In this paper we present a collection of fluid–structure interaction (FSI) computational techniques that enable realistic simulation of pulsatile Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs). The simulations involve dynamic interaction of air, blood, and a thin membrane separating the two fluids. The computational challenges addressed in this work include large, buckling motions of the membrane, the need for periodic remeshing of the fluid mechanics domain, and the necessity to employ tightly coupled FSI solution strategies due to the very strong added mass effect present in the problem. FSI simulation of a pulsatile VAD at realistic operating conditions is presented for the first time. The FSI methods prove to be robust, and may be employed in the assessment of current, and the development of future, pulsatile VAD designs.  相似文献

In cardiovascular blood flow simulations a large portion of computational resources is dedicated to solve the linear system of equations. Boundary conditions in these applications are critical for obtaining accurate and physiologically realistic solutions, and pose numerical challenges due to the coupling between flow and pressure. Using an implicit time integration setting can lead to an ill-conditioned tangent matrix that causes deterioration in performance of traditional iterative linear equation solvers (LS). In this paper we present a novel and efficient preconditioner (PC) for this class of problems that exploits the strong coupling between the flow and pressure. We implement this PC in a LS algorithm designed for solving systems of equations governing incompressible flows. Excellent efficiency and stability properties of the proposed method are illustrated on a set of clinically relevant hemodynamics simulations.  相似文献

Effectiveness of spray application of potable water wash (WW), 25% (w/v) sodium chloride (NaCl), and 0.1% (v/v) acidified sodium chlorite (ASC) was evaluated against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Staphylococcus aureus inoculated onto beef briskets. The purpose was to identify antimicrobial treatments which may be applied to beef carcasses and more specifically in kosher meat facilities. Treatments were applied for 10-60 s at pressure of 419 kPa. Water wash, NaCl, and ASC significantly reduced E. coli O157:H7 as compared with the control, although, only ASC resulted in improved removal with increased exposure time. Water wash did not significantly reduce S. aureus counts throughout exposure and NaCl was only effective after 60 s of exposure, while ASC reduced counts throughout exposure. E. coli O157:H7 was twice as sensitive to WW and NaCl as S. aureus in terms of percent reduction in cell count.  相似文献

Sliced (cut) and exterior (intact) surfaces of restructured cooked roast beef were inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes, treated with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC; immersion in 500 ml of 1% solution for 1 min), individually vacuum packaged, and stored for 42 days at 0 or 4 degrees C. Noninoculated samples were similarly treated, packaged, and stored to determine effects on quality (color and firmness) and on naturally occurring bacterial populations, including aerobic plate counts and lactic acid bacteria. Immediately after CPC treatment, regardless of inoculation level, L. monocytogenes populations were reduced (P = 0.05) by about 2 log CFU/cm2 on sliced surfaces and by about 4 log CFU/cm2 on exterior surfaces. Throughout 42 days of refrigerated storage (at both 0 and 4 degrees C), L. monocytogenes populations on CPC-treated samples remained lower (P = 0.05) than those of nontreated samples for both surface types. After 42 days of storage at both 0 and 4 degrees C, aerobic plate count and lactic acid bacteria populations of treated samples were 1 to 1.5 log CFU/cm2 lower (P = 0.05) than those of nontreated samples for both surface types. CPC treatment resulted in negligible effects (P > 0.05) on the color (L*, a*, and b* values) of exterior and sliced roast beef surfaces during storage. For both sliced and exterior surfaces, CPC-treated samples were generally less firm than nontreated samples. CPC treatment effectively reduced L. monocytogenes populations on roast beef surfaces and resulted in relatively minor impacts on color and texture attributes. CPC treatment, especially when applied to products prior to slicing, may serve as an effective antimicrobial intervention for ready-to-eat meat products.  相似文献

Coronary stent design influences local patterns of wall shear stress (WSS) that are associated with neointimal growth, restenosis, and the endothelialization of stent struts. The number of circumferentially repeating crowns N(C) for a given stent design is often modified depending on the target vessel caliber, but the hemodynamic implications of altering N(C) have not previously been studied. In this investigation, we analyzed the relationship between vessel diameter and the hemodynamically optimal N(C) using a derivative-free optimization algorithm coupled with computational fluid dynamics. The algorithm computed the optimal vessel diameter, defined as minimizing the area of stent-induced low WSS, for various configurations (i.e., N(C)) of a generic slotted-tube design and designs that resemble commercially available stents. Stents were modeled in idealized coronary arteries with a vessel diameter that was allowed to vary between 2 and 5 mm. The results indicate that the optimal vessel diameter increases for stent configurations with greater N(C), and the designs of current commercial stents incorporate a greater N(C) than hemodynamically optimal stent designs. This finding suggests that reducing the N(C) of current stents may improve the hemodynamic environment within stented arteries and reduce the likelihood of excessive neointimal growth and thrombus formation.  相似文献

Italian-style salami batter (formulated with pork shoulder) was inoculated with ca. 7.0 log CFU/g of either Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes. Salami links (55-mm cellulose casings) were fermented at 30 degrees C for 24, 40, or 72 h and then dried to target moisture/protein ratios (MPRs) of 1.9:1 or 1.4:1. Links were sampled after fermentation (24, 40, and 72 h) and after combined fermentation-drying treatments (MPRs of 1.9:1 and 1.4:1 for all fermentation periods), and microbiological and proximate analyses were performed at each sampling. Pathogen populations were enumerated by direct plating on selective agar and by an injured-cell recovery method. When enumerated by the injured-cell recovery method, Salmonella populations were reduced by 1.2 to 2.1 log CFU/g after fermentation alone (24 to 72 h) and by 2.4 to 3.4 log CFU/g when fermentation was followed by drying. Drying to an MPR of 1.4:1 was no more effective than drying to an MPR of 1.9:1 (P > 0.05). When enumerated directly on selective media, Salmonella populations were reduced from 1.6 to 2.4 log CFU/g and from 3.6 to 4.5 log CFU/g for fermentation alone and fermentation followed by drying, respectively. L. monocytogenes populations were reduced by <1.0 log CFU/g following all fermentation and combined fermentation-drying treatments, regardless of the enumeration method. These results suggest that the Italian-style salami manufacturing process evaluated does not adequately reduce high pathogen loads. Processors may thus need to consider supplemental measures, such as raw material specifications and a final heating step, to enhance the lethality of the overall manufacturing process.  相似文献
