A flux monitor diode is being explored as an option for measurement of the output of an X-ray tube that is used for active transmission measurements on a pipe containing UF6 gas. The measured flux can be used to correct for any instabilities in the X-ray tube or the high voltage power supply. For this measurement, we are using a silicon junction p-n photodiode, model AXUV100GX, developed by International Radiation Detectors, Inc. (IRD, Inc.). This diode has a silicon thickness of 104 μ and a thin (3-7 nm) silicon dioxide junction passivating, protective entrance window. These diodes have been extensively tested for radiation hardness in the UV range. However, we intend to operate mainly in the 10-40 keV X-ray region. We are performing radiation hardness testing over this energy range, with the energy spectrum that would pass through the diode during normal operation. A long-term measurement was performed at a high flux, which simulated over 80 years of operation. No significant degradation was seen over this time. Fluctuations were found to be within the 0.1% operationally acceptable error range. After irradiation, an I-V characterization showed a temporary irradiation effect which decayed over time. This effect is small because we operate the diode without external bias.  相似文献

The objective of the current investigation is to characterize the dynamic strain aging (DSA) behavior in alloys 800H and 690. Constant extension rate tests were conducted at strain rates in the range of 10?4 s?1 to 10?7?s?1and temperatures between 295?K and 673?K (22?°C and 400?°C), in an argon atmosphere. Maps for the occurrence of serrated flow as a function of strain rate and temperature were built for both alloys. The enthalpy of serrated flow appearance of alloy 800H was found to be 1.07?±?0.30?eV.  相似文献

A sol–gel preparation of Ga-doped phosphate-based glass with potential application in antimicrobial devices has been developed. Samples of composition (CaO)0.30(Na2O)0.20−x (Ga2O3) x (P2O5)0.50 where x = 0 and 0.03 were prepared, and the structure and properties of the gallium-doped sample compared with those of the sample containing no gallium. Analysis of the 31P MAS NMR data demonstrated that addition of gallium to the sol–gel reaction increases the connectivity of the phosphate network at the expense of hydroxyl groups. This premise is supported by the results of the elemental analysis, which showed that the gallium-free sample contains significantly more hydrogen and by FTIR spectroscopy, which revealed a higher concentration of –OH groups in that sample. Ga K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray absorption near-edge structure data revealed that the gallium ions are coordinated by six oxygen atoms. In agreement with the X-ray absorption data, the high-energy XRD results also suggest that the Ga3+ ions are octahedrally coordinated with respect to oxygen. Antimicrobial studies demonstrated that the sample containing Ga3+ ions had significant activity against Staphylococcus aureus compared to the control.  相似文献

Synthesis and characterization of copolymer obtained by grafting acrylamide onto hydrolyzed potato starch and its application in cotton yarn sizing were presented in this work. Some process parameters of starch hydrolysis and grafting, like as hydrolysis yield, grafting yield, grafting percentage, graft efficiency, and monomer to polymer conversion were determinated. Molar mass values of hydrolyzed starch and copolymer samples are located in a narrow range of 1 × 105 to 1 × 107 and 1 × 102 to 1 × 104. Grafted hydrolyzed starch, as a sizing agent, gives better results than nongrafted, particularly in terms of sizing uniformity, yarn mechanical parameters, and easier removal in subsequent desizing process.  相似文献

Early stages of insulin aggregation, which involve the transient formation of oligomeric aggregates, are an important aspect in the progression of Type II diabetes and in the quality control of pharmaceutical insulin production. This study is the first to utilize capillary electrophoresis (CE) with ultraviolet (UV) detection to monitor insulin oligomer formation at pH 8.0 and physiological ionic strength. The lag time to formation of the first detected species in the aggregation process was evaluated by UV-CE and thioflavin T (ThT) binding for salt concentrations from 100 mM to 250 mM. UV-CE had a significantly shorter (5-8 h) lag time than ThT binding (15-19 h). In addition, the lag time to detection of the first aggregated species via UV-CE was unaffected by salt concentration, while a trend toward an increased lag time with increased salt concentration was observed with ThT binding. This result indicates that solution ionic strength impacts early stages of aggregation and β-sheet aggregate formation differently. To observe whether CE may be applied for the analysis of biological samples containing low insulin concentrations, the limit of detection using UV and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) detection modes was determined. The limit of detection using LIF-CE, 48.4 pM, was lower than the physiological insulin concentration, verifying the utility of this technique for monitoring biological samples. LIF-CE was subsequently used to analyze the time course for fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled insulin oligomer formation. This study is the first to report that the FITC label prevented incorporation of insulin into oligomers, cautioning against the use of this fluorescent label as a tag for following early stages of insulin aggregation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine the causes of an outbreak of lobar pneumonia. DESIGN: Matched (1:2) case-control study. SETTING: A 70-bed chronic care facility for older people. PARTICIPANTS: Residents of the facility. RESULTS: Ten residents developed pneumonia over a 10-day period. Two residents died. One case-patient had Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteremia; another had polymerase chain reaction evidence of S. pneumoniae infection. No other etiologic agent was identified. Only four of 10 case-patients had received routine diagnostic cultures of blood or sputum before the administration of antibiotics. Symptoms of upper respiratory illness (URI) among residents before the pneumonia outbreak corresponded with elevation of antibodies to human parainfluenza virus 1 (HPIV1). In a matched case-control study, six of 10 case-patients, compared with five of 20 controls, had symptoms of URI during the preceding month (matched odds ratio (MOR) = 4.5, 95% CI = 0.8-33). Nine case-patients had serum available, and five of these had both serologic evidence of recent HPIV1 infection and recent URI, compared with two of 18 controls (MOR = 9.0, 95% CI = 1.2-208). Only three residents had documentation of pneumococcal vaccination. CONCLUSIONS: Noninfluenza viral infections may play a role in the pathogenesis of some bacterial pneumonias. S. pneumoniae was the cause of at least two pneumonias; lack of preantibiotic cultures may have interfered with isolation of S. pneumoniae in others. Recent HPIV1 infection was epidemiologically linked to subsequently developing pneumonia. Spread of HPIV1 in the facility may have contributed to increased susceptibility to S. pneumoniae and, potentially, to other bacterial pathogens.  相似文献

