OBJECTIVES: This ecologic study assessed whether there was a change in health status in Alaska in the winter of 1992-93 after the introduction of MTBE in gasoline. Methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE) is used as a fuel oxygenate in the United States and in Europe. In the winter of 1992-93 MTBE was added to gasoline in the cities of Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska. The program was discontinued in Fairbanks in December, 1992, but continued in Anchorage until February 28, 1993. METHODS: Outpatient visits for state employees and dependents (n = approximately 28,000) living in Alaska were compared over three winters by analyzing health insurance claims. RESULTS: Odds ratios were calculated. The odds ratios indicated that the winter of 92-93 was not statistically different from previous winters in numbers of claims for upper respiratory illness, bronchitis, headache, or asthma in either Anchorage or Fairbanks. CONCLUSION: There was no increase in claims for respiratory illness in either city after introduction of MTBE. 相似文献

Hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry was used to determine the selenium concentrations in 130 samples of human serum from a control group of inhabitants in the southern part of the province of Granada (Spain). The mean selenium concentration in serum was 74.9 micrograms/l. This concentration did not vary significantly (P > 0.05) in relation to the sex of the subject, with concentrations of 80.6 micrograms/l in men and 70.7 micrograms/l in women. These mean values correspond to a mean daily dietary selenium intake of 50.4 micrograms per day in men and 44.6 micrograms per day in women. A considerable number of the individuals in the study area therefore have a daily selenium intake lower than the recommended dietary allowance of 70 micrograms per day for men and 55 micrograms per day for women. Likewise, the measured selenium concentrations in the basic health zones of the area were not statistically different (P > 0.05). The differences in selenium concentration between subjects in coastal zones and mountainous zones are therefore not significant. 相似文献

The remarkable ability of the body to maintain balance is the result of central nervous system integration of sophisticated inputs from the vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems. Strategies by patients with balance dysfunction are aphysiologic when their performance is relatively better on more difficult conditions of sensory conflict than on easier ones. Twenty-two aphysiologic patterns on computerized dynamic posturography were compared with age-matched normal and vestibular patterns. The aphysiologic group performed significantly better than the patients in the vestibular dysfunction group on the most difficult subtests of computerized dynamic posturography, conditions 5 and 6, yet significantly poorer on the easier subtests, conditions 1 through 4. In addition, patients in the aphysiologic group tended to show greater intertrial variability compared with patients in both normal and vestibular system dysfunction groups. A stepwise linear discriminant analysis was used to determine a set of conditions that had significant value in discriminating between the three patient groups. Case studies are presented to further illustrate the clinical usefulness of computerized dynamic posturography testing in the evaluation of patients suspected of having a functional component to their on-feet balance problems. 相似文献

The enzymatic oxygenation of linoleic acid leads to the production of 13-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (13-HODE). Subsequent dehydrogenation of 13-HODE by the NAD(+)-dependent 13-HODE dehydrogenase results in the formation of the 2,4-dienone 13-oxooctadecadienoic acid (13-OXO). These oxidized derivatives of linoleic acid have been shown to be involved in several cellular regulatory processes. In the present study, we have examined the enzymatic and nonenzymatic reaction of 13-OXO with glutathione (GSH) and N-acetylcysteine (N-AcCySH). Nonenzymatic reaction rates were determined spectrophotometrically and exhibited a pH optimum of 9.0 which is consistent with attack of a thiolate anion. Product formation was evaluated by reverse-phase HPLC which showed formation of one major product upon reaction with either GSH or N-AcCySH. The HPLC-purified products were examined by FAB MS as well as one- and two-dimensional NMR. The products, with either GSH or N-AcCySH, were found to consist of an equal mixture of two diastereomers arising from addition of a thiolate to the 9 position of 13-OXO. Using GSH as the thiol, the reaction was also shown to be catalyzed by rat glutathione transferase 8-8. In the case of the enzymatic reaction there is stereoselective product formation. Furthermore, submicromolar concentrations of the 13-OXO-GSH conjugate were shown to significantly inhibit glutathione transferase activity in HT-29 homogenates. Viral, bacterial, protozoal, and cancer-associated Ags elicit strong responses in human gammadelta T lymphocytes. The majority of these cells in the peripheral blood express the Vgamma9Vdelta2-encoded TCR and recognize nonpeptidic phosphoantigens without an apparent MHC restriction. We have shown that Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cells express the inhibitory CD94/NKG2 receptor for HLA class I molecules. The anti-CD94 mAb inhibits 1) the Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cell proliferation in response mycobacterial phosphoantigens and 2) the HIV-induced Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cell expansion. Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cells stimulated with nonpeptidic mycobacterial antigens produce IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha. Signaling through the CD94/NKG2 receptor interferes with the synthesis of these cytokines. The CD94/HLA class I interaction is also involved in the cytotoxic activity of Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cells. The Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cell regulation through the CD94 receptor may be important for the potentially dual function in innate immunity, i.e., 1) NK-like and 2) TCR ligand-induced cytolytic activities. 相似文献
