Generalized Vlasov-Jones foundation model: A foundation of grade 4

A generalization of the Vlasov-Jones continuum approximation to an isotropic, linearly elastic foundation is presented. The generalization is achieved by not requiring that displacement components parallel to the foundation surface vanish. It is found that the new model is a foundation of grade 4 whereas the Vlasov-Jones model is a foundation of grade 2. The boundary value problem for the interaction of a classical, thin plate and a generalized Vlasov-Jones foundation is formulated and found to be of an unusual, nonlinear type. A procedure is proposed for the approximate solution of this boundary value problem. There is some discussion of the dependence of the foundation moduli, or parameters, on the applied loading and plate as well as the implications of this dependence for foundation models in general.     

Plasma and urinary catecholamines during the human ovulatory cycle

We measured plasma catecholamine concentrations and urinary catecholamine excretion during the ovulatory cycle in six healthy women. Plasma norepinephrine was consistently at its lowest during the follicular phase of the cycle. Plasma norepinephrine began to increase about 2 days before ovulation and continued to increase after ovulation, so that the average luteal phase NE concentration was significantly higher than the average follicular phase concentration (217 versus 143 pg/ml, p less than 0.001). Urinary norepinephrine excretion showed a similar but attenuated pattern. The results suggest that sympathetic neural activity changes with the phase of the ovulatory cycle. Cyclic patterning of plasma norepinephrine is one of many factors which should be considered in the design and analysis of studies which use plasma norepinephrine as an indicator of sympathetic neural activity in human disease states.     

Transformation kinetics and mechanical properties of Zr-Mo alloys

Alloys containing 1.3, 3.3, 5.4, and 7.5 pct Mo were prepared using high purity molybdenum and sponge zirconium. Time-temperature-transformation curves were established for these alloys based on the resistivity vs time of anneal curves of isothermally quenched rods. Tensile and impact bars of each alloy were heat treated by isothermal quench techniques as well as by quench and reheat treatments. These bars were then machined, tested, and the properties compared. Optimum properties could be developed in the 1.3 pct Mo alloy using the isothermal quench technique. The 3.3, 5.4, and 7.5 pct Mo alloys exhibited a brittle behavior irrespective of type of heat treatment. An ω or transition phase in the β → α transformation was discovered which undoubtedly accounts for most of the brittleness observed. The ω phase has been tentatively indexed as tetragonal, c/a= 1.45. Mechanical properties of unalloyed sponge zirconium are presented for comparison.

The processes of heating and cooling of a metal film evaporated on a dielectric substrate are analyzed. The phonon propagation in the substrate is assumed to be diffusive due to static defect scattering.     

Perception byTrogoderma species of chirality and methyl branching at a site far removed from a functional group in a pheromone component

Responses to enantiomers of (Z)- and (E)-trogodermal (14-methyl-8-hexadecenal) suggest that fourTrogoderma species utilize the (R)-(–) configuration at C-14. Removal of the C-14 methyl branch decreased the response. These results demonstrate the high specificity associated with the configuration at a chiral center, or the methyl branch, distant in terms of numbers of bonds from a functional group.Coleoptera: Dermestidae.     

The impact of national health insurance on the tasks and practice of psychiatry

Psychiatry, like all professions, is strongly affected by changes in societal expectations and economic forces. Changes in professional priorities and patterns of patient care will undoubtedly be brought about by national health insurance. Two major types of national health insurance have been proposed: comprehensive health insurance and catastrophic insurance. We do not anticipate major impact on psychiatric tasks from some form of catastrophic insurance. Comprehensive health insurance would shape and change psychiatric practice. An examination of psychiatric tasks provides a framework for anticipating alterations in practice. We identify four major task areas in psychiatry: (1) medical tasks, (2) reparative tasks, (3) social control tasks, and (4) humanistic tasks. These tasks would be differentially influenced. Psychiatry's medical tasks will be stressed, while funding for many reparative tasks may be limited. The care of the severely ill patient may be fragmented because of problems in integrating medical and rehabilitative services.
