The trachea has a complex anatomy to fulfill its tasks. Its unique fibro-cartilaginous structure maintains an open conduit during respiration, and provides vertical elasticity for deglutition, mobility of the neck and speech. Blood vessels pierce the intercartilaginous ligaments to perfuse the ciliated epithelium, which ensures effective mucociliary clearance. Removal of a tracheal segment affected by benign or malignant disease requires airtight restoration of the continuity of the tube. When direct approximation of both tracheal ends is no longer feasible, a reconstruction is needed. This may occur in recurrent short-segment defects in a scarred environment, or in defects comprising more than half the length of the trachea. The resulting gap must be filled with vascularized tissue that restores the mucosal lining and supports the semi-rigid, semi-flexible framework of the trachea. For long-segment or circular defects, restoration of this unique biomechanical profile becomes even more important. Due to the inherent difficulty of creating such a tube, a tracheostomy or palliative stenting are often preferred over permanent reconstruction. To significantly improve and sustain quality of life of these patients, surgeons proposed innovative strategies for complex tracheal repair. In this review, we provide an overview of current clinical applications of tracheal repair using autologous and allogenic tissues. We look at recent advances in the field of tissue engineering, and the areas for improvement of these first human applications. Lastly, we highlight the focus of our research, in an effort to contribute to the development of optimized tracheal reconstructive techniques.  相似文献

Theoretical pelagic primary production of phytoplankton and benthic primary production of periphyton were modelled for two small lakes in Estonia (Northeast Europe). Although located only 500 m apart, the water colour and light attenuation of these two lakes differed markedly. The Secchi depth (SD) in the clear‐water lake was 4.5 m and only 0.47 m in the dark‐water lake. The total phosphorus (TP) concentrations were, respectively, 15 μg/l and 28 μg/l. An empirical model whose inputs were morphometric, light conditions and dissolved organic carbon parameters obtained from in situ measurements was employed for the present study. The model calculated primary production with a time‐step of 10 min, and a spatial resolution of 10 cm, from sunrise to sunset and from lake surface to lake bottom. The primary production of periphyton and phytoplankton was almost equal in the clear lake, whereas only phytoplankton contributed to whole‐lake primary production in the dark lake because of the stronger light attenuation in the water column. The results of the present study indicated the depth‐distribution profiles differed dramatically between the two lakes. The clear lake had a deep, U‐shaped curve, with the productive layer reaching considerable depth soon after sunrise and maintaining a similar profile throughout the light hours. In contrast, the dark lake production declined rapidly with increasing depth, whereas the profile changed over the day reaching the greatest depth at noon.  相似文献

Benzoxazolinone detoxification is similar in plants grown under sulfur deficiency conditions and in control plants grown with an optimal S supply. However, when S-deficient plants were treated with metolachlor before benzoxazolin-2(3H)-one (BOA) incubation, detoxification was reduced, as indicated by a lower accumulation of the detoxification products BOA-6-O-glucoside and glucoside carbamate and by a loss of BOA-6-OH glucosyltransfease activity. Root colonizing microorganisms and the endophytic fungus Fusarium verticillioides participated in benzoxazolinone detoxification by converting the compound to 2-acetamidophenol (AAP) or O-hydroxyphenyl malonamic acid (OHPMA), a process accompanied by the appearance of phenoxazinone. Maize roots, however, absorbed AAP and OHPMA only in traces. Absorbed traces of OHPMA stimulated maize radicle growth, and traces of AAP stimulated cress. Phenoxazinone inhibited the growth of cress radicles at concentrations higher than 500 μM, whereas maize radicles were hardly affected. F. verticillioides did not convert benzoxazolinone to any known microbial degradation product when the medium of maize seedlings was inoculated with the fungus under sterile condition. Plant–fungus interactions seem to be important in plant survival of allelopathic attacks. This study points to a complicated network of allelopathic interactions that are influenced by biotic and abiotic factors, including herbicides.  相似文献

Freshly harvested Bambara groundnut (BGN) is occasionally consumed raw and can potentially become infected with mycotoxingenic field fungi. In this study, BGN samples were obtained from 12 farms in three districts of Mpumalanga in South Africa. Eight pooled samples were screened for multi-mycotoxin contamination using Ultra Performance Liquid-Chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). To identify mycoflora, 12 samples were screened using conventional and molecular methods. Selected potential mycotoxin producing isolates were screened for mycotoxins using UPLC-MS/MS. No mycotoxins were detected on the freshly harvested BGN samples, but they were infected with various mycotoxin producing fungal species namely Aspergillus flavus (50%), Penicillium citrinum (25%), Penicillium oxalicum (17%), Penicillium citreoviridin (0.8%), and Fusarium verticillioides (0.8%). Following screening of selected fungal cultures, aflatoxin B1 (0.4, 0.45 and 0.4 ppm) and fumonisin B1 (0.7 ppm) were detected from A. flavus and F. verticillioides, respectively. Identification of mycotoxigenic fungi on freshly harvested BGN presents a potential health risk.  相似文献

