BOA Detoxification of Four Summer Weeds during Germination and Seedling Growth

A recent greenhouse study revealed a significant reduction of germination and growth of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) and common purslane (Portulaca oleracea) by rye mulch, whereas velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) and common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) were not suppressed. Since BOA detoxification by metabolic alteration may influence the relation between the benzoxazinoid content of the soil mulch and weed suppression, we tested the dynamics in BOA detoxification in different plant organs of three and 10-day-old seedlings of four warm season weeds incubated with five BOA concentrations (4, 20, 40, 80, and 200 μmol g(-1) fresh weight). In addition, germination and length of 3-day-old seedlings were measured after exposure to 0, 0.3, 1.5, 3, 6, and 15 μmol BOA. Finally, we tested the influence of the MDR translocator inhibitors verapamil, nifedipine, and the GST inhibitor ethycrynic acid on BOA accumulation and detoxification activity. Due to BOA-detoxification, all weeds were able to grow in environments with low BOA contents. At higher contents, Abutilon theophrasti and Chenopodium album had a better chance to survive because of highly active mechanisms that avoided the uptake of BOA (A. theophrasti) and of efficient detoxification activities in youngest seedlings (C. album). The interpretation of all of the data gave the following sequence of increasing sensitivity: A. theophrasti < C. album < P. oleracea ≤ A. retroflexus. The results were in agreement with recent findings of the suppression of these weeds by rye mulches and their benzoxazinoid contents. Our studies demonstrate for the first time that the detoxification of BOA influences the survival of certain weeds in environments enriched with this allelochemical. Therefore, detoxification processes affect the potential for weed suppression by soil allelochemicals in sustainable weed management.     

Thermochromic VO2 film deposited on Al with tunable thermal emissivity for space applications

Thermochromic VO₂ thin films were deposited on various substrates, namely quartz, Si, and Al, using RF reactive magnetron sputtering deposition. IR thermometry measurements reveal that the emissivity properties of the system VO₂/substrate strongly depend on the IR optical properties of the substrate. VO₂ films deposited on a highly IR reflective substrate such as Al, present an emissivity dependence on temperature that is opposite to that of VO₂ deposited on an IR transparent substrate, like quartz and Si. XPS and Raman measurements show that VO₂ undergoes a crystalline structure transition from monoclinic to tetragonal when deposited on Al, quartz, and Si. They also confirm that the transition is accompanied by a change from an insulator or semiconductor state to a metallic state. The emissivity performance of VO₂/Al as compared to that of VO₂/quartz and VO₂/Si is attributed to the higher IR reflective properties of Al in comparison to quartz and Si. The increase of emissivity with temperature makes the VO₂/Al system of strong interest as a passive smart radiator device for thermal control of spacecraft.     

TSP Heuristics: Domination Analysis and Complexity

We show that the 2-Opt and 3-Opt heuristics for the traveling salesman problem (TSP) on the complete graph Kn produce a solution no worse than the average cost of a tour in Kn in a polynomial number of iterations. As a consequence, we get that the domination numbers of the 2- Opt , 3- Opt , Carlier—Villon, Shortest Path Ejection Chain, and Lin—Kernighan heuristics are all at least (n-2)! / 2 . The domination number of the Christofides heuristic is shown to be no more than $\lceil{n}/{2}\rceil !$ , and for the Double Tree heuristic and a variation of the Christofides heuristic the domination numbers are shown to be one (even if the edge costs satisfy the triangle inequality). Further, unless P = NP, no polynomial time approximation algorithm exists for the TSP on the complete digraph $\vec{K}_n$ with domination number at least (n-1)!-k for any constant k or with domination number at least (n-1)! - (( k /(k+1))(n+r))!-1 for any non-negative constants r and k such that (n+r) $\equiv$ 0 mod (k+1). The complexities of finding the median value of costs of all the tours in $\vec{K}_n$ and of similar problems are also studied.     

Geowissenschaften im Jahr danach ...

