Sliding wear of 304 and 310 stainless steels

Blocks of 304 (metastable) and 310 (stable) austenitic stainless steels were tested in argon against M2 tool steel rings. Scanning, transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis, together with microhardness measurements, showed that the strain-induced martensite transformation in 304 steel affects the form and composition of the wear debris and the nature of the transfer layer. The hardness of the transfer layer relative to the hardness of the adjacent deformed base material is also important, as shown in earlier work on Cu-Be. During early stages of sliding, the friction values for both alloys are similar, but whereas the friction continues to rise smoothly to a steady state value for 310 steel, the formation of α'-martensite in 304 steel gives a lower average value of friction coefficient with large fluctuations.     

The relationships between overt and fantasy aggression.

The interrelationships among aggressive needs, anticipation of punishment, and overt aggressive behavior in 29 lower-class boys were investigated in this study. Three hypotheses were tested: 1) among lower class boys, those having a relatively great amount of fantasy aggressive needs indulge in more overt aggressive behavior than those who have relatively few aggressive fantasy needs; 2) Ss whose TAT stories included a great deal of punishment press relative to the number of their aggressive needs demonstrate less overt aggression than Ss whose ratios of punishment press to aggressive needs are low; and 3) Those with low punishment press/aggressive fantasy ratio show more aggression in their behavior than those with high P/A ratio. Simultaneous release of sulfide with Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn in marine harbour sediment measured using a combined metal/sulfide DGT probe

The technique of DGT (Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films) was further developed to allow simultaneous measurement of sulfide and trace metals at the same location in sediment. The new combined DGT probe consisted of a layer of gel impregnated with AgI, overlain by (1) a layer of gel containing Chelex, (2) a layer of gel and (3) a filter membrane. Diffusion of sulfide was controlled by layers (1) to (3), while diffusion of metals was controlled by layers (2) and (3). The Chelex gel trapped metals that were measured after elution with acid. The AgI gel trapped sulfide through the formation of Ag2S. This was then measured densitometrically as the colour changed from pale yellow to grey. Experiments demonstrated that concentrations of metal or sulfide measured by the combined device were no different to the concentrations measured by more conventional devices. The presence of Chelex in the gel did not impede the diffusion of sulfide. Deployment of a combined probe in marine sediment revealed simultaneous remobilisation of metals and sulfide at the same location. Solubility calculations indicated that some precipitation of amorphous FeS was probably occurring at the maxima in sulfide concentrations. There was general undersaturation with respect to NiS, but ZnS was supersaturated at all locations. There appeared to be localised active zones of organic matter decomposition, where reduction of manganese oxides, iron oxides and sulfate occurred simultaneously. Mass balance calculations indicated that Ni could not be supplied by release from decomposing organic matter. Manganese oxides were the most likely source, but supply from reductive dissolution of iron oxides could not be entirely discounted. Supply from either Fe or Mn oxides could account for the Zn maxima. Application of the newly developed combined probe provides new information that helps understanding of the complex nature of trace metal and sulfur chemistry in sediments.     

Randomized prospective trial comparing 5-fluorouracil (NSC-19893) to 5-fluorouracil and methyl-CCNU (NSC-95441) in advanced gastrointestinal cancer

The Southwest Oncology Group has confirmed the superiority of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and methyl-CCNU versus 5-FU weekly as treatment for patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancers. The drug combination produced a PR rate of 29.3% compared to the single-drug arm rate of 10.6%; however, the two-drug arm produced much more toxicity. Despite the improved response rate no improvement in survival was observed.     

The long-term hemodynamic effect of fusaric acid in elderly hypertensive patients

The hemodynamic effect of fusaric acid calcium salt (calcium salt of 5-butylpicolinic acid), an inhibitor of dopamine beta-hydroxylase, was studied in long-term administration of this agent in 10 elderly hypertensive patients. The hemodynamic items were measured by dye-dilution method before and 3 months, 6 months and one year after administration of fusaric acid calcium salt. The main hemodynamic changes observed were as follows: 1) Heart rate did not show any consistent change. 2) Systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure decreased. The mean values of these pressures after fusaric acid calcium salt administration were significantly lower than the mean values before administration of this agent. 3) Total peripheral vascular resistance index decreased. The mean values of this index at 3 months, 6 months and one year after fusic acid calcium salt administration were significantly lower than the mean value before administration of this agent. 4) Cardiac index showed various changes throughout administration of fusaric acid calcium salt. The changes in this index might be secondary following the changes in total peripheral vascular resistance index, an inverse correlation being existed between them. 5) Stroke volume index showed almost a similar pattern of change as observed in cardiac index. An inhibitory action of fusaric acid calcium salt on the inotropism of the heart could be hardly found. 6) Plasma volume showed no tangible changes after fusaric acid calcium salt administration throughout one year. It might be concluded that fusaric acid calcium salt elicited the hypotensive response primarily through the reduction of total peripheral vascular resistance index.
