Point counting represents a convenient and efficient technique for estimating the area of transects through multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions on magnetic resonance (MR) images obtained for sections through the brain. When sectioning has been performed according to the Cavalieri method, unbiased estimates of the total volume of MR-visible MS plaques can be obtained with a precision of 3–5% in 5–10 min.  相似文献

The phase partitioning of additives in polymer blends has a large impact on the performance of the blend. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to quantify the level of the additives in each phase. A 1H–NMR method is presented to determine the partitioning of additives between the rubber and rigid phases of a high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS) material. In one case, a HIPS material was modified with 2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methyl‐phenol (Ionol, CAS# 128‐37‐OMF) as a stabilizer for both phases. HIPS materials with varying levels of Ionol were melt‐blended by extrusion and the total level of additives was determined analytically for these standard materials. The 1H–NMR method was used to determine the level of Ionol in the poly(butadiene) rubber phase. The Ionol was found to preferentially partition into the rubber phase with a partition coefficient of about 2. A second example of the same concept, instead utilizing 13C–NMR, involved the analysis of the partition coefficient for both Tinuvin P and Tinuvin 770 (CAS# 2440‐22‐4 and 52829‐07‐9), partitioning between the rigid and rubber phases of an ethylene–propylene–diene‐modified (EPDM) toughened styrene–ran–acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer. For the development of silicon carbide (SiC) materials for next-generation nuclear structural applications, degradation of material properties under intense neutron irradiation is a critical feasibility issue. This study evaluated the mechanical properties and microstructure of a chemical vapor infiltrated SiC matrix composite, reinforced with a multi-layer SiC/pyrolytic carbon–coated Hi-NicalonTM Type S SiC fiber, following neutron irradiation at 319 and 629?°C to ~100 displacements per atom. Both the proportional limit stress and ultimate flexural strength were significantly degraded as a result of irradiation at both temperatures. After irradiation at 319?°C, the quasi-ductile fracture behavior of the nonirradiated composite became brittle, a result that was explained by a loss of functionality of the fiber/matrix interface associated with the disappearance of the interphase due to irradiation. The specimens irradiated at 629?°C showed increased apparent failure strain because the fiber/matrix interphase was weakened by irradiation-induced partial debonding.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: One-dimensional pure zinc oxide (ZnO) and Y-doped ZnO nanorod arrays have been successfully fabricated on the silicon substrate for comparison by a simple hydrothermal process at the low temperature of 90°C. The Y-doped nanorods exhibit the same c-axis-oriented wurtzite hexagonal structure as pure ZnO nanorods. Based on the results of photoluminescence, an enhancement of defect-induced green-yellow visible emission is observed for the Y-doped ZnO nanorods. The decrease of E2(H) mode intensity and increase of E1(LO) mode intensity examined by the Raman spectrum also indicate the increase of defects for the Y-doped ZnO nanorods. As compared to pure ZnO nanorods, Y-doped ZnO nanorods show a remarked increase of saturation magnetization. The combination of visible photoluminescence and ferromagnetism measurement results indicates the increase of oxygen defects due to the Y doping which plays a crucial role in the optical and magnetic performances of the ZnO nanorods.  相似文献

Na promoted Pt/TiO2 catalysts have been studied under high severity, near equilibrium, conditions for use as a single stage WGS catalyst. Addition of 3 wt% Na to a 1 wt% Pt/TiO2 catalyst has been found to improve water gas shift activity significantly compared to Pt/TiO2, Pt/CeO2, and Pt–Re/TiO2 catalysts. This catalyst is stable when the reaction temperature is higher than 250 °C. Deactivation occurred when the reaction temperature was lower than 250 °C, however, returning the temperature to higher than 250 °C fully recovered activity. TEM observations revealed that addition of Na inhibited Pt particle sintering. These results suggest that Na promoted Pt/TiO2 is a promising single stage water gas shift catalyst for small scale hydrogen production.  相似文献

Using a newly developed object-oriented finite-element analysis method, both an actual microstructure and model microstructures of a plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coating system were numerically simulated to analyze the full-field residual stresses of this coating system. Residual stresses in the actual microstructure were influenced by both the irregular top-coat/bond-coat interface and cracks in the top coat. By treating the microcracked top coat as a more-compliant solid microstructure, the effects of the irregular interface on residual stresses were examined. These results then could be compared to results that have been obtained by analyzing a model microstructure with a sinusoidal interface, which has been considered by some earlier investigators.  相似文献

Circular cylindrical shells made of anisotropic plastic material and filled with an incompressible fluid are subjected to a ring of load which is centrally located. The anisotropic material is a model of a composite material consisting of a ductile matrix reinforced either circumferentially or longitudinally with ductile fibers. Limit loads for all sizes of shell are obtained and their dependence on the degree of reinforcement is determined. The presence of the fluid considerably increases the limit loads over those for unfilled shells. The limitation due to finite transverse shearing stress is considered and is shown to have a significant effect on the strength of such structures.  相似文献

Hepatotoxic microcystins (MCs) produced by cyanobacteria are known to accumulate in gastropods following grazing of toxic cyanobacteria and/or absorption of MCs dissolved in water, with adverse effects on life history traits demonstrated in the laboratory. In the field, such effects may vary depending on species, according to their relative sensitivity and ecology. The aims of this study were to i) establish how various intensities of MC-producing cyanobacteria proliferations alter the structure of gastropod community and ii) compare MC tissue concentration in gastropods in the field with those obtained in our previous laboratory experiments on the prosobranch Potamopyrgus antipodarum and the pulmonate Lymnaea stagnalis. We explored these questions through a one-year field study at three stations at Grand-Lieu Lake (France) affected by different intensities of cyanobacteria proliferations. A survey of the community structure and MC content of both cyanobacteria and gastropods was associated with a caging experiment involving P. antipodarum and L. stagnalis. In total, 2592 gastropods belonging to 7 prosobranch and 16 pulmonate species were collected. However, distribution among the stations was unequal with 62% vs 2% of gastropods sampled respectively at the stations with the lowest vs highest concentrations of MC. Irrespective of the station, pulmonates were always more diverse, more abundant and occurred at higher frequencies than prosobranchs. Only the pulmonate Physa acuta occurred at all stations, with abundance and MC tissue concentration (≤ 4.32 µg g DW− 1) depending on the degrees of MC-producing cyanobacteria proliferations in the stations; therefore, P. acuta is proposed as a potential sentinel species. The caging experiment demonstrated a higher MC accumulation in L. stagnalis (≤ 0.36 µg g DW− 1 for 71% of individuals) than in P. antipodarum (≤ 0.02 µg g DW− 1 for 12%), corroborating previous laboratory observations. Results are discussed in terms of differential gastropod sensitivity and MC transfer through the food web.  相似文献

This article takes up Bennett and Iyengar's (2008) call for debate about the future of political communication effects research. We outline 4 key criticisms. First, Bennett and Iyengar are too quick to dismiss the importance of attitude reinforcement, long recognized as an important type of political media influence. Second, the authors take too narrow a view of the sources of political information, remaining fixated on news. Third, they offer an incomplete portrayal of selective exposure, exaggerating the extent to which individuals avoid attitude-discrepant information. Finally, they lean toward determinism when describing the role technologies play in shaping our political environment. In addition, we challenge Bennett and Iyengar's assertion that only brand new theory can serve to help researchers understand today's political communication landscape. We argue that existing tools, notably the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), retain much utility for examining political media effects. Contrary to Bennett and Iyengar's claims, the ELM suggests that the contemporary political information environment does not necessarily lead to minimal effects.  相似文献
