This investigation sought to expand existing knowledge of anxiety sensitivity in a sample of high school students (N = 2,365) assessed over 4 years. The stability of anxiety sensitivity levels across assessment periods was examined, and cluster analyses were used to identify different developmental pathways in levels of anxiety sensitivity. Groups of adolescents with stable low, stable high, and escalating anxiety sensitivity levels were identified. Adolescents with stable high or escalating anxiety sensitivity were significantly more likely to report experiencing a panic attack than individuals with stable low anxiety sensitivity. Results also indicated that Asian and Hispanic adolescents tended to report higher anxiety sensitivity but that their anxiety sensitivity was less strongly associated with panic than that of Caucasian adolescents. Initial experiments using whole cells have shown that there were specific and saturable interactions between kunjin (KUN) virus and receptor molecules on the Vero cell surfaces. Solubilisation of Vero cell plasma membranes with octyl-D-glucoside (OG) yielded an extract which also interacted specifically with KUN virus. This was proven using electron microscopy. When the virus-OG-extract complex was exposed onto Vero cell monolayers, no KUN virus was observed to enter into the whole cells. This would imply that there was virus-receptor interaction with the OG-extract leaving no free virus to attach to the whole cells. The attachment kinetics of KUN virus was studied further using the Scatchard analysis which indicated the involvement of more than one interactive macromolecule in the attachment event. 相似文献

PURPOSE: We developed two models that are modifications of our original poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) core-and-skirt keratoprosthesis. In these keratoprostheses, the mechanical strength of the skirt has been considerably increased with divinyl glycol (DVG) as a cross-linking agent during polymerization. In one (KPro I), methyl methacrylate (MMA) was added as comonomer to increase cell adhesion, and in the other (KPro II), HEMA was polymerized with DVG without comonomer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the process of healing and biocolonization and to ascertain whether KPro I demonstrates better ingrowth than the mechanically stronger KPro II, after implantation in rabbit eyes. METHODS: Ten rabbits were used for each model and studied at five predetermined end points up to 26 weeks. The device was implanted as a full-thickness keratoprosthesis covered with a conjunctival flap. RESULTS: Neither prosthesis demonstrated extrusion or retroprosthetic membrane formation. There was no significant difference between the two types of prosthesis with respect to tissue ingrowth and surrounding tissue melting. Histologically, inflammation was not severe, but calcification was seen in most specimens. Evidence of biodegradation of the prosthesis also was seen. CONCLUSION: In our original keratoprosthesis, fibrovascular invasion had occurred into the prosthetic skirt, but wound dehiscence and low mechanical strength resulted in an unfavorable outcome. In this series, the mechanical properties were improved, and KPro II was stronger than KPro I. Therefore KPro II would be the preferred polymer combination for surgical manipulation. Identifying subgroups of high-risk individuals can lead to the development of tailored interventions for those subgroups. This study compared two multivariate statistical methods (logistic regression and signal detection) and evaluated their ability to identify subgroups at risk. The methods identified similar risk predictors and had similar predictive accuracy in exploratory and validation samples. However, the 2 methods did not classify individuals into the same subgroups. Within subgroups, logistic regression identified individuals that were homogeneous in outcome but heterogeneous in risk predictors. In contrast, signal detection identified individuals that were homogeneous in both outcome and risk predictors. Because of the ability to identify homogeneous subgroups, signal detection may be more useful than logistic regression for designing distinct tailored interventions for subgroups of high-risk individuals. The use of fluorescence as an analytical technique has been growing over the last 20 years. A major factor in inhibiting more rapid growth has been the inability to make comparable fluorescence intensity measurements across laboratories. NIST recognizes the need to develop and provide primary fluorescence intensity standard (FIS) reference materials to the scientific and technical communities involved in these assays. The critical component of the effort will be the cooperation between the Federal laboratories, the manufacturers, and the technical personnel who will use the fluorescence intensity standards. We realize that the development and use of FIS will have to overcome many difficulties. However, as we outline in this article, the development of FIS is feasible. 相似文献

Young (n?=?30), middle-aged (n?=?32), and old (n?=?28) adults repeated (shadowed) words presented to the left ear at 60 words per minute with and without distracter words presented to the other ear. Dichotic shadowing error rate increased with age. An attempt to eliminate the age effect by adjusting for age differences in monaural shadowing errors, fluid intelligence, and pure-tone hearing loss did not succeed. When the analyses were confined to Ss who made no monaural shadowing errors, dichotic shadowing errors still increased linearly with age. These results showed that there are selective-attention deficits in older adults that cannot be accounted for by the uncertainty of the target location.
