The cytotoxic and antibacterial properties of nC 60, a buckminsterfullerene water suspension, have been attributed to photocatalytically generated reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, in this work, neither ROS production nor ROS-mediated damage is found in nC 60-exposed bacteria. Furthermore, the colorimetric methods used to evaluate ROS production and damage are confounded by interactions between nC 60 and the reagents, yielding false positives. Instead, we propose that nC 60 exerts ROS-independent oxidative stress, thus reconciling conflicting results in the literature. 相似文献

Murta (Ugni molinae T.) berries were air‐dried at five temperatures (40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C), and the changes in β‐carotene, phenolic acids, total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant capacities (DPPH and ORAC) were investigated. The berries showed a high content of β‐carotene, which decreased during drying temperature between 40 °C and 80 °C. Free and bound phenolic acids were also determined, showing gallic acid to be the prevalent phenolic acid. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the dried berries showed a higher decrease at lower temperature due to longer drying time. The radical‐scavenging activity also showed higher antioxidant activity at higher drying temperatures (70–80 °C) than at lower drying temperatures (40–50 °C). Total phenolic content (TPC) and flavonoids showed good correlation with antioxidant capacity. Murta berries proved to be an excellent source of antioxidants and bioactive compounds and are therefore a potential ingredient for new functional food products. 相似文献

The cochlear implant, consisting of a compliant electrode carrier (ET) and embedded electrodes with contact wires, is an auditory neuroprosthesis, which is surgically inserted into the inner ear (cochlea) in order to create an auditory impression in the hearing-impaired patients. For simplification of the insertion, a fluidically actuated electrode carrier with a changeable curvature is presented. The deformation of the ET is specifically manipulated by applying pressure to its interior and also by a non-stretchable thin fibre or stripe embedded in its wall. An analytical examination of scaling properties allows to use scaled structures for models and measurements. In order to determine the geometry of the ET, a model-based synthesis – FE method combined with analytical modelling – is carried out. The synthesis resulted in a conical shape of the ET with a cylindrical cavity closed at one end and a fiber running parallel to the cavity. Experimental studies on a measuring geometry show a maximum deviation of 0,6 bar at a maximum internal pressure of 6 bar. The investigations show that the proposed synthesis method is suitable for the development of surgical instruments with adjustable curvature. 相似文献

Widespread use of GPS and similar technologies makes it possible to collect extensive amounts of trajectory data. These data sets are essential for reasonable decision making in various application domains. Additional information, such as events taking place along a trajectory, makes data analysis challenging, due to data size and complexity. We present an integrated solution for interactive visual analysis and exploration of events along trajectories data. Our approach supports analysis of event sequences at three different levels of abstraction, namely spatial, temporal, and events themselves. Customized views as well as standard views are combined to form a coordinated multiple views system. In addition to trajectories and events, we include on-the-fly derived data in the analysis. We evaluate our integrated solution using the IEEE VAST 2015 Challenge data set. A successful detection and characterization of malicious activity indicate the usefulness and efficiency of the presented approach. 相似文献

Field assessment of lead immobilization in a contaminated soil after phosphate application 总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
A pilot-scale field demonstration was conducted at a Pb-contaminated site to assess the effectiveness of Pb immobilization using P amendments. The test site was contaminated by past battery recycling activities, with average soil Pb concentration of 1.16%. Phosphate amendments were applied at a 4.0 molar ratio of P/Pb with three treatments: T1, 100% P from H(3)PO(4); T2, 50% from H(3)PO(4)+50% from Ca(H(2)PO(4))(2); and T3, 50% from H(3)PO(4)+5% phosphate rock. Soil samples were collected and characterized 220 days after P application. Surface soil pH was reduced from 6.45 to 5.05 in T1, to 5.22 in T2, and to 5.71 in T3. Phosphate treatments effectively transformed up to 60% of total soil Pb from the non-residual fraction (sum of water soluble and exchangeable, carbonate, Fe-Mn oxide, and organic fractions) to the residual fraction relative to the control. In addition, P treatments reduced Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) Pb from 82 mg l(-1) to below EPA's regulatory level of 5 mg l(-1) in the surface soil. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated formation of insoluble chloropyromorphite [Pb(5)(PO(4))(3)Cl] mineral in the P-treated soils. Although H(3)PO(4) is necessary to dissolve meta-stable Pb in soil for further lead immobilization, it should be used with caution due to its potential secondary contamination. A mixture of H(3)PO(4) and Ca(H(2)PO(4))(2) or phosphate rock was effective in immobilizing Pb with minimum adverse impacts associated with pH reduction. 相似文献

Obtaining quantitative data concerning the relative impact of various factors that may influence bacterial growth is of great importance for microbial risk assessment and predictive microbiology. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of the initial Listeria monocytogenes density on all the growth parameters of this pathogen (lag phase duration, growth rate and maximum population density attained) on a sterile solid model system mimicking smoked fishery products, and in real cold-smoked salmon, a product likely to be contaminated with L. monocytogenes. Growth of the pathogen was monitored using a sensitive enumeration method, recently developed, based on membrane filtration followed by the transfer of the filter on a selective media [Gnanou Besse, N., Audinet, N., Beaufort, A., Colin, P., Cornu, M. and Lombard, B., 2004. A contribution to the improvement of Listeria monocytogenes enumeration in smoked salmon. International Journal of Food Microbiology, 91, 119-127.]. Depending on the experimental conditions, we found a significant effect of the inoculum size, both on lag phase duration, and on the maximal population attained. Moreover, the effect of the inoculum size on the growth of L. monocytogenes was dependent on a complex set of interactions. Factors which have appeared to impact on this effect include the cells physiological state, the background microflora, the texture of the media and the packaging system. It is important to understand how these interactions affect the growth of Listeria in order to predict and control its development in food. 相似文献

As a result of the increased wind power penetration, there are increased requirements for robustness of the wind farms during disturbances and faults. The wind farms are required to stay connected during short grid faults, and also, the disturbances as a result of internal faults should be minimized. In this paper, the fault ride‐through properties during external faults for a wind farm with an internal direct current (DC) grid are investigated. A safe detection of the fault is derived, as well as the reconnection procedure after the fault has been cleared. Also, the operation during internal faults has been investigated, focusing on the faults in the DC bus. It has been shown that the wind farm with an internal DC grid can operate through faults in the external grid and reconnect well within the requirements stated in the grid codes. Further, methods for detection of internal faults are derived, and it was shown that a faulted part can be disconnected and the non‐faulted parts can be back in operation within 100 ms using a DC breaker in each radial and within 300 ms without DC breakers. The limit of detection of low-molecular weight compounds in tissue sections, analyzed by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI), was significantly improved by employing sample washing using a pH-controlled buffer solution. The pH of the washing solutions were set at values whereby the target analytes would have low solubility. Washing the tissue sections in the buffered solution resulted in removal of endogenous soluble ionization-suppressing compounds and salts, while the target compound remained in situ with minor or no delocalization during the buffered washing procedure. Two pharmaceutical compounds (cimetidine and imipramine) and one new protease inhibitor compound were successfully used to evaluate the feasibility of the pH-controlled tissue washing protocol for MALDI-MSI. Enhancement in signal-to-noise ratio was achieved by a factor of up to 10. 相似文献

The thousand-fold increase in data-collection speed enabled by aberration-corrected optics allows us to overcome an electron microscopy paradox: how to obtain atomic-resolution chemical structure in individual nanoparticles yet record a statistically significant sample from an inhomogeneous population.
