Exterior stable domain segmentation integral equation method for scattering problems

This paper is concerned with the development of an exterior domain segmentation method for the solution of two- or three-dimensional time-harmonic scattering problems in acoustic media. This method, based on a variational localized, symmetric, boundary integral equation formulation leads, upon discretization, to a sparse system of algebraic equations whose solution requires only O(N) multiplications, where N is the number of unknown nodal pressures on the scatterer surface. The new procedure is analogous to the one developed recently¹ except that in the present formulation we avoid completely the use of the hypersingular operator, thereby reducing the computational complexity. Numerical experiments for a rigid circular cylindrical scatterer subjected to a plane incident wave serve to assess its accuracy for normalized wave numbers, ka, ranging from 0 to 30, both directly on the scatterer and in the far field, and to confirm that, contrary to standard boundary integral equation formulations, the present procedure is valid for critical frequencies.

Microstructure study of Sm,Mn-modified PbTiO3 piezoelectric ceramics by XRD profile-fitting technique

By using the X-ray diffraction profile-fitting technique, the microstructures of Sm, Mn-modified PbTiO₃ piezoelectric ceramic discs, including ferroelectric domain sizes, microstrains, and their variations with the poling strength have been quantitatively investigated. The results manifest that the modified PbTiO₃ ceramics contain a high density of domain walls due to the presence of finely-divided coherent domain structures (tens of nanometres in dimension). The poling treament can evidently influence the domain-size distribution, with a more homogeneous microstructure being developed; however, it simultaneously causes high anisotropic microstrains within the structure which, together with the high density of domain walls, is expected to be responsible for the unusual high electromechanical coupling properties possessed by this material.

Analysis of simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) subgenomic RNAs, junction sequences, and 5' leader

Full-length simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) genome RNA (about 15 kb in length) and six subgenomic RNAs, ranging in size from 0.65 to 4.7 kb, were detected by Northern blot hybridization in MA104 cytoplasmic extracts with a 3' genomic antisense probe. The 5' regions of the two smallest subgenomic RNAs (RNAs 6 and 7) were cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis indicated that these two RNAs contained a common 5' leader sequence joined to the subgenomic RNA bodies via a highly conserved junction sequence; the junction sequence of RNA 7 was 5'-TTAACC-3', while that of RNA 6 was 5'-TCAACC-3'. The complete 5' leader sequence (208 nt) was obtained from genomic RNA. The genomic 5' junction sequence is identical to that of RNA 7. Northern blot hybridization with an antisense 5' leader probe confirmed the presence of the complete leader sequence in all six species of subgenomic RNA. In its virion morphology, genome size, gene order, and replication strategy, SHFV is most similar to viruses such as equine arteritis virus, lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus, and Lelystad virus/porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus.
