Digital ischemia and gangrene due to red blood cell aggregation induced by acquired dysfibrinogenemia

Digital gangrene was observed in a patient who had angiographic findings of digital arterial occlusion. The patient's blood showed a marked red blood cell aggregation with rouleaux formation in long chains, which could not be dispersed at shear rates up to 200 sec-1. Studies of the patient's blood revealed the presence of an abnormal fibrinogen capable of aggregating normal red blood cells. This fibrinogen was found by Raman spectroscopy to have an increased alpha-helical content, whereas the beta-sheet content was decreased. Defibrinogenation therapy with ancrod resulted in a dramatic symptomatic relief. The disappearance of the abnormal fibrinogen 6 months later and an absence of a family history indicate that this dysfibrinogenemia was acquired.     

A Comparison of the Performance and Stability of ZnO-TFTs With Silicon Dioxide and Nitride as Gate Insulators

The performance and stability of thin-film transistors with zinc oxide as the channel layer are investigated using gate bias stress. It is found that the effective channel mobility, ON/OFF ratio, and subthreshold slope of the devices that incorporate SiN are superior to those with SiO₂ as the dielectric. The application of positive and negative stress results in the device transfer characteristics shifting in positive and negative directions, respectively. The devices also demonstrate a logarithmic time-dependent threshold voltage shift suggestive of charge trapping within the band gap and the band tails responsible for the deterioration of device parameters. It is postulated that this device instability is partly a consequence of the lattice mismatch at the channel/insulator interface. All stressed devices recover to near-original characteristics after a short period at room temperature without the need for any thermal or bias annealing.     

Endovascular stenting of an unprotected left main coronary artery stenosis in a heart transplant patient

Endoluminal revascularizaion of left main coronary artery vessels is considered to be relatively contraindicated because of a high procedural mortality and restenosis rate. This report describes the first successful case of endovascular stenting in an unprotected left main coronary artery stenosis in a heart transplant patient.     

Monocrotaline pyrrole induces apoptosis in pulmonary artery endothelial cells

Eosinophilic myocarditis followed by fibrosis of the cardiac muscle was observed in addition to peripheral blood eosinophilia in CBA/J mice infected with Toxocara canis. The infected mice were used as an experimental model of eosinophilic endomyocarditis associated with hypereosinophilic syndrome. Effects of in vivo treatment with MoAbs to adhesion molecules on eosinophilic myocarditis were examined using this experimental model. Expressions of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) on endothelial cells of capillaries in myocardium were increased 1 and 2 weeks after infection. Infiltration of very late antigen (VLA)-4+ and/or CD11a+ cells into the cardiac muscles was also observed 1 and 2 weeks after infection. Infiltration of eosinophils into the heart was significantly suppressed by anti-CD18 MoAb and anti-VLA-4 MoAb, and focal fibrosis of the cardiac muscle was also significantly suppressed by combined administration of anti-CD18 and anti-ICAM-1 MoAbs. These results indicate that adhesion molecules may play important roles in eosinophilic myocarditis, and that blockade of interaction between adhesion molecules and their ligands may help to control it.
