Fermentative herbivorous animals have peculiar conformations of the digestive system. It is known that B. variegatus obtained the capacity for evolutionary adaptation, due to their ecology and eating habits. However, despite the literature on feeding management for this species, there is a lack of published information regarding its gastric morphology, and such information would support a better understanding on the diet and digestion of these individuals. We found seven gastric compartments, which histologically revealed three distinct patterns: an aglandular keratinized fraction (mechanical stomach) and two glandular fractions, one a mucus secretor and the other one composed of acid secreting cells (chemical stomach). With these evidences we understand that these individuals have gastric resemblance to ruminants, with some inherent peculiarities of this species, including the transit of the bolus.  相似文献

A field evaluation of a decision support system prototype is described. The system is designed to aid the decision making of laser safety hazard assessors and laser manufacturers. The aims of the evaluation were to establish the usefulness and usability of the system, and to indicate where design changes might be needed. Three complementary methods namely observation evaluation, expert evaluation, and survey evaluation were used. Fifteen laser safety hazard assessors took part in the evaluation as subjects. Objective and subjective data were analysed and areas of user difficulty with the system were identified. The system was well-received although some pointers to modification for the eventual delivery system were identified. It is concluded that the aims of the evaluation were successfully met.  相似文献

Trypanothione reductase (TR) is an essential enzyme in the trypanothione-based redox metabolism of trypanosomatid parasites. This system is absent in humans and, therefore, offers a promising target for the development of selective new drugs against African sleeping sickness and Chagas' disease. Over the past two decades, a variety of nonpeptidic small-molecule ligands of the parasitic enzyme were discovered. A current goal is to decipher the binding mode of these known inhibitors in order to optimize their structures. We analyzed the binding mode of recently reported 1-(1-(benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)cyclohexyl)piperidine (BTCP) analogues using computer modeling methods. This led us to conclude that the analogues occupy a different region of the active site than the diaryl sulfide-based class of inhibitors. A combination of the two motifs significantly increased affinity for the enzyme compared to the respective parent compounds. The newly synthesized conjugates exhibit K(ic) values for TR as low as 0.51±0.1?μM and high selectivity for the parasitic enzyme over the related human glutathione reductase (hGR), as was predicted by our molecular modeling studies. In vitro studies showed IC(50) values in the low micromolar to submicromolar range against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, often in combination with low cytotoxicity against mammalian cells. Interestingly, even stronger activities were found against Plasmodium falciparum.  相似文献

Fast and reliable signal sense and signature code synchronization for direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) signals are key issues in the design of the receiver for modern packet code-division multiple-access (CDMA) radio networks for mobile communications; this motivates the study of the signal recognition and code-acquisition (SR/CA) scheme we describe in this paper. Specifically, starting from elementary estimation and detection theory criteria, we work out a noncoherent parallel SR/CA algorithm that is suited to a full-digital implementation in a single application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The results of a theoretical analysis of such a scheme, encompassing additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multiple-access interference (MAI), are integrated and validated by an overall time-domain system simulation. We also evaluate through a simplified approach the impact of some degradation factors on the overall circuit performance, namely, sampling epoch and carrier frequency offset and 1-b signal quantization, to allow optimization of the design parameters as a function of the characteristics of the received signal  相似文献

A novel equalization/detection algorithm for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals transmitted over frequency-selective channels is introduced and investigated. The algorithm stems from the recognition that the Fourier transform processing inherent in OFDM turns a single wideband frequency-selective channel into a set of correlated narrowband frequency-flat fading channels. This suggests that sequence detection techniques, such as those discussed by Vitetta et al. (see IEEE Trans. Commun., vol.43, p.2750-8, 1995, IEEE Trans. Commun., vol.43, pt.II, p.1256-9, 1995, and Proc. IEEE Commun. Theory Mini-Conf (Globecom '96), London, UK, p.153-7, 1996), for time-selective flat-fading channels, can be also profitably utilized for joint equalization and decoding of OFDM signals in the frequency domain. Simulation results show that the proposed detection strategy, implemented via a standard Viterbi algorithm, provides improved performance over differential detection, with a moderate increase in receiver complexity and without requiring the periodic transmission of training blocks  相似文献

A pathological increase of the permeability of the mitochondrial membranes may culminate in the irreversible rupture of the mitochondrial outer membrane. Such a permeability transition is lethal because it results in the release of death-inducing molecules from mitochondria and/or metabolic failure. Current methods to assess this outer membrane damage are mostly indirect or scarcely representative of the overall mitochondrial population. Here we present an analytical and preparative approach using free flow electrophoresis to directly distinguish rat liver mitochondria that have undergone the permeability transition from unaffected organelles or from organelles that are damaged to a minor degree. Mitochondrial populations, which considerably differ in outer membrane integrity or cytochrome c content, were separated by this means. We further show that the relative abundance of each population depends on the dose of the permeability transition inducer and the duration of the treatment time. Finally, we have employed this approach to investigate the impairment of mitochondria that were isolated from livers subjected to ischemia/reperfusion damage.  相似文献

The random fluctuations of spins give rise to many interesting physical phenomena, such as the 'order-from-disorder' arising in frustrated magnets and unconventional Cooper pairing in magnetic superconductors. Here we show that the exchange of spin waves between extended topological defects, such as domain walls, can result in novel magnetic states. We report the discovery of an unusual incommensurate phase in the orthoferrite TbFeO(3) using neutron diffraction under an applied magnetic field. The magnetic modulation has a very long period of 340?? at 3?K and exhibits an anomalously large number of higher-order harmonics. These domain walls are formed by Ising-like Tb spins. They interact by exchanging magnons propagating through the Fe magnetic sublattice. The resulting force between the domain walls has a rather long range that determines the period of the incommensurate state and is analogous to the pion-mediated Yukawa interaction between protons and neutrons in nuclei.  相似文献
