Water‐soluble biopolymers (SBO) were isolated from the alkaline hydrolysate of two materials sampled from an urban waste treatment plant; that is, an anaerobic fermentation digestate and a compost. The digestate biopolymers contained more lipophilic and aliphatic C, and less acidic functional groups than the compost biopolymers. The SBO were blended with poly (vinyl alcohol‐co‐ethylene), hereinafter EVOH. The blends were extruded and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography (SEC)– multi angle static light scattering (MALS) analysis, and for their thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties. The blends behavior depended on the type of SBO and its relative content. Evidence was obtained for a condensation reaction occurring between the EVOH and SBO. The best results were obtained with the blends containing up to 10% SBO isolated from the biowaste anaerobic digestate. Compared with the neat EVOH, these blends exhibited lower melt viscosity and no significant or great difference in mechanical properties. The results on the extrudates, compared with those previously obtained on the same blends obtained by solvent casting, indicate that the blends properties depend strongly also on the processing technology. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Measurements of DNA and study of chromatin status in blood cell nuclei help solve numerous basic problems of biology and medicine. Acid lability of DNA was assessed in 5 patients with grave icterohemorrhagic leptospirosis. The distribution of fluorescence peaks on the curve of neutrophil DNA hydrolysis in patients with grave leptospirosis indicates that functionally low-active acid-resistant DNA fraction predominates in their chromatin. Assessment of acid lability of DNA is proposed to be used for assessing the severity of the pathological process.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To test whether dioxins affect liver and thyroid function, lipid metabolism and glucose or immunological variables, in workers exposed to brominated dioxins and furans. METHODS: 34 male production employees (29 were extruder operators) and eight technical support personnel were studied, all of whom were potentially exposed to polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) and furans (PBDFs) during production of resins containing polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Controls were from a similar resin producing plant that did not use PBDEs. Blood samples were analysed for tetra, penta, and hexabrominated congeners, but 2,3,7,8-TBDD was the only exposure measure used in the regression analyses. Seven liver function indicators, five measures of blood lipids and glucose, four haematology and blood coagulation measures, and three measures of thyroid function were examined. RESULTS: None of the variables was statistically related to concentration of 2,3,7,8-TBDD in the regression analyses. Cigarette smoking was related to several outcomes at the 0.05 level: aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH), erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and white blood cell count. Body mass index was also related to alanine aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase, cholinesterase, GLDH, cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, and glucose concentrations. No definitive associations between liver, blood lipid, thyroid, or immunological variables and exposure to brominated dioxins or blood lipid concentration of 2,3,7,8-TBDD were found. CONCLUSIONS: The study population was small and hence the findings must be interpreted with caution. Nevertheless, these results provide a base for interpreting the results of clinical studies in similarly exposed populations.  相似文献

While being shipped to a laboratory, impressions can be exposed to excessive temperatures. This study compared the effects of different time and temperature storage conditions, including temperature extremes of 66 C and -10 C, on the accuracy of addition silicone and polyether impressions. The greatest distortion generally occurred as a result of the 66 C temperature extreme. The authors recommend that impressions be poured in stone according to manufacturers' specifications before being shipped to a dental laboratory.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine effectiveness of large-scale distribution of an oral rabies vaccine contained in a palatable bait for halting expansion of a canine rabies epizootic in coyotes (Canis latrans). DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 98 coyotes during prevaccination surveillance and 449 coyotes and 60 other wild animals during postvaccination surveillance. PROCEDURE: A vaccinia recombinant oral rabies vaccine was inserted into an edible bait for coyotes that also contained tetracycline as a biomarker. Vaccine units were then distributed via aircraft, using automated distribution equipment and flight plans developed by incorporating global positioning system equipment. The target area was along the northern edge of an area that had an epizootic of canine rabies. This area was identified through previously conducted epidemiologic surveillance of rabies cases. During postvaccination surveillance, dental specimens were examined for biomarker evidence of bait acceptance, and serum samples were analyzed for rabies neutralizing antibodies. RESULTS: Samples from 449 coyotes were obtained during postvaccination surveillance. Seroconversion was detected in 39 of 96 (40.6%) coyotes that had evidence of tetracycline biomarker. Additionally, the number of rabies cases in the target area decreased, and expansion of the epizootic area ceased. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Mass distribution of an oral rabies vaccine in a palatable bait is an effective means to halt expansion of a rabies epizootic involving coyotes.  相似文献
