high fraction of sulfate, up to 62% of reconstructed mass. Additionally the catalyst reduced the toxicity measured in chemical and cellular assays suggesting a pathway for an inverse correlation between particle number and toxicity. The results have implications for exposure to and toxicity of diesel PM.  相似文献

The global trade of tropical fruits is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. In 2018, the production was approximately 100 million tones, an increase of 3.3% compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, according to the Food and Agricultural Organization, every year one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption is lost or wasted. More specifically, around 45% of the fruits, constituted mainly by peels, seeds, and pulps after juice extraction, are discarded mainly in the agricultural and processing steps. Therefore, decreasing and/or using these byproducts, which are often rich in bioactive components, have become an important focus for both the scientific community and the fruit processing industry. In this line, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) technology is expected to play a significant role in the valorization of these byproducts. This review presents the concepts of a tropical fruit biorefinery using supercritical CO2 extraction and the potential applications of the isolated fractions. There is a specific focus on the extraction of bioactive compounds, that is, carotenoids and phenolics, but also oils and other valuable molecules. Moreover, the techno-economic and environmental performance is assessed. Overall, the biorefinery of tropical fruits via SFE provides new opportunities for development of food and pharmaceutical products with improved economic and environmental performance.  相似文献

The perchloroethylene coal refining process was used on North Dakota lignite coal. Effects of extraction time, perchloroethylenexoal ratio and artificial weathering were studied to determine their effects on the removal of organic sulfur. The artificial weathering conditions used were found to be too harsh and caused a decrease in the amount of organic sulfur removed, unlike normal weathering conditions. Additional studies were done involving various ligands, and showed that the addition of certain ligands during the process aided in the extraction of organic sulfur from the coal.  相似文献

Decision tree classifiers have received much recent attention, particularly with regards to land cover classifications at continental to global scales. Despite their many benefits and general flexibility, the use of decision trees with high spatial resolution data has not yet been fully explored. In support of the National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Program (VMP), we have examined the feasibility of using a commercially available decision tree classifier with multitemporal satellite data from the Enhanced Thematic Mapper-Plus (ETM+) instrument to map 11 land cover types at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area near Milford, PA. Ensemble techniques such as boosting and consensus filtering of the training data were used to improve both the quality of the input training data as well as the final products.Using land cover classes as specified by the National Vegetation Classification Standard at the Formation level, the final land cover map has an overall accuracy of 82% (κ=0.80) when tested against a validation data set acquired on the ground (n=195). This same accuracy is 99.5% when considering only forest vs. nonforest classes. Usage of ETM+ scenes acquired at multiple dates improves the accuracy over the use of a single date, particularly for the different forest types. These results demonstrate the potential applicability and usability of such an approach to the entire National Park system, and to high spatial resolution land cover and forest mapping applications in general.  相似文献
