Certain characteristics of fracture of polypropylene under the influence of aggressive media,temperature, and mechanical loads

This article describes a method of determining the long-term strength of plastics under a combined influence of mechanical loads (uniaxial tension), temperature, and aggressive media. Data are reported on the time-to-rupture of polypropylene in air, water, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, and a 10% NaOH solution at 20–140° C at stresses of up to 0.6 UTS.     

Ultrastructural studies of influenza C. II. von Magnus phenomenon

Influenza C was propagated by serial undiluted passage; conditions known to produce non-infectious (von Magnus) particles with influenza A and B. Following each passage infectious material was assayed for infectivity and haemagglutinating activity and the values related by calculating the log difference between infectivity and haemagglutinating titre (I:A ratio). Infectious material from each pass was examined for ultrastruct aberrations by negative strain electron microscopy. Influenza C exhibited a significantly smaller decrease in I:A ratio than exhibiyed by similarly propagated influenza A and B. Ultrastructural examination of the serially passed influenza C revealed no production of morphologically aberrant forms, whereas serially passed influenza B produced a strikingly altered morphology.     

Vibratory compaction of tarred dolomite bodies

Conclusions The vibratory compaction method using heated tarred dolomite bodies yields unfired articles with a high hydration resistance.The high density structure of vibrated products was obtained with a frequency vibration of 6900 osc/min.It is desirable to use bodies with a continuous grain-size composition to get better vibrocompaction of the articles.Translated from Ogneupory, No. 6, pp. 10–14, June, 1967.     

Imitation of facial and manual gestures by human neonates

Infants between 12 and 21 days of age can imitate both facial and manual gestures; this behavior cannot be explained in terms of either conditioning or innate releasing mechanisms. Such imitation implies that human neonates can equate their own unseen behaviors with gestures they see others perform.     

Anorthite insulating refractory

Conclusions A technology was developed for manufacturing heat-insulating refractories with an anorthite composition and an apparent density of 0.3–0.4 g/cm³ or more using kaolin, semihydrated gypsum and stabilized foam. The proposed method guarantees a reduction in the production cycle, yielding cheap insulating brick, and the possibility of mechanizing the production processes.Anorthite ultralightweight refractories in terms of their basic factors correspond to insulating products made by foreign concerns for service at 1100–1260°C.Translated from Ogneupory, No.5, pp. 36–40, May, 1970.
