The properties of peripheral cutaneous units in the hairy skin of cat's forelimb were studied by single-fiber recordings with tungsten microelectrodes. The response properties and receptive field (RFs) of total 193 units in superficial branch of radial nerve (SRN) were studied. The SRN sample included the following five major types of mechanoreceptive units; two types of low-threshold units (type I and II, slowly adapting), two types of hair units (G and D, rapidly adapting) and field units (F, responding principally to slow skin movement). Afferent conduction velocities of these units ranged from 9.0 to 56.0 m/sec. D hair fibers conducted much slower than other types of afferents and their conduction velocities were between 9.0 and 23.3 m/sec. Most of the smaller RFs of G, D and F units were found in the paw and digits. The disto-proximal increase of the mean size of RFs was marked in D hair units. The distributions of the RFs of simultaneously recorded paired units, which were supposed to be adjacent fibers, were examined. Among 23 paired units, more than half of them were homonymous combinations of unit types and there were no marked prevalence of particular types in heteronymous combinations. The RFs of paired units were close to each other, but showed little overlaps and some were separated by up to several cm over the skin surface. Some functional properties of cutaneous afferents from the forelimb were discussed.  相似文献

The convective heat transfer for turbulent flow through rod bundles representative of nuclear fuel rods used in pressurized water reactors is examined. The rod bundles consist of a square array of parallel rods that are held on a constant pitch by support grids spaced axially along the rod bundle. Split-vane pair support grids, which create swirling flow in the rod bundle, as well as disc and standard support grids are investigated. Single-phase convective heat transfer coefficients are measured for flow downstream of support grids in a rod bundle. The rods are heated using direct resistance heating, and a bulk axial flow of air is used to cool the rods in the rod bundle. Air is used as the working fluid instead of water to reduce the power required to heat the rod bundle. Results indicate heat transfer enhancement for up to 10 hydraulic diameters downstream of the support grids. A general correlation is developed to predict the heat transfer development downstream of support grids. In addition, circumferential variations in heat transfer coefficients result in hot streaks that develop on the rods downstream of split-vane pair support grids.  相似文献

Understanding the relative motion of objects in contact is essential for controlling macroscopic lubrication and adhesion, for comprehending biological macromolecular interfaces, and for developing submicrometre-scale electromechanical devices. An object undergoing lateral motion while in contact with a second object can either roll or slide. The resulting energy loss and mechanical wear depend largely on which mode of motion occurs. At the macroscopic scale, rolling is preferred over sliding, and it is expected to have an equally important role in the microscopic domain. Although progress has been made in our understanding of the dynamics of sliding at the atomic level, we have no comparable insight into rolling owing to a lack of experimental data on microscopic length scales. Here we produce controlled rolling of carbon nanotubes on graphite surfaces using an atomic force microscope. We measure the accompanying energy loss and compare this with sliding. Moreover, by reproducibly rolling a nanotube to expose different faces to the substrate and to an external probe, we are able to study the object over its complete surface.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the clinical effects and hemostatic efficiency of transfusions of platelets preserved in the frozen state for as long as 2 years with transfusions of platelets preserved in the conventional manner for as long as 5 days in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS: Seventy-three patients were prospectively randomly assigned to receive transfusions of cryopreserved or liquid-preserved platelets. Nonsurgical blood loss was measured during and after the operation. Bleeding time, hematologic variables, and the bleeding time site shed blood were assayed before cardiopulmonary bypass and at 30 minutes and 2, 4, and 24 hours after transfusion. In vitro platelet function tests were conducted on platelets obtained from healthy volunteers. RESULTS: No adverse sequelae of the transfusions were observed. Blood loss and the need for postoperative blood product transfusions were lower in the group receiving cryopreserved platelets. Lower posttransfusion platelet increments and a tendency toward decreased platelet survival were observed in patients receiving cryopreserved platelets. Hematocrit and plasma fibrinogen were significantly higher in this group, and the duration of intubation was shorter. In vitro, cryopreserved platelets demonstrated less aggregation, lower pH, and decreased response to hypotonic stress but generated more procoagulant activity and thromboxane. CONCLUSIONS: (1) Cryopreserved platelet transfusions are superior to liquid-preserved platelets in reducing blood loss and the need for blood product transfusions after cardiopulmonary bypass. (2) The reduction in blood loss in the patients receiving cryopreserved platelet transfusions after cardiopulmonary bypass probably reflects improved in vivo hemostatic function of cryopreserved platelets. (3) Some in vitro measures of platelet quality (aggregation, pH, hypotonic stress) may not reflect in vivo quality of platelet transfusions after cardiopulmonary bypass, whereas other in vitro measures (platelet procoagulant activity and thromboxane) do.  相似文献

Evidence is reviewed concerning the brain areas and neurotransmitters involved in aggressive behavior in the cat and rodent. In the cat, two distinct neural circuits involving the hypothalamus and PAG subserve two different kinds of aggression: defensive rage and predatory (quiet-biting) attack. The roles played by the neurotransmitters serotonin, GABA, glutamate, opioids, cholecystokinin, substance P, norepinephrine, dopamine, and acetylcholine in the modulation and expression of aggression are discussed. For the rat, a single area, largely coincident with the intermediate hypothalamic area, is crucial for the expression of attack; variations in the rat attack response in natural settings are due largely to environmental variables. Experimental evidence emphasizing the roles of serotonin and GABA in modulating hypothalamically evoked attack in the rat is discussed. It is concluded that significant progress has been made concerning our knowledge of the circuitry underlying the neural basis of aggression. Although new and important insights have been made concerning neurotransmitter regulation of aggressive behavior, wide gaps in our knowledge remain.  相似文献

Methods are described for isolating smooth muscle cells from the tracheae of adult and neonatal sheep and measuring the single-cell shortening velocity. Isolated cells were elongated, Ca2+ tolerant, and contracted rapidly and substantially when exposed to cholinergic agonists, KCl, serotonin, or caffeine. Adult cells were longer and wider than preterm cells. Mean cell length in 1.6 mM CaCl2 was 194 +/- 57 (SD) microm (n = 66) for adult cells and 93 +/- 32 microm (n = 20) for preterm cells (P < 0.05). Mean cell width at the widest point of the adult cells was 8.2 +/- 1.8 microm (n = 66) and 5.2 +/- 1.5 microm (n = 20) for preterm cells (P < 0.05). Cells were loaded into a perfusion dish maintained at 35 degreesC and exposed to agonists, and contractions were videotaped. Cell lengths were measured from 30 video frames and plotted as a function of time. Nonlinear fitting of cell length to an exponential model gave shortening velocities faster than most of those reported for airway smooth muscle tissues. For a sample of 10 adult and 10 preterm cells stimulated with 100 microM carbachol, mean (+/- SD) shortening velocity of the preterm cells was not different from that of the adult cells (0.64 +/- 0.30 vs. 0.54 +/- 0.27 s-1, respectively), but preterm cells shortened more than adult cells (68 +/- 12 vs. 55 +/- 11% of starting length, respectively; P < 0.05). The preparative and analytic methods described here are widely applicable to other smooth muscles and will allow contraction to be studied quantitatively at the single-cell level.  相似文献