Our understanding of HDL metabolism would be enhanced by the measurement of the kinetics of preβHDL, the nascent form of HDL, since elevated levels have been reported in patients with coronary artery disease. Stable isotope methodology is an established technique that has enabled the determination of the kinetics (production and catabolism) of total HDL apoA-I in vivo. The development of separation procedures to obtain a preβHDL fraction, the isotopic enrichment of which could then be measured, would enable further understanding of the pathways in vivo for determining the fate of preβHDL and the formation of αHDL. A method was developed and optimised to separate and measure preβHDL and αHDL apoA-I enrichment. Agarose gel electrophoresis was first used to separate lipoprotein subclasses, and then a 4–10 % discontinuous SDS-PAGE used to isolate apoA-I. Measures of preβHDL enrichment in six healthy subjects were undertaken following an infusion of l-[1-13C-leucine]. After isolation of preβ and αHDL, the isotopic enrichment of apoA-I for each fraction was measured by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. PreβHDL apoA-I enrichment was measured with a CV of 0.51 % and αHDL apoA-I with a CV of 0.34 %. The fractional catabolic rate (FCR) of preβHDL apoA-I was significantly higher than the FCR of αHDL apoA-I (p < 0.005). This methodology can be used to selectively isolate preβ and αHDL apoA-I for the measurement of apoA-I isotopic enrichment for kinetics studies of HDL subclass metabolism in a research setting.  相似文献

Abstract

We test the hypothesis that the combination of kiln drying of double-stacked boards and contact heat treatment will reduce the susceptibility of treated boards to colonization by mold fungi. Winter-felled Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) sapwood boards were double-stacked in an industrial kiln in ‘‘sapwood out’’ and ‘‘sapwood in’’ positions. Dried samples were then contact heat-treated using a hot press at three different temperatures (140°C, 170°C, and 200°C) for three different periods (1, 3, and 10 min). An accelerated mold test was performed in a climate chamber where naturally mold-infected samples were used as a source of mold inocula. Contact heat treatment degraded the saccharides that accumulated at dried surfaces, and reduced the mold growth. The threshold temperature and time for inhibiting mold growth were 170°C for 10 min. However, for industrial application, the most feasible combination of temperature and time would be 200°C for 3 min. We concluded that double stacking/contact heat treatment used is an environmentally friendly alternative to chemicals for reducing mold on Scots pine sapwood boards.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of odors on appraisal processes and consequent emotional responses. The main goal was to test whether an odor is detected as novel or familiar before it is evaluated as pleasant or unpleasant. Participants performed a recognition task in which they were presented with pairs of unpleasant or pleasant odors (sample and target odors). Within a pair, the sample and target were either identical or different to assess participants’ novelty detection; unpleasant and pleasant target odors were contrasted to examine participants’ appraisal of intrinsic pleasantness. We measured facial expressions using electromyography and physiological reactions using electrocardiogram and electrodermal activity in response to odors. The earliest effects on facial muscles and heart rate occurred in response to novelty detection. Later effects on facial muscles and heart rate were related to pleasantness evaluation. Chinese planners have recently changed the policy towards historic cities and sites. After the Communist victory in 1949 the housing problem was emphasized, especially during the first period under Soviet influence and during the Cultural Revolution. Historic buildings, characteristic clay-and-straw houses and other memorials of the imperial and colonial past seemed elements to be eliminated from modern society. However, after the fall of the Gang of Four in 1976, the history of the people became an important issue. This article, based on a recent study tour to PR China, offers a personal view of the development of the conservation movement in China.  相似文献

Analysis of Edible Oils with Special Consideration of Oils Containing Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids 32 different edible oils including several oils containing unsaturated fatty acids were controlled with reference to quality and oxidation state by determination of acid content, saponification value, peroxide value, thiobarbituric acid value, volatile substances and smoke point before and after heating. Except for the fact that heating always causes a reduction of quality of oils, native olive oils and sunflower oils proved to be very susceptible for oxidation whereas refined “table” oils and corn oils showed higher stability.  相似文献
