At the Seventh European Coke and Ironmaking Congress in Linz on September 12–14, 2016, attention focused on the prospects for the development of ferrous metallurgy. The combination of a blast furnace and an oxygen converter is expected to remain the primary system for smelting steel, until electrosmelting becomes dominant in the 2060s. This article compares the total amount of fuel used in making steel from dispersed iron-bearing metallurgical wastes by different alternative technologies. Recycling such wastes by briquetting them and then smelting the briquets in blast furnaces is shown to be clearly more advantageous from an economic and environmental standpoint. The availability of excess pig-iron production capacity at a metallurgical plant allows the plant to recycle the given type of wastes by the most cost-effective means while also reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Blast-furnace smelting today is organized so as to produce low-silicon hot metal, with subsequent desulfurization.
