Antigenic variants of Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi AS and the effects of mosquito transmission

Previous results, using a passive transfer assay, have shown that recrudescences of Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi AS strain are antigenically different from the infecting parental population and also that the recrudescence appears to be a mix of antigenic types. This present study examines further these recrudescent populations using an indirect fluorescent antibody test on live, schizont-infected red blood cells. This analysis shows that ten clones derived from a recrudescence are all antigenically different from the parent population and that some are different from each other. The use of this method to examine the antigenic types of recrudescent clones after transmission through mosquitoes also demonstrates a resulting change in antigenicity. Such results showing a link between mosquito transmission and varying antigenicity may have important implications in terms of immunity and vaccine development.     

T cell response to two immunodominant proteolipid protein (PLP) peptides in multiple sclerosis patients and healthy controls

Despite the fact that the neuroleptic drugs have been widely used for more than 40 years, one of their most common side-effects, akathisia, has been relatively neglected. There are still no universally agreed diagnostic criteria for akathisia, particularly chronic akathisia, and in this review article, we discuss the controversies surrounding the voluntary nature of its motor features and the importance of the dysphoric component. We also review the published epidemiological studies to show the great variation in frequency of occurrence. Finally, we discuss the possible neurotransmitters involved in the pathophysiology and treatment of this condition.     

Age, working memory, and on-line syntactic processing in sentence comprehension.

One hundred twenty-seven individuals who ranged in age from18 to 90 years were tested on a reading span test and on measures of on-line and off-line sentence processing efficiency. Older participants had reduced working-memory spans compared with younger participants. The on-line measures were sensitive to local increases in processing load, and the off-line measures were sensitive to the syntactic complexity of the sentences. Older and younger participants showed similar effects of syntactic complexity on the on-line measures. There was some evidence that older participants were more affected than younger participants by syntactic complexity on the off-line measures. The results support the hypothesis that on-line processes involved in recognizing linguistic forms and determining the literal, preferred, discourse-coherent meaning of sentences constitute a domain of language processing that relies on its own processing resource or working-memory system. Determinants of perceived social support: Interpersonal transactions, personal outlook, and transient affective states.

During the last decade, the study of social support has relied heavily on recipients' reports of perceived support. However, such reports of support may reflect not only actual supportive interpersonal transactions but also the recipients' own personal and perceptual dispositions and comparatively transient mood states. This study examines these factors' independent effects on perceived support. Interpersonal transactions of social support were assessed in a longitudinal panel design using reports from 486 adult male respondents and their significant others (mostly wives). Using structural modeling techniques ({lisrel vi}), an unfolding series of statistical analyses were performed. The results provide strong support for a model in which recipients' perception of support is determined significantly and strongly by actual interpersonal transactions as reported by significant others, moderately by the recipients' negative outlook bias, and weakly by their anxiety and depression as indicators of their poor mental health. Visualizing performance debugging

The authors examine a special software development environment called the Parallel Programming and Instrumentation Environment (PIE). PIE is designed to develop performance-efficient parallel and sequential computations. Following an explanation of PIE's general theory and features, PIE's visualization tools are used to isolate and repair the parallelism problem of an eight-process computation. Two more difficult examples using PIE are discussed. Some of the issues involved in correctly presenting visual information, such as the features users ask for and what can be done about a performance monitor's perturbation of computations, are addressed
