Effects of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate on chromosomes of human leukocytes and human fetal lung cells

Blood from two male and two female donors was exposed at 37degrees for 4 hr to concentrations of 60.0, 6.0, 0.6, and 0.06 mug of a widely used plasticizer, bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, per milliliter of blood. The bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate was solubilized with polysorbate 80. Appropriate polysorbate and nonpolysorbate controls also were established. Following the 4 hr of incubation, phytohemagglutinin was added and tissue cultures were established. In addition, human fetal lung cells were exposed in tissue culture to a medium containing 6.0 mug/ml of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in polysorbate 80 for 5 days. Similar controls also were established for these experiments. Analysis of chromosome preparations from all cultures obtained failed to show any increased evidence of isochromatid and chromatid breaks or gaps or abnormal forms at any studied concentration when compared to the control cultures. In addition, analysis of fetal lung cell preparations for aneuploidy failed to reveal any differences between cells from study and control cultures. This study involved a short-term exposure to bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in various concentrations which did not cause damage in leukocytes or fetal lung cells.

Ergonovine maleate (EM) is a powerful stimulant of human tubal motility. It has been therefore thought that EM could interfere with normal ovum transport and serve as a contraceptive. The tube activating effects of EM and methyl EM were evaluated in 14 women and results confirmed that both are powerful stimulants of the human Fallopian tube. EM immediately post coitus significantly reduces the conception rate.     

Evaluating outcome in psychotherapy: A hardy perennial.

Discusses issues raised by D. Fiske (see pa, vol. 47:issue 5) and by L. Luborsky (see pa, vol. 47:issue 5) with reference to outcome research in psychotherapy generally, and to a previous paper by the authors (see pa, vol. 47:issue 5 ) in particular. While attention in the past has tended to focus on general criteria of improvement, it is believed that in the future more consideration must be given to the specific changes sought by means of therapy with multiple measures devised for appraising such change. An Economic, Environment-friendly Oxygen-Hydrochloric Acid Regeneration System for Ferric Chloride Etchants used in Photochemical Machining

This paper describes the implementation of a low-cost, environment-friendly, oxygen-based regeneration system into a commercial etching line. The system has been investigated from both technical and economic viewpoints. It has been demonstrated to be cheaper than alternative regeneration techniques but it is only feasible when etchant parameters are monitored and controlled on-line to prevent the precipitation of ferrous salts. From analysis of the system, it was discovered that the most important parameter to control is the etchant pH. This not only influences the ability to regenerate but also dictates the resultant surface finish of the etched product.

In the OHH, during the years 1969 to 1974, 28 patients were operatively treated because of delayed callusformation or pseud-arthrosis, following a fracture of the shaft of the humerus. It was possible to inquire about and to re-examine 20 patients. The operative treatment had, when possible been achieved by osteosynthesis through plates (25 cases). Each of the so treated cases lead to healing of the bone, additional nerve lesion did not in one case occur because of the operation. Objectively seen, there existed in 7 patients a slight, final restriction of movements, for the abduction and outside rotation in the shoulder joint. 6 patients complained of being sensitive to weather changes. The different treatment method of the fracture of the humerus and pseudarthrosis was discussed.     

Does the computer make a difference? Computerized versus face-to-face versus self-report assessment of alcohol, drug, and tobacco use.

Evaluated the hypothesis that individuals may provide more accurate information about sensitive areas to a computer than they would in a face-to-face interview or in a self-report questionnaire. Histories of alcohol, drug, and tobacco use were collected at an addiction treatment center for 150 clients (aged 14–62 yrs) who had been randomly assigned to either computerized-interview, face-to-face interview, or self-report formats (e.g., Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test; Alcohol, Drug, and Tobacco Use History). Multivariate analyses revealed no important differences in reliability, level of problems, or consumption patterns reported across the 3 assessment formats. However, Ss did give differential ratings of the assessment experience. The computerized interview was rated as less friendly, but shorter, more relaxing, lighter, more interesting, and faster than the face-to-face or self-report formats. Detailed analyses of client factors within each assessment format found that the computerized interview was most acceptable to Ss with good visual-motor performance skills and least preferred by better educated and defensive Ss.
