Normal women produce small amounts of active androgens. When androgen levels are elevated, such as for example in the polycystic ovary syndrome, this is followed by the development of male physical characteristics and muscle mass, structure and function as well as android adipose tissue distribution and function. Psychological features and stress reactions also seem similar to those of men. Such women have an increased risk of developing hypertension, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Recent data have shown that these physical, and psychological characteristics, as well as risk of ill health, are also found in the population of women selected at random. Women in the lowest quintiles of levels of sex-hormone-binding globulin--an indicator inversely related to active androgens--are at risk of developing hypertension, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular mortality. The mechanism probably includes muscular insulin resistance, following a relative androgen excess. It is thus apparent that androgens, even within the highest levels of the nonselected population of women, are powerful predictors of serious disease development. The population at risk might be as large as about 20% of middle-aged women. This is an area of female disease risk which requires more attention in screening and intervention procedures.  相似文献

Ge films deposited by vacuum deposition at 425?C are generally p-type. This paper discusses the use of pulsed-electron beam annealing and ion implantation to modify the carrier concentration of such films. Electron beam annealing has been used to reduce the carrier concentration by more than a factor of 30 and n-type films have been obtained by phosphorus implantation and subsequent thermal annealing. TEM, RBS and Hall measurements have been used to characterize the films. The electrical properties of the as-grown films are believed to be defect dominated.  相似文献

Nine volunteer subjects were tested with intravenously administered cocaine hydrochloride in doses ranging from 4 to 32 mg, as well as 10 mg of dextroamphetamine sulfate. Measures of cardiovascular and subjective effects were made. Generally parallel dose-effect functions were obtained for heart rate, blood pressure, Addiction Research Center Inventory scores, Profile of Mood Scales, and subject ratings. A substantial effect on each of these variables was recorded after 8 mg of cocaine. The increase continued and peaked at approximately 16 mg after which it usually leveled off. Ten milligrams of dextroamphetamine generally had an effect comparable to 8 to 16 mg of cocaine.  相似文献

A study of bubble nucleation in liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen has been made in a 120 mm bubble chamber using a high speed cine camera.The initiation and growth of bubbles from artificially prepared cavities was studied. These cavities, produced in both copper and brass surfaces, had mouth radii ranging from 50 μm to 190 μm with depths varying from 110 μm to 500 μm. The liquids were superheated by either heating the surface containing the cavities or by reducing the pressure of the liquid, or by combining both of these methods.The heat fluxes required for initiation of boiling were greater than those required to sustain nucleation from a given site. The growth rate of the bubbles at constant liquid pressure was dependent on a number of factors. It changes as a bubble grew out of the thermal or superheated layer above the metal surface. After an initial period of more rapid growth the vapour volume increased linearly with time. The growth rate was dependent on the liquid used; being slower in liquid hydrogen than in liquid nitrogen. Formulae were obtained which predicted the observed variations in growth rate and departure volume.No nucleation was observed from the test surfaces for a pressure drop alone; the surfaces had to be heated before nucleation would occur. It is thought that this was due to the existence of a zero contact angle for cryogenic liquids on solid surfaces.  相似文献

New-born pig proximal colon, incubated in vitro, transports methionine with a Km of 0-33 mM and a Vmax of 0-62 mumole cm-2h-1. There is still a net transport of methionine on day 4, but the Km now increases to 10 mM and the Vmax falls to 0-15 mumole cm-2h-1. There is no net transport of methionine across proximal colons taken from 10-day-old pigs. 2. The mean intramucosal concentration of methionine, following incubation in medium containing 1 mM methionine, is 7-18+/-0-8 mM for the new-born, 0-55+/-0-05 mM for the 4-day-old and 0-31+/-0-06 mM for the 10-day-old pig. 3. Both methionine and glucose cause an immediate increase in the short-circuit current of new-born and 1-day-old pig colons. The kinetics for this interaction with methionine gives a Km for methionine of 0-24 mM and a maximum effect of 27 muA cm-2. This effect is not seen in 4- or 10-day-old pigs. 4. Net Na+ transport across the new-born pig proximal colon, measured in the absence of methionine, is about three times that calculated from the measured short-circuit current. Methionine increases the mucosal to serosal flux of Na+ by an amount roughly equal to that predicted from the increase in short-circuit current. The ability of glucose and methionine to affect short-circuit current is lost by day 4. 5. Short-circuit current, measured in the absence of methionine or glucose, increases between day 1 and 2 of post-natal life. This increased electrogenicity is maintained for up to at least 10 days after birth. 6. The pig proximal colon has many of the properties of a small intestine at birth. It actively transports methionine and the presence of methionine stimulates the absorption of Na+. These effects could be physiologically important in the pig, where the normal absorptive function of the intestine is temporarily inhibited at birth by the intestinal transmission of immune globulins.  相似文献

Optical powers used in optical telecommunications networks have increased over time with the advent of technologies such as erbium-doped fibre amplifiers, dense WDM, and fibre Raman amplifiers. Erbium fibre and Raman amplifiers with output powers up to 1 W and 2 W respectively are now available for deployment giving optical power densities of ≈ 14 000 MW/m2 per Watt launched into a single mode fibre. This compares with 74 MW/m2 for the surface of the sun. It is thus essential to ensure that the risk of optical damage to the fibre is understood and steps are taken to mitigate it where necessary. Research carried out by BT over the last few years has shown that fibres carrying relatively modest optical powers, as low as 200 mW for the most sensitive fibres, can be catastrophically damaged at tight fibre bends. Damage is caused by some of the optical power lost at the bend being absorbed by the fibre coating that may over time lead to a sudden increase in temperature to over 700 °C causing either the silica to kink mimicking a fibre break, or the coating to burn off at the bend leading to fibre failure on subsequent handling. This paper describes factors that increase the risk of short-term catastrophic damage at fibre bends, presents experimental results to show the variation in sensitivity between different fibres, and discusses new important theoretical results modelling the temperature rise in the fibre.  相似文献

Hafnium aluminate (HfAlO) high-k films deposited by Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) with various Al concentrations were investigated. The results of electrical measurements show the feasibility of adjusting the relative dielectric constant of the layers in a wide range (9–16), when the aluminium concentration varies between 4% and 38%. The minimum leakage current occurs for Al concentrations up to 9%. The thinner films show Poole–Frenkel-like conduction at low field and Fowler–Nordheim-like conduction at moderate/high field, even at higher concentrations of Al into the film, while thicker films show a higher hysteresis due to an increased number of slow trapping centres in the film.  相似文献
