Experimental wind tunnel and smoke visualization testing as well as CFD and analytical modeling were conducted to investigate the performance of a two-sided wind catcher. This type of wind catcher is divided internally into two halves for the purposes of air supply and extract. In this study, the two-sided wind catcher model was constructed of two similar one-sided wind catcher models, which were attached together back to back. These one-sided models are 1:40 scale models of Kharmani's School wind catcher in the city of Yazd. Experimental investigations were carried out using an open-circuit wind tunnel and both the induced volumetric airflow into the building and the pressure coefficients around all surfaces of the wind catcher model were measured at various wind angles. Furthermore, the CFD simulation was also used to evaluate the pressure coefficient distribution and airflow pattern around and through the wind catcher. Additional experimental tests and computational fluid dynamics simulation of the wind catcher in the wind tunnel were also conducted in order to assess the accuracy of measurement procedures and the uncertainty of experimental results. This article also represents a semi-empirical approach in which experimental data were used for a detailed analytic model, in order to provide an accurate estimate of the performance of wind catchers. It was found that for an isolated two-sided wind catcher model, the maximum efficiency is achieved at the angle of 90°. At this air incident angle the wind catcher efficiency increases approximately 20% more than the one at zero angle. The experimental investigations demonstrated the potential of two-sided wind catcher for enhancing the natural ventilation inside buildings. It can be seen that CFD simulation and analytical modeling results have a good agreement with the experimental results. Theoretical modeling can also help to assess the accuracy of measurement procedures and the uncertainty of experimental results.  相似文献

The Galbeta1-3GalNAcalpha (TF antigen)-binding lectin (ABL) from the common edible mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) has a potent anti-proliferative effect without any apparent cytotoxicity. This unusual combination of properties prompted investigation of its mechanism of action. In contrast to soluble lectin, agarose-immobilized, and hence noninternalizable ABL had no effect on proliferation of HT29 colon cancer cells. Electron microscopy of HT29 cells incubated with fluorescein- and gold-conjugated ABL showed internalization of the lectin into endocytotic vesicles and multivesicular bodies. Confocal microscopy showed perinuclear accumulation of fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated lectin, which also inhibits HT29 cell proliferation, raising the possibility that the lectin might interfere with nuclear pore function. Transport of heat shock protein 70 into the nucleus in response to heat shock was blocked by preincubation of HT29 cells for 6 h with 40 micrograms/ml ABL. In digitonin-permeabilized cells, nuclear uptake of bovine albumin conjugated to a nuclear localization sequence (NLS)-containing peptide was also inhibited by a 15-min preincubation with 40-100 micrograms/ml ABL. In contrast, serum-stimulated nuclear translocation of mitogen-activated protein kinase, which is NLS-independent, was not affected by pretreatment of cells with the lectin. These results suggest that the anti-proliferative effect of ABL is likely to be a consequence of the lectin trafficking to the nuclear periphery, where it blocks NLS-dependent protein uptake into the nucleus.  相似文献

Cochlear implants have been very successful in restoring partial hearing to profoundly deaf people. Many individuals with implants are now able to communicate and understand speech without lip-reading, and some are able to talk over the phone. Children with implants can develop spoken-language skills and attend normal schools (i.e., schools with normal-hearing children). The greatest benefits with cochlear implantation have occurred in patients who (1) acquired speech and language before their hearing loss, and (2) have shorter duration of deafness. Gradual, but steady, improvements in speech production and speech perception have also occurred in prelingually deafened adults or children.  相似文献

We report the cases of three patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) who each recovered rapidly after experiencing a life-threatening episode with severe thrombocytopenia. All three cases were the typical restricting-type of AN, occurring in adolescence. They refused to be admitted to a hospital until their general condition had been severely deteriorated. Their lowest platelet counts were 2.9, 4.6, and 2.3 x 10(4)/mm3, respectively. Apparent hemorrhagic tendencies, such as purpura, gingival and nasal bleeding, and gastrointestinal bleeding were observed. The bone marrow examination showed apparent hypoplasia in two patients. No evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation or autoantibody to platelets was detected. The platelet counts recovered rapidly by water and nutritional supplementation. The recovery from the AN itself was excellent in all three patients without specific psychotherapy.  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) acts as a neurotransmitter. However, excess NO produced from neuronal NO synthase (nNOS) or inducible NOS (iNOS) during inflammation of the central nervous system can be neurotoxic, disrupting neurotransmitter and hormone production and killing neurons. A screen of a hippocampal cDNA library showed that a unique region of the iNOS protein interacts with Kalirin, previously identified as an interactor with a secretory granule peptide biosynthetic enzyme. Kalirin associates with iNOS in vitro and in vivo and inhibits iNOS activity by preventing the formation of iNOS homodimers. Expression of exogenous Kalirin in pituitary cells dramatically reduces iNOS inhibition of ACTH secretion. Thus Kalirin may play a neuroprotective role during inflammation of the central nervous system by inhibiting iNOS activity.  相似文献

Automatic triggering of magnetic resonance (MR) angiography with detection of a contrast material bolus was evaluated. Signal intensity changes with time were tracked in a prescribed tracking or monitoring volume by a parallel signal processing unit that automatically started data acquisition once user-defined thresholds were exceeded.
