EFFECT OF CHLORINATED WASH WATER ON QUALITY OF HEAT SHOCKED MUSSEL MEAT

Chlorine-assisted chilled tumble washing of green mussel meats was done using 5 and 10ppm chlorine solutions maintained at 5 and 10C for 3 min. No significant difference (P < 0.05) was established in terms of meat yield, pH, Aw or sensory qualities for tumble washed samples. The mussel meats were given sensory acceptance ratings of up to "like slightly". A 2% weight gain of mussel meats was established after washing. Heat shocking in tandem with tumble washing affected 1–3 unit log reduction in TPC and coliform counts and about a 4 log reduction in Vibrio spp. counts of mussel meats. The 2 protocols were presented as value-adding steps to improve mussel meat quality. Philippine micro- and small-scale shellfish processors and vendors were identified as potential users of the technology presented in the study.

The visual control of reaching and grasping: Binocular disparity and motion parallax.

The primary visual sources of depth and size information are binocular cues and motion parallax. Here, the authors determine the efficacy of these cues to control prehension by presenting them in isolation from other visual cues. When only binocular cues were available, reaches showed normal scaling of the transport and grasp components with object distance and size. However, when only motion parallax was available, only the transpont component scaled reliably. No additional increase in scaling was found when both cues were available simultaneously. Therefore, although equivalent information is available from binocular and motion parallax information, the latter may be of relatively limited use for the control of the grasp. Mechanisms in damping of mechanical vibration by piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composite materials

The piezoelectric ceramic (piezoceramic) component of a polymer-piezoelectric ceramic composite converts mechanical energy into electrical energy and this electrical energy is dissipated as heat in a load resistance, R _x, simulated by a shunted resistance, but provided in practice by a conductive polymer composite matrix. The composite therefore dissipates the input mechanical energy via the damping mechanism provided by piezoelectric ceramic-conductive matrix material, as well as the conventional viscoelastic damping provided by the polymer. Mathematical models have been developed to characterize the damping behaviour of the composites, and the maximum damping ratio of composites can be as high as 23%. A two degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) experimental setup was developed to test the validity of the models. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

A 10-year-old German shepherd dog presented with a periodontal 10 mm interproximal defect between the left mandibular fourth premolar and first molar teeth. Bone graft removed from the caudoventral portion of the ipsilateral hemimandible was placed in the defect as a component of the periodontal treatment plan. The use of bone graft likely contributed to periodontal pocket reduction.

A competitive enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay (ELISA) technique has been developed to facilitate quantitative analysis of the earliest step in the initiation of the extrinsic pathway of coagulation, i.e., complex formation of factor VII/VIIa with tissue factor. The ELISA measures the binding of biotinylated human plasma factor VII to relipidated recombinant human tissue factor. Quantitation of the relative affinity (expressed as IC50) of any factor VII molecular population or structural analogue for tissue factor can be determined by competitive binding. Subnanomolar concentrations of both wild-type recombinant human factor VII (rFVII) and rFVII(R152Q), a mutation at the FVII activation site, competed effectively with biotinylated plasma-derived factor VII in binding to tissue factor. In contrast, the affinity of rFVII(R79Q), a mutation in the first epidermal growth factor-like domain, was 12-fold lower. Following activation of rFVII(R79Q), its affinity for tissue factor and enzymatic activity increased 4-fold and 6-fold, respectively. For wild-type rFVII, enzymatic activity rose significantly following activation. However, its affinity for tissue factor was unchanged. We conclude that both the activation state of factor VII and the mutation of amino-acid residues within the first epidermal growth factor-like domain may alter the affinity of factor VII for tissue factor.