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser, mit dem Heft 1/2003 verabschiede ich mich von Ihnen nach vierj?hriger T?tigkeit als Editorin für die Fachbeitr?ge. Mein Kollege Martin Sauter von der Universit?t G?ttingen wird das Amt und damit die Aufgabe übernehmen, Ihnen gemeinsam mit dem Redaktionsteam viertelj?hrlich eine fachlich interessante, aktuelle Zeitschrift abzuliefern. Ich wünsche ihm dabei viel Erfolg, vor allem, dass der positive Trend in der Entwicklung von Qualit?t und Quantit?t der Artikel sowie die Zunahme fachlich kompetenter Beitr?ge aus der hydrogeologischen Praxis anh?lt. Ich selbst gehe zwar aus dieser wichtigen Schnittstelle zwischen Universit?t und Praxis unseres geowissenschaftlichen Fachgebietes heraus, m?chte mich aber weiterhin wesentlichen Aufgaben im Dienst der Hydrogeologie widmen. So wurde ich als Vertreterin des Fachgebietes in zwei Senatskommissionen der DFG berufen, in die Wasserkommission und die Geokommission. Gerade am vergangenen Wochenende fand in Heidelberg eine au?erordentliche Sitzung der Geokommission unter der Leitung von Volker Moosbrugger (Pal?ontologie, Universit?t Tübingen) statt, in der wir die Ziele dieses hochrangigen Gremiums definiert haben. Was ist die Geokommission und was sind ihre Aufgaben? In der Geokommission sind die wichtigsten Fachgebiete der Geowissenschaften von der Geophysik über Mineralogie, Geologie, Pal?ontologie bis hin zur Geographie vertreten. Die 20 Geokommissare, zumeist Hochschullehrer, sollen zu einer F?rderung der Geowissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft in Deutschland beitragen. Sie formulieren Perspektiven Geowissenschaftlicher Forschung, geben Empfehlungen zu strukturellen Verbesserungen in den Geowissenschaften, widmen sich der Problematik des Nachwuchses und der Ausbildung sie machen Geo-Politik im Sinne der gesamten Geo-Community. Wie Sie wissen sind die Geowissenschaften an den Universit?ten in viele Disziplinen mit einer spezifischen Disziplin-Kultur zersplittert, die sich untereinander oft als Konkurrenten um die vorhandenen knappen Forschungsmittel und den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs betrachten. Ein bestehender “Fachlobbyismus” ist auf dieser unteren Fachgruppenebene zu finden, was die relative Schw?che der geowissenschaftlichen Lobby erkl?rt. Daher gibt es die Geowissenschaften in Deutschland in der Realit?t immer noch nicht, was auch die schlechte gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz des Faches erkl?rt. Immerhin haben sich jetzt die meisten geowissenschaftlichen Gesellschaften dem Dach der Alfred Wegener Stiftung angeschlossen. Das vergangene Jahr der Geowissenschaften hat eine breitere ?ffentlichkeit durch zahlreiche Events über die Geowissenschaften und ihre Bedeutung für die Gesellschaft informiert. Die meisten der vielen Aktivit?ten wurden in ihrem Erfolg sehr positiv bewertet – es ist nunmehr wichtig, die Kommunikation mit der breiten Bev?lkerung nicht abrei?en zu lassen und deutlich zu machen, dass Geowissenschaftler wichtige Beitr?ge in der modernen Gesellschaft leisten, sind doch gesellschaftsrelevante Themen wie Klima, Energie, Trinkwasser direkt aus dem Themenkreis Feuer – Wasser – Erde – Luft entnommen. Speziell in unserem Fachgebiet hat in den vergangenen Jahren eine Verbesserung der Struktur an den Hochschulen und Anerkennung durch die geowissenschaftlichen Nachbardisziplinen stattgefunden, die vermutlich auf die zunehmende Bedeutung für den Arbeitsmarkt zurückgeführt werden kann. Die Bedeutung der geowissenschaftlich ausgebildeten Kandidaten auf dem Arbeitsmarkt ist aber insgesamt weiterhin rückl?ufig. Diese Entwicklung ist nicht umkehrbar, da viele ehemalige Arbeitsbereiche an Bedeutung verloren haben. Wir brauchen daher eine noch h?here Flexibilit?t unserer Absolventen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt, d. h. die Ausbildung muss st?rker auf Schlüsselqualifikationen ausgerichtet sein. Die Verbesserung der Struktur in der Ausbildung durch Bachelor und Masterstudieng?nge der Geowissenschaften ist erforderlich, um auf dem internationalen Arbeitsmarkt zu bestehen und andere Nachteile (wie beispielsweise h?heres Eingangsalter) aufzuheben. Zurück zu unserer Zeitschrift Grundwasser und diesem Heft, dessen Zusammenstellung mich etwas wehmütig gestimmt hat. In diesem Heft finden Sie einen Schwerpunkt im Bereich der Sanierung organischer Verunreinigungen und ihrer Kontrolle im Grundwasser. Die drei Manuskripte von Mohrlok et al., Kraft & Grathwohl und Küster et al. schlagen eine Brücke zwischen Forschung und Praxis und liegen damit sehr gut im Trend unserer Zeitschrift. Der Artikel von Bender stammt direkt aus der Praxis. Der Autor stellt in diesem Beitrag ein hydraulisches Modell für das Wasserwerk Rheinau vor. Meinem Herzenswunsch zufolge gibt es direkt am Anfang einen übersichtsartikel zum Thema Arsen in der Hydrosph?re von Andreas Tretner, der seine Dissertation zum Redoxverhalten von Arsen in meiner Arbeitsgruppe in Heidelberg durchgeführt hat. Ich wünsche Ihnen bei der Lektüre dieses Heftes wie auch aller weiteren Grundwasser-Hefte viel Vergnügen!     

