Waste green sands are byproducts of the gray iron foundry industry that consist of sand, binding agents, organic carbon, and residual iron particles. Because of their potential sorptive and reactive properties, tests were conducted to determine the feasibility of using waste green sands as a low cost reactive medium for groundwater treatment. Batch and column tests were conducted to determine the reactivity, sorptive characteristics, and transport parameters for trichloroethylene (TCE) solutions in contact with green sands. Normalized rate constants for TCE degradation in the presence of iron particles extracted from green sands were found to be comparable to those for Peerless iron, a common medium used to treat groundwater. Rate constants and partition coefficients obtained from the batch tests were found to be comparable to those from the column tests. Analytical modeling shows that reactive barriers containing green sand potentially can be used to treat contaminated groundwater containing TCE at typical concentrations observed in the field.  相似文献

In the course of investigation of 262 families with non-differentiated forms of oligophrenias it is established that in 48 families (18.3%) mental deficiency in sibs is caused by pathological mutations in the X-chromosome. Besides, it is not excluded that in certain inbred families oligophrenia in female persons is also, due to mutations linked with X-chromosome. This is supported by the dependence established between the frequency of the cases of oligophrenia among female persons and the inbreeding coefficient for the X-linked loci. The possibility of manifestation of the recessive genes of oligophrenia linked with X-chromosomes in heterozygous state is discussed.  相似文献

The major intent of this article was to describe the design principles of the drug-therapy documentation module of the Patient Data Management System (PDMS) ICUData, in routine use at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital of Giessen, Germany, since February 1999. The new drug management system has been in routine use since March 2000. Until 8 January 2001, 1140 patients have been documented using this approach. It could be demonstrated that it was possible to transform the formerly unstructured text-based documentation into a detailed and structured model. The mediated benefit resulted in the automatic calculation of fluid balance. Further, detailed statistical analyses of therapeutic behavior in drug administration are now possible.  相似文献

In this fourth of a series of papers that describe long-term cloud research at the Facility for Atmospheric Remote Sensing at Salt Lake City, Utah, an approximately 10-year record of polarization lidar and photographic observations is analyzed to characterize the occurrence of optical displays in our local varieties of midlatitude cirrus clouds. The frequencies of occurrence of various types of halo, arc, and corona displays are evaluated according to their appearance and longevity over nominal 1-h observation periods and to the meteorological source of the cirrus. We find that complex halo-arc displays are rare at our locale and that even the so-called common 22 degree halo occurs infrequently as a complete long-lived ring. For example, only approximately 6% of the 1561-h daytime cirrus periods have bright and prolonged 22 degree halos, although a total of 37.3% have some indications of this halo, even if they are brief and fragmentary. Other fairly frequent features are the 22 degree upper tangent arc (8.6%), 22 degree parhelia (8.5%), and solar corona (7.2%). Of the optical displays observed, 83.6% are refraction based, only 1.9% are due to reflection phenomena, and a surprising 15.4% are caused by diffraction. Complex halo-arc displays are disproportionally associated with cirrus formed in tropical or subtropical airflow and also contain more horizontally oriented planar ice crystals. Lidar linear depolarization ratios from a subset of vivid displays show significant differences between halo- and the corona-producing cirrus, reflecting the effects of particle shape. Halos are associated with relatively warm cirrus that contain randomly and horizontally oriented planar ice crystals, whereas the colder corona cirrus produce much stronger depolarization from crystals too small to be uniformly oriented. Comparisons are made with available information from other locales, and we attempt to explain the geographical differences in terms of basic cirrus cloud processes.  相似文献

Catalytic effects of carbon sorbents for mercury capture   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Activated carbon sorbents have the potential to be an effective means of mercury control in combustion systems. Reactions of activated carbons in flow systems with mercury and gas stream components were investigated to determine the types of chemical interactions that occur on the sorbent surface. The effects of carbon type, particle size, temperature, and reactive gases were studied. Sorption kinetics and capacities for lignite- and bituminous-based carbons were compared with those for catalytic carbons at temperatures of 107 degrees C, 150 degrees C, and 163 degrees C. In the air and baseline gas studies, the catalytic carbons exhibited far better sorption than the lignite- and bituminous-derived carbons. With the catalytic carbons, the greater sorption kinetics and capacity in an air stream or baseline gas composition compared with nitrogen provides a clear demonstration that O(2) is required in the gas stream for higher reactivities and capacities. Thus, a catalytic chemisorption mechanism predominates for the sorption of mercury at these conditions. The reaction kinetics are inversely proportional to the temperature, indicating that a preliminary physisorption step with mercury associating with a surface site is rate-determining. In synthetic flue gas streams containing HCl (50 ppm), the sorption kinetics of the catalytic carbon are slightly inferior to those of lignite-based carbon. Thus, the reaction is dominated by a different interaction, where HCl reacts with mercury on the carbon surface and the oxidation sites on the catalytic carbon apparently have no advantage. Granular and fine-particle carbons gave similar results in flue gas streams.  相似文献

Thirty-six isolates, from man or swine, of Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida producing (n = 13) or not producing (n = 23) the dermonecrotic toxin (DNT) were studied by numerical analysis, capsular typing and ribotyping. Toxigenic strains were also characterised by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the toxA gene and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Numerical analysis differentiated the Pasteurella species and subspecies, but did not discriminate between toxigenic and nontoxigenic strains. RFLP demonstrated that toxA was located in a conserved part of the chromosome of all toxigenic strains. Ribotyping provided evidence of a close association between DNT production and one of the six EcoRI ribotypes designated as E2. In contrast, PFGE provided evidence for significant DNA polymorphism amongst the toxigenic strains. Results of phenotypic and genotypic studies suggested that toxigenic strains do not form a clone within the subspecies multocida. No difference was found between toxigenic strains of porcine or human origin by biochemical characterisation, capsular serotyping or genomic typing methods.  相似文献
