A simple technique for the long-term non-polarised and polarised culture of human fallopian tube epithelial cells

Fallopian tubes were obtained from 25 women undergoing abdominal hysterectomy. Pieces of fallopian tube mucosa were placed in culture flasks containing minimum essential medium in Earle's salts supplemented with fetal bovine serum. First passage was carried out after 7-10 days and subcultures in 4-5 days. For polarised cell culture, epithelial cells were seeded onto an extracellular matrix system. New epithelial cells were seen on day 2-3 of the primary culture and epithelial patches on day 7-10. Cells reached confluence in 4-5 days in subcultures. The cells could be subcultured for 7-11 passages with a life span of 42-60 days. Epithelial origins of the cells were confirmed by immunofluorescence staining with anti-cytokeratin antibody. Polarised cells showed a columnar pattern, microvilli on their apical surface and basally located nucleus whereas non-polarised cells were flat. It was concluded that the human fallopian tube epithelial cells can be cultured in vitro to create non-polarised and polarised cell layers by using a simple and reproducible technique and this system can be a potential model to study function of the fallopian tube.     

Microwave Rejection Networks

This is an extension of the Bridged-T infinite rejection network idea transformed into microwave concepts. These devices achieve approximately 100db of attenuation with skirt attenuations approximately 5db. The tuning range between 1 KMc and 10 KMc is continuously covered with 4 units at present. Work is continuing to reduce the number of units to 2. Design parameters, performance curves, and application to MILSTD 826 will be discussed.     

Magnet Plunging System for the Bevatron External Proton Beam

As part of a recent 9.6-million-dollar improvement and modernization program, an external proton beam was created for the Bevatron. During the period 1960 to 1963, the equipment necessary to produce this beam was designed, fabricated, and installed. The first external beam emerged from the Bevatron in February 1963.     

Effect of carboxylic acids on permeation of chlorpromazine through dimethyl polysiloxane membrane

The effect of carboxylic acids on the permeation of chlorpromazine was investigated through a dimethyl polysiloxane nonpolar membrane. The permeability of the diffusate, at pH 5.8, increases considerably in the presence of carboxylic acids or phosphate, probably due to an ion-pair formation between the relative anions and chlorpromazine.     

The unified data structure capability in Madcap VI

The data structures which form an integral part of the Madcap VI programming language are described. The initialization (declarationand constructor) expressions and selector expressions of these structures are defined and their implementation using codewords is discussed. Structures, since they can contain references to other structures (including themselves), have the form of directed trees (graphs). Variables of primitive data type (real, complex, etc.) are naturally considered as degenerate graphs, merely single nodes. The possibility for both multiword and fractional-word representation of structures is evident, but the language itself is implementation-independent. Thus a field is simply a substructure. The Madcap VI data structures are compared to data structure concepts in PL/I.This work supported by the United States Atomic Energy Commission.     

Behavior therapy: Observations and reflections.

Presents impressions based on 5 days' observation of the clinical activities of Joseph Wolpe and Arnold Lazarus at the Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute: (1) behavior therapists now treat a wider range of patients and use a greater variety of treatment methods than before; (2) treatment is becoming longer and more complicated, with concomitant lowering of success rates; (3) clinical inference is essential in diagnosis, hierarchy selection, patient management, and ongoing evaluation; and (4) elements of suggestion in the patient-therapist reltionship may play a powerful role in treatment. Temperature dependence of the strength-differential effect in hardened steels

The strength differential (SD) has been measured as a function of temperature in a fully hardened 0.2C, 6 Ni steel, quenched and then tempered at 250°C. It is found appropriate to express the results in terms of the intercept flow stresses as extrapolated back to zero plastic strain. The corresponding SD increases significantly with decreasing temperature below the ambient, and the data are well fitted by separating the SD into an athermal component (~3 pct) and a thermally activated component (up to ~15 pct at the liquid-nitrogen temperature). The latter type of contribution is thought to arise from a dilatation which occurs during the activation process for dislocation motion and which causes an increase in the activation energy under compressive loading and a decrease under tensile loading. The parameters obtained via this treatment are consistent with a double-kink Peierlsbarrier mechanism of plastic flow at low temperatures.