Standardization of APPIC predoctoral psychology internship application forms.

Internship application forms sent by officials from 81 Association of Professional Psychology Internship Centers (APPIC) predoctoral internship sites accredited by the American Psychological Association were examined to identify common items for the purpose of developing a single standardized questionnaire. Questions found on at least 20% of 50 application forms composed a master list against which items on the remaining 31 validation applications were compared. The final revision of the standardized questionnaire includes three additional items from the validation sample and changes suggested by 72 APPIC internship directors of training. The proposed standardized application form has 47 major questions and eight requirements; it could be made available through computer technology, duplicated, and mailed electronically by applicants. Stability of maternally reported temperament from infancy to 8 years.

Explores the stability of temperament, measured by maternal report, from infancy to 8 yrs in a longitudinal sample of 450 children. Prior questionnaire-based, factor-analytic studies of stability have usually assumed that temperament dimensions show continuity during development and that, where the same temperament factors emerge at multiple measurement occasions, the factors show measurement equivalence. Structural equation modeling was used to test these assumptions. Approach, Irritability, Cooperation-Manageability, Inflexibility, Rhythmicity, and Persistence factors showed substantial continuity from infancy to 8 yrs. Approach and Rhythmicity showed the highest stability over the full age range, whereas Inflexibility showed the highest absolute level of stability. Entwicklung einer Dekompositionsstrategie für die Strukturoptimierung komplexer Bauteile

Zusammenfassung Der Einsatz von Finite-Elemente-Optimierungsprogrammen für die konstruktive Auslegung von Bauteilen ist mit gro?em Rechenaufwand und Speicherplatzbedarf verbunden. Die Dekompositionsstrategie stellt ein effizientes Verfahren dar, das zu einer drastischen Reduzierung der Rechenzeiten bei der L?sung von Problemen der Gewichtsminimierung führt. Darüber hinaus verringert sich der immens hohe Bedarf an Plattenplatz und nicht zuletzt wird ein schnelleres Konvergenzverhalten bei der Optimierung erreicht. Die in diesem Beitrag vorgestellten Arbeiten sind Gegenstand des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) gef?rderten Forschungsprojektes “Entwicklung von Dekompositionsstrategien für die Strukturoptimierung unter Einsatz von Parallelrechnern?     

Using CAS to solve a mathematics task: A deconstruction

I investigate how and whether a heterogeneous group of first-year university mathematics students in South Africa harness the potential power of a computer algebra system (CAS) when doing a specific mathematics task. In order to do this, I develop a framework for deconstructing a mathematics task requiring the use of CAS, into its primary components. This framework is based on the semiotic notion of diagrammatic reasoning whereby reasoning consists of construction of signs, transformation of signs, and observation and interpretation of signs. I use the framework to distinguish between the activities of students who were computer literate on entry to university and those who were not computer literate. The analysis suggests that formerly non-computer literate students are no worse than computer literate students in using CAS to construct various representations of signs, but that they are less able to interpret these signs. I propose that, in the South African context, this is largely due to inequities in prior mathematical education, rather than a lack of computer literacy per se.     

Untersuchung von Cyaniden im Grundwasser des Testfeldes Süd

Cyanide contents in groundwater samples of a former manufactured gas plant site, the so-called Testfeld Süd, have been studied for a period of about 1 1/2 year. Non-toxic and highly toxic cyanide species were distinguished by quantifying operational parameters called strong acid dissociable (SAD) and weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide according to German standard method DIN 38 405 D14. SAD values reached up to 4.5 mg/l, WAD values up to 34 μg/l. Calculating the species distribution with help of PHREEQC ( Parkhurst &; Appelo 2001), applying site specific geochemical parameters, led to the assumption that a measurement artefact may cause underestimation of the toxic species. The spatial and temporal trend of cyanide values indicated that cyanide is retarded in the observed aquifer. Regarding the geochemical environment and composition of the aquifer material precipitation and adsorption are most likely to be the regarding processes.     

Rotational motions of macro-molecules by single-molecule fluorescence microscopy

Several complementary techniques have been developed to determine average orientation, dynamics on multiple time scales, and concerted rotational motions of individual fluorescent probes bound to biological macromolecules. In both protein domains and nucleic acids, tilting and wobble are relevant to their functional mechanisms. Here we briefly review methods to detect angles and rotational motions of single fluorophores and give an example of three-dimensional, total internal reflection, single-molecule fluorescence polarization applied to actin as it is translocated by conventional muscle myosin.
