Caroli's disease with intrahepatic gall-stones and salmonella infection

At operation for small bowel intussusception, a 26-year-old man was found to have an enlarged liver and spleen. Subsequent investigations suggested bile passage infection associated with numerous intrahepatic gall-stones but symptomatic cholangitis did not present until 5 months later. Retrograde cholangiography showed cavernous ectasia of the bile ducts which contained gall-stones.     

Preintervention effects of mediation versus arbitration.

Examined the effects of the anticipation of various forms of 3rd-party intervention in a collective bargaining simulation. 50 male graduate students served as ss. Results indicate negotiators faced with a binding decision from a 3rd party behaved in a more conciliatory fashion and were more likely to reach agreement than those faced with a nonbinding decision. Chemical structure of coal macerals in Balmer 10 coal and fusinite from Illinois coal as indicated by reductive alkylation

A Canadian Cretaceous coking coal from the Balmer 10 seam, Fernie, British Columbia, was separated by sink-and-float methods into vitrinite and a semifusinite-rich fraction. A portion of the vitrinite fraction was oxidized in air at 100 °C for 72 h to destroy the coking properties. The fresh vitrinite, oxidized vitrinite, and semifusinite of the Balmer coal, and the fusinite from Illinois coal, were each subjected to the reductive alkylation procedure of Sternberg, to cleave the ether linkages and octylate the products. The oxygen functional groups before and after ether cleavage were determined, as were the extractabilities by benzene of the octylated products. Thus the molecular weights of the benzenesoluble fractions of the octylated cleavage products were: fresh vitrinite 1930, oxidized vitrinite 1830, and fusinite 1490. The molecular-weight distribution of the octylated cleavage products was estimated by volatility analysis, which demonstrated the presence of much lower-molecular-weight material. Dilatation analysis of fresh and oxidized vitrinite showed that after cleavage of the ether linkages with potassium in tetrahydrofuran, the two could be brought to the same state. The dilatation behaviour of semifusinite after cleavage of the ether links and octylation showed only contraction, whereas the oxidized vitrinite treated in a similar manner exhibited a large dilatation.     

Fire performance of exterior wall insulation and finish systems

It is quite possible that variations of the systems currently available on the market may require additional or different fire testing. Successfully tested and approved systems do not present a fire hazard and should be permitted on all types of construction. Research with the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Adults.

The past 5 years of research with the adult Wechsler scales is critically reviewed. Most investigators used the most recently developed scale, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. Topical coverage includes: comparative validity; short forms; special populations and applications; refinements and critiques; personality correlates; investigations of diagnostic value; special diagnostic groups; and scatter, patterns, and diagnosis. The 197 articles reviewed show that there is no diminution in the number of researches in the area. While the quality of the research has improved, too many investigators repeat the errors contained in earlier studies, despite the periodic publication of these critical reviews. Conformity under varying conditions of personal commitment.

This study tested a central proposition, stemming from Rotter's Social Learning Theory, that conformity is related to low expectations of success in socially evaluative situations and is consequently accompanied by defensive processes. 2 variants of an Asch situation representing increasing degrees of personal commitment were compared to a control condition. Situational measures of confidence included betting and statements of expectancy. Additional personality indices included level of aspiration, need for approval, and internal vs. external control of reinforcement. The Ss were 110 introductory psychology students. Results depict the conformer as one who has a low expectation of success in evaluative situations. His lesser confidence leads to avoidant behavior to resolve the ensuing conflict. Developmental changes in concept utilization among normal and retarded children.

Examined the concepts employed by 100 normal children in kindergarten-Grade 4 (Study 1), and by 48 retarded vs 48 normal children matched for mental ages ranging from 5 to 11 yrs (Study 2). Ss were required to select pairs of pictures from a large array of pictures depicting common objects and to explain the basis for their pairing responses. Factor analysis of the conceptual responses of normal Ss revealed factors for abstraction (nominal and functional concepts as opposed to perceptible concepts) and complimentarity ("go together" responses as opposed to similarity responses). Retarded Ss differed from normals primarily in their use of more complimentary and fewer similarity concepts. The developmental course of concept utilization for normals was characterized as a change from perceptible to nominal and functional concepts, while that for retarded Ss was characterized as a change from complimentary to similarity concepts. Adenocarcinoma of the colon presenting as anaemia

All patients with adenocarcinoma of the colon treated surgically at the Austin Hospital over a five-year period were reviewed to determine the relevance of anaemia in diagnosis. It was found that one-fifth of the patients presented with symptoms of anaemia to the doctor of first contact, and of these, one-third had an unwarranted delay in diagnosis (mean delay 13 months).