The molecular signaling events by which leptin exerts its functions in vivo are not well delineated. Here, we show a novel leptin signaling mechanism that requires phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase)-dependent activation of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase 3B (PDE3B) and subsequent suppression of cAMP levels. In pancreatic beta cells, leptin causes the activation of PDE3B, which leads to marked inhibition of glucagon-like peptide-1-stimulated insulin secretion. The effect of leptin is abolished when insulin secretion is induced with cAMP analogues that cannot be hydrolyzed by PDE3B. Selective inhibitors of PDE3B and PI 3-kinase completely prevent the leptin effect on insulin secretion and cAMP accumulation. The results demonstrate that one of the physiological effects of leptin, suppression of insulin secretion, is mediated through activation of PDE3B and suggest PDE3B as a mediator of leptin action in other tissues.  相似文献

Both the discovery of the DYT1 gene on chromosome 9q34 in autosomal dominant early-onset torsion dystonia and the detection of linkage for one form of adult-onset focal dystonia to chromosome 18p (DYT7) in a family from northern Germany provide the opportunity to further investigate genetic factors in the focal dystonias. Additionally, reports of linkage disequilibrium between several chromosome 18 markers and focal dystonia, both in sporadic patients from northern Germany and in members of affected families from central Europe suggest the existence of a founder mutation underlying focal dystonia in this population. To evaluate the role of these loci in focal dystonia, we tested 85 patients from northern Germany who had primary focal dystonia, both for the GAG deletion in the DYT1 gene on chromosome 9q34 and for linkage disequilibrium at the chromosome 18p markers D18S1105, D18S1098, D18S481, and D18S54. None of these patients had the GAG deletion in the DYT1 gene. Furthermore, Hardy-Weinberg analysis of markers on 18p in our patient population and in 85 control subjects from the same region did not support linkage disequilibrium. Taken together, these results suggest that most cases of focal dystonia in patients of northern German or central European origin are due neither to the GAG deletion in DYT1 nor to a proposed founder mutation on chromosome 18p but must be caused by other genetic or environmental factors.  相似文献

This study evaluates the performance of boys with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF) taking into consideration familiality and comorbid psychiatric and learning disorders (LD). Sixty-five children with ADHD performed at developmentally lower levels of Copy Organization and Recall Style than did 45 controls. ADHD children with LD scored significantly lower on Copy Organization than did ADHD children without LD, whereas psychiatric comorbidity and familiality had no effect. These results suggest that a developmental analysis of the ROCF identifies organizational difficulties associated with ADHD and that these impairments cannot simply be attributed to comorbidities associated with ADHD.  相似文献

The precise measurement of low numbers of leukocyte below 0.1 WBC/microliter in filtered red cell or platelet suspensions meet both aims: to check the compliance with previously determined requirements and to evaluate the performances of novel filtering material (5 log depletion or more), justified by more and more important clinical use. The reliability of results, obtained with the chosen method, is ensured by applying of validation protocol, including training of technologist, assessment of the analytical range and the detection limit, assessment of precision and accuracy. The flow cytometry (FC) and Nageotte Chamber (NC) method are the both techniques which are currently used in routine Quality Control (QC) and validated by multicenter studies. Recent developments are made for increasing the sensibility of these counting methods, thanks to higher concentration or volume of the sample to be analysed. Among the experimental techniques, requiring more advances before implementing in QC program, quantitative PCR must become essential as reference method for evaluating the efficiency of filtration, in the future.  相似文献
