In this study, lightweight 100% cotton fabric was successfully modified by the sol–gel process to impart high ultraviolet radiation (UVR) scattering property to the fabric surface. Active ingredients were tetraethyl orthotitanate [Ti(OCH2CH3)4] and tetraethyl orthosilicate [Si(OCH2CH3)4]. The cotton fabric was padded with the nanosol solution, dried at 60°C, and cured at 150°C. Scanning electron microscopy showed continuous and uniform film on the fiber surface. Excellent UVR scattering was obtained with all treated fabrics. Increasing titania content in the nanosol solution leads to increased UVR protection. This is attributed to the increase of the refractive index of the film formed on the fabric surface. Excellent durability of the treatment was obtained, which indicates a good adhesion between the coating and the fabric surface. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract— Previous research has shown that the size of the LDL macromolecules can have an effect on cardiovascular health and that LDL macromolecules may be non‐spherical in shape. Some of these studies, however, used methods that are not conducive to automatic determination of the 3‐D parameters of the particles. In particular, the prior methods used for determination of geometric‐parameter determination were either centrifugal separations or manual determination of parameters from cryogenic transmission electron micrographs. An application of computer‐vision techniques to automatically determine the 3‐D parameters from cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) images will be described. Correlation of computer‐generated geometric models to the orthonormal projection CTEM imagery were investigated to determine the applicability of finding the pertinent geometric parameters of the expected discoid shape of the LDL particles. The processing showed that the discoid shape can be verified using small‐angle rotations that are more amenable to the limitations of CTEM imaging.  相似文献

Examined an intervention to improve the patient's contribution to communication in a medical office visit. In Study 1, 53 women awaiting a medical appointment were assigned either to a group that was asked to list 3 questions to ask their physician or to a control group. Ss who listed questions asked more questions in the visit and reported being less anxious. In Study 2, with 49 women, a 3rd group received a message from their physician encouraging question asking. Both experimental groups asked more of the questions they had wished to, had greater feelings of control, and were more satisfied with the visit and with the information they received.
