Field and pot trials were conducted to determine optimum management practices for usingLeucaena leucocephala (Lam. de Wit) leaves as a N source for crop production. Field trials with maize showed no benefit from split application of leucaena leaves or from application of fresh as opposed to dried material. Field trials also failed to show any difference between incorporation as opposed to surface application of leucaena leaves. This may be attributed to the low nitrogen response observed. Pot trials however, showed that soil incorporation of leucaena leaves was more effective than surface application in increasing plant dry weight.Leucaena leaves were not as effective as inorganic N in increasing maize grain yield (field trials) or dry matter production (pot trial). Unlike inorganic N, leucaena leaves had a significant residual effect on the succeeding maize crop. In decomposition studies, buried leucaena leaves decomposed more quickly than surface-applied leaves, and fresh leaves decomposed more rapidly than dried leaves.  相似文献

Steady state inactivation data on dilute aqueous solutions of RNase show that all water radicals, e-aq, OH, and H are responsible for the inactivation, but the most efficient radical is H atom, only about 4 of them being required for one inactivating event. The data are, therefore, more in agreement with the conclusions of Mee et al. (1972). In the transient absorption spectra of pulse irradiated ribonuclease different components derived by the individual radicals are observed. Organic and inorganic selenium-containing compounds offer a great protection of the enzyme activity, in agreement with the data obtained in other chemical and biological systems. In particular the effects of two new secondary radicals (CNSe)-2 and SeO-3 are in good accord with the known structure of ribonuclease.  相似文献

1. Cross-correlation analysis has been used to quantify the responses of cat soleus tendon organs to repetitive twitch contractions of: (a) different motor units within the muscle, (b) single motor units at different muscle lengths, and (c) single motor units when the pulse-train pattern of stimulation delivered to the motor unit axon was altered. 2. Ib afferents were observed which responded to each of several hundred successive motor unit twitches with identical numbers of spikes and with relatively invariant latencies. 3. The present results show that tendon organs are sensitive to subtle alterations in motor unit twitch wave form and amplitude, and that this sensitivity is reflected in the precise timings of their afferent discharge. 4. Examination of these tendon organ responses indicates that the forces produced by single motor units couples to the receptor capsule are well above threshold. Calculations based on these results, and earlier soleus motor unit and muscle fibre data, suggest that the absolute force threshold for tendon organs may be as little as 4 mg, which is less than the estimated minimum twitch force generated by individual soleus muscle fibres. 5. Considering the number of tendon organs in a muscle, and the likelihood that every motor unit is connected with at least one receptor, the sensitivity of tendon organs ensures that every twitch of every motor unit will be reflected in the population of afferent signals projecting to the spinal cord.  相似文献

Intermittent catheterization has become a well-accepted method of management of the neurogenic bladder following spinal cord injury. Frequently, the presence of detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia interferes with the attainment of acceptable residual urine volumes in patients with upper-motor-neuron bladders. We have recently reported success in overcoming the problems of dyssynergia in some patients utilizing a technique called anal sphincter stretch in which relaxation of the external anal and urethral sphincters is produced by sustained distention of the anal sphincter. This has lessened the need for other measures that usually produce incontinence and has met with good patient acceptance. An update on the results of using this technique is presented. Although we have previously encountered quadriplegics who might have benefited from sphincter stretch, the lack of hand intrinsic muscle function required for the patient to perform it independently has precluded its use. We herein present a device that circumvents inadequate hand function, and which has enabled four C-7 quadriplegics to achieve satisfactory bladder emptying.  相似文献

The effect of CDCA feeding on pancreatic and intestinal enzymes was studied. Mice were fed 0.5% w/w chenodeoxycholic acid in a normal diet. Pancreatic lipase concentration was significantly increased after 3 days on the CDCA diet, while amylase and trypsin concentrations were significantly higher at 23 days when compared with the controls. At 70 days there was a significant increase in the concentrations of amylase, trypsin, and lipase. Protein concentrations paralleled the rise in enzyme levels. Amylase and lipase, when measured as specific activities, were still higher than the controls at 70 days. Intestinal amylase levels did not change during the experiments, but intestinal alpha-glucosidase activity increased significantly in the CDCA-treated animals. The results are discussed in terms of their similarity with those reported to occur after feeding soybean trypsin inhibitor.  相似文献

An epidemiological study was conducted to determine the geographical variations in stroke mortality among three U.S. areas. They were Savannah, Georgia (high stroke rates), Hagerstown, Maryland (intermediate stroke rates) and Pueblo, Colorado (low stroke rates). In each area samples were drawn of the population in the 35--54 age group. The subjects were interviewed and examined to obtain the information required on medical conditions and/or living habits which would characterize each area. A brief medical and family history, as well as demographic and personal data, were obtained by interview. The medical examination included blood pressure, ECG, blood and urine chemistry, height and weight. In all three cities the response rate in the final sample selected was 90% (2,375 individuals) interviewed and 74% (1.939 individuals) examined.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the production of proinflammatory cytokines and expression of cell adhesion molecules in the rheumatoid nodule. METHODS: Cytokine content (tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNFalpha], interleukin-1beta [IL-1beta], and IL-1 receptor antagonist [IL-1Ra]), at the messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein levels, and cell adhesion molecule expression were studied in 16 rheumatoid nodules and 6 synovial membranes. RESULTS: Macrophages in the rheumatoid nodules contained TNFalpha, IL-1beta, and IL-1Ra mRNA and protein, particularly in perivascular cells of the stroma and in the palisading layer. All cell adhesion molecules studied were expressed in both the rheumatoid nodules and synovial membranes, with increased expression of E-selectin in the rheumatoid nodule compared with the synovial membrane, and with the absence of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 expression on cells of the palisading layer in the rheumatoid nodule. CONCLUSION: The presence of similar proinflammatory cytokines and cell adhesion molecules in the rheumatoid nodule and synovial membrane suggests that similar pathogenic processes result in the chronic inflammation and tissue destruction in these lesions.  相似文献
