Development of an octocalcium phosphate cement

From previous studies it is known that alpha-tertiary calcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate form a cement upon mixing with water. In this study this cement was optimized in terms of the milling of the constituents, their molar ratio, the amount of hydroxyapatite added and the water/powder ratio. The optimum Ca/P molar ratio of the cement mixture was 1.36±0.03. X-ray diffraction showed the reaction product to be octocalcium phosphate. Addition of precipitated hydroxypatite of over 3% diminished the final strength of the cement significantly. However, admixtures of only 2% of precipitated hydroxyapatite (a) kept the final compressive strength at 30±5 MPa after soaking in Ringers solution at 37°C, (b) diminished the initial setting time from 27.5 to 10 min and the final setting time from 65 to 40 min, (c) diminished the time in which the final strength was reached from 36 to less than 14 h. The tensile strength of this cement is 19±1% of its compressive strength. The optimum water/powder ratio as found in this study was 0.30 g/g.     

Design and development of a multichannel potentiometer for monitoring an electrode array and its application in flow analysis

A versatile potentiometer that works with electrode arrays in flow injection and/or monosegmented flow systems is described. The potentiometer is controlled by a microcomputer that allows individual, sequential multiplexed or random accesses to eight electrodes while employing only one reference electrode. The instrument was demonstrated by monitoring an array of seven flow-through ion-selective electrodes for Ag(+) and for three electrodes for Cl(-), Ca(2+) and K(+). The figures of merit of the individual and multiplexed (summed) readings of the electrode array were compared. The absolute standard deviation of the measurements made by summing the potential of two or more electrodes was maintained constant, thus improving the precision of the measurements. This result shows that an attempt to combine the signals of the electrodes to produce a more intense signal in the Hadamard strategy is feasible and accompanied by a proportional improvement in the precision of individual measurements. The preliminary tests suggest that the system can allow for 270 determinations per hour, with a linear range from 1.0 x 10(-2) to 1.0 x 10(-4) mol l(-1) for the three di inverted exclamation markerent analytes. Detection limits were estimated as 3.1 x 10(-5), 3.0 x 10(-6) and 1.0 x 10(-5) mol l(-1) for Cl(-), Ca(2+) and K(+), respectively.     

Dyadic perfectionism as a predictor of relationship continuity and distress among college students.

This study examined the nature and impact of dyadic perfectionism over a 3-month interval within a sample of 116 college students who were currently involved in an intimate heterosexual relationship. Dyadic perfectionism scores were stable and correlated as expected with scores on concurrent measures of adult attachment orientations and relationship satisfaction. Logistic regression analyses revealed that, controlling for initial commitment status and adult attachment orientations, Time 1 dyadic perfectionism scores significantly and uniquely predicted relationship continuity 3 months later. Lastly, controlling for social desirability, relationship commitment status, and Time 1 adult attachment orientation scores, Time 1 dyadic perfectionism scores also uniquely predicted Time 2 relationship distress. Stress intensity factor for a surface semielliptical crack

A method is proposed for calculating the stress intensity factor K_I of a surface semielliptical crack for almost any monotonie stress function in the crack section. The equations are derived for calculating correction and adjustment coefficients M_i and A_i. Computed values of K_I are compared with the published data. Acute effects of pentobarbital in a monkey operant behavioral test battery

The effects of acute pentobarbital treatment were assessed using a complex operant test battery containing five tasks in which correct performance is thought to depend upon processes associated with short-term memory and attention [delayed-matching-to-sample (DMTS)], color and position discrimination [conditioned position responding (CPR)], motivation [progressive ratio (PR)], time perception [temporal response differentiation (TRD)], and learning [incremental repeated acquisition (IRA)]. Adult, male rhesus monkeys were tested 15 min after IV injection of saline or pentobarbital (1, 3, 5.6, 10, or 15 mg/kg). Behavioral endpoints measured included percent task completed, response rate or latency, and response accuracy. The order of task sensitivity to disruption by PBT was TRD > IRA = DMTS = PR > CPR, in which sensitivity was defined as a significant disruption in any aspect of task performance. PBT slowed response rates at 10.0 and/or 15.0 mg/kg in all tasks. Accuracy was decreased in the TRD task at > or = 5.6 mg/kg but doses of > or = 10.0 mg/kg were required to decrease accuracy in the IRA, DMTS, and CPR tasks. Thus, behavior thought to model time perception (TRD) was more sensitive than behavior modeling learning (IRA), short-term memory and attention (DMTS), and motivation (PR). CPR was the least sensitive behavior. Because pentobarbital exerts its effects at least in part via GABA systems, the effects in the current study were compared with those of a previous study of the acute effects of diazepam. The two compounds exerted fundamentally different effects on operant test battery performance.     

Use of postconsumer polyethylene in blends with polyamide 6: Effects of the extrusion method and the compatibilizer

Blends of polyamide and high‐density polyethylene show adequate properties for a large range of applications: they are used for the production of filaments, containers, and molding resins. The effect of the addition of 2 wt % of a compatibilizer, maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene, to the blend was studied and compared to the use of postconsumer polyethylene. The samples were extruded with single‐ and twin‐screw extruders with 25, 50, or 75 wt % f polyethylene, and the test specimens, molded by injection, were characterized by stress–strain tests, thermal properties, and morphologies. Processing the blends with postconsumer polyethylene in both extruders improved the mechanical properties in comparison to the blends processed with high‐density polyethylene and the compatibilizer. The morphologies of these blends showed that there was a decrease in the domain size of the disperse phase with the use of the compatibilizer or postconsumer polyethylene. The results indicate that for this blend, postconsumer polyethylene substituted, with advantages, for the necessity of a compatibilizer and the use of the high‐density polyethylene. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
